GAME NOTES: The Las Vegas Invitational continues tonight as the Rhode Island
Rams of the Atlantic 10 take on the Miami Hurricanes of the Big East. Rhode
Island got off to a solid start with an 89-77 victory over Northeastern, but
the squad followed that win with a disappointing 74-68 setback to Lubbock
Christian on Sunday. The Rams are certainly not proud of the fact that they
are the first Division I team ever to lose to Lubbock Christian. Jim Baron did
a tremendous job last season for URI, as the head coach helped his squad tie
for second in the East Division of the Atlantic 10 and earn a spot in the NIT.
As for Miami, it has won its first two games of this tournament. After
crushing the same Lubbock Christian team that beat Rhode Island, the
Hurricanes posted a 78-60 decision over UL-Monroe on Sunday. Since the 1998-99
season, the team has a record of 50-32 in Big East Conference games, tying it
for the third most wins in the talent-packed league. Rhode Island is
attempting to win its first game against Miami in what will be the fifth all-
time meeting between the two teams.
Miami connected on only 42.6 percent of its field goal attempts against UL-
Monroe last time out, including a 3-of-12 effort from three-point range.
Fortunately, the team did plenty of other things well in the win. For
instance, the Hurricanes hit 17-of-19 free throws in the tilt and held a 40-29
rebounding advantage, including 16-6 on the offensive glass. Darius Rice led
the way as usual in the victory, as he scored 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting
from the floor and pulled down seven rebounds as well. William Frisby netted
12 points and Robert Hite pitched in 10 points in the win. Rice is clearly the
leader of the team, as he is considered one of the Big East's elite players.
In the opener against Lubbock Christian, he racked up 20 points and 12
rebounds.
Rhode Island shot only 36.4 percent from the floor in the first half against
Lubbock Christian and found itself down by 10 points at the half. Although the
Rams warmed up a bit after the break, poor defense prevented them from
recording a comeback victory. They enabled Lubbock Christian to make good on
53.7 percent of its field goal attempts in the tilt, including a 12-of-26
effort from three-point range. Rhode Island attempted 15 threes in the game,
but it got only two to drop. Perhaps the only positive that the Rams can draw
from the game from a statistical standpoint is that they held a 40-31
rebounding advantage, including an 18-7 edge on the offensive glass. Dawan
Robinson led the way in the victory with 26 points on 10-of-18 shooting from
the floor, and Brian Woodward chipped in 12 points despite 4-of-15 shooting.
Both Woodward and Robinson scored 16 points in the season-opening victory over
Northeastern.
Rice will be too much for Rhode Island to handle, as his versatility at the
offensive end creates major matchup problems for the opposition. Rhode Island
should enter this game with added motivation after the loss to Lubbock
Christian, but a win over the 'Canes is unlikely.
