What Will Cincy Do With #1 Pick?

What is everyone's opinion on what Cincinnati will do or should do with the #1 pick in the upcoming draft? Will they keep it and draft a QB of the future or go for an immediate impact player such as C. Rogers, T. Suggs or T. Newman? Or will some team make a trade with the Bengals for the right to the #1 pick? I would just like to hear what everyone's take on this issue.

:D

From what I have read,I don't think that they are in love that much with Palmer. Although I read that a cb was only taken once as the first pick since the draft was implemented, they may take Newman, the cb from Kansas St.

I agree that they are not totally sold on Palmer. Boomer Esiason has been a very vocal supporter of Palmer and believes that he has all the tools to be a good NFL QB. I would not be surprised at all to see them take Newman, but I think that T. Suggs and B. Leftwich's workouts could change things. Lewis might not be able to resist the temptation of having J. Smith on one side and T. Suggs on the other. That would make for a nice front line once you throw in J. Thornton, O. Gibson and T. Williams on the inside.

Charles Rogers still in the mix, though.

If Rogers is the WR from Mich. St., then I don't see them taking him. How many wr's do they need. I agree that it seems that they like Leftwich, but don't know if they would take him with the first pick.
I think over all they would like to trade down form the first pick for two reasons. One, they are a cheap organization & probably not crazy about having to pay for that pick, & the other reason is that they can additional picks & draft Letwich later on in the 1st round.Of course they have to find a suitable trading partner.

I don't think Rogers would be a bad pick to team up with Chad Johnson. They need a speed receiver and how many oppurtunities do you get to draft a guy who is likened to a cross between T. Owens and R. Moss?

I agree that Cincy wants to trade out of the top spot, but I don't think anyone is beating down their door to do that. The problem is that their is no clear cut #1 as in past years. I think it will come down to Palmer, Leftwich, Rogers and Newman. I think that T. Suggs poor workout yesterday may have taken him out of the picture.

roll the dice

WR Roger's is a cross of Owens and Moss -- a head case. Lewis may feel he can handle him, but remember, all defensive minded coaches draft DEFENSE, especially with what the Bucs did to the Raiders last year. I feel it will be DE Suggs, CB Newman, or trade down a couple of places and try to get either one or a DT. The Bengals should get one of the top 3 defensive players by the 7th pick.

If I have to go on a limb and Cin keeps the #1 pick, I'll go with CB Newman.

They feel Rogers has the talent of a R. Moss without the baggage. I would personally like to see them take either Newman or Rogers. I think that the Bengals may have considered using the pick on J. Kennedy before the addition of J. Thornton and C. Powell in FA. Suggs may have hurt his case for #1 with his workout, although I did here he would like to run a couple more 40's at a later date.

NFL Draft is April 26

Cinnicy is looking for a trade but no one wants the #1 pick. Spikes is a HUGE loss for them. You have to think a LB is in the mix but this is the bungles. They will make the worst choice. May G-d be with whoever they pick.

They already signed Hardy to replace Spikes, so I don't think they will look to focus on LB's.

As a Bengals fan, I hope they go for Leftwich.

Then there were four.

Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said this past week that, because the club has been unable to successfully trade the first overall draft pick, it is seriously considering four players in the No. 1 slot.

The players are quarterbacks Carson Palmer (USC ), Byron Leftwich (Marshall ), cornerback Terence Newman (Kansas State ) and wide receiver Charles Rogers (Michigan State ).

"Those are the top four guys," Lewis said.

Lewis also said the Bengals would try to make a collective decision on their top player and have at least two weeks to negotiate a contract in advance of the April 26 selection.

"It's something the organization has decided to do," Lewis said. "That's not earth-shaking news."

The strategy is common in the NFL. In recent years, the Houston Texans (David Carr ) and Cleveland Browns (Tim Couch ) have negotiated with the No. 1 overall pick before the draft.

The Bengals have twice had the first overall pick. In 1994, they took defensive tackle Dan Wilkinson from Ohio State , and a year later they traded the Nos. 5 and 36 overall picks to Carolina to get the rights to draft tailback Ki-Jana Carter . Neither deal was completed in advance.

Lewis said he has spent time already with the four players and plans to invite them to Cincinnati for pre-draft visits. The Bengals had a private workout Friday with Palmer, the former Southern California QB and Heisman Trophy winner. Palmer remains the favorite to go No. 1, but the Bengals want to make sure they see what Leftwich can do in his pro day workout on April 7.

"I don't think there will be that much drama," Lewis told reporters at the AFC coaches breakfast at the NFL meeting in Phoenix.

"We're committed to keeping it as long as the value of the pick is more than the value of what we could get for it. The phone is not exactly ringing off the hook (from other clubs). If we go to them, we won't get a very good deal."

If they trade with Houston, that would be a great move. This is not necessarily a reflection of M. Brown's thriftiness, but M. Lewis making the right moves. Why pay a huge bonus for the #1 pick when you can get one of the 4 players they have targeted at #3 and save a substantial amount in bonus money. That makes good business sense. If Houston does trade up for Rogers, then Detroit would probably take Newman. It will still be interesting to see what happens after Leftwich works out.

Bengals have a mini-camp this weekend and C. Palmer will be making his visit to Cincy this weekend. Looks more and more like the Bengals will be making Palmer the #1 pick in this draft, unless a trade is made before the draft. Lewis has said that the team will focus on the draft next week and look to begin negotiations with the player they will select at #1.

Palmer is the man... I think that he will have a great chance to develop into a good NFL QB with the changes that have been made to the Bengals coaching staff. He just needs to hold the clipboard for a season or two and not be thrown to the wolves.

Leftwich is an intelligent man and has as much football IQ as any player in the draft. Very well spoken and lives to play football...a true 'general' on the field. Congrats to whichever team drafts him.

I think that Leftwich will be a good NFL QB who has great football intelligence. I just hope that Jacksonville grabs him before he gets to Baltimore. As a Bengals fan, I would hate to have to face him twice a year.

Hoops, are you still getting an agent percentage on Byron's signing bonus?

Machine,

I can't discuss that on a public forum. I hope you understand.
