I would've been like every single other fan: looking up at the ball and not even realizing that Alou was jumping for it, and instinctively grabbed it.

I hope to God the Cubs lose tonight. After seeing how these fans are reacting to this guy in a game that they lost by FIVE RUNS, they don't deserve to have their team in the World Series.

Blame Prior for choking. Blame Baker for keeping Prior in too long. But don't blame some poor fan that did something almost everyone else would've done in the same position.

well said, imagine what the ball is worth now? although as hard as it is to say this, as a die-hard cardinal fan, i hope the cubs win, just so this poor guy doesn't have to live with this forever!

Don't think any other fans in the world would have reacted any differently than Cub fans did last night. If you don't think fans in Fenway, Yankee Stadium (or anywhere else for that matter), would have hazed that guy, you're delusional.

What is going on today is an absolute joke but that is the media's fault.

Seems the baseball purists on this board that have voted, certainly do not know their game:confused:
Why would one reach out if your cheering for the home team in that situation. You know ahead of time where your sitting, and most would garner the question of, "What happens if a foul ball comes this way?

Well here is some possible responses:
- Duh, I dont know? I guess I would just try to catch it, Duh-looie!-Homer Simpson

-I know fer er fact if our ballplaaayr can catch that caner corn, then I fer one, will get the hell outta the way, what aya stuped!-Sam the Salami :thefinger

-Oh dear, what if one of my finger nails were to get broken off and then I would have to go over to Nancy's nail palor again, and the way the charge for a cuticle push, and a reglue, with a polish and a reset, my word!!! But Poochie, you would pay for it, wouldn't ya!-Dolly

Looks like a true Cub Fan/ Bud Man would answer like Sam the Salami:cool:

I don't think anyone can say for sure how they would have reacted in that situation. I think the guy should have realized before the game started that given where his seats are any foul ball that he could catch the left fielder would be able to catch too. Definitely, though, if he had backed away it just would have been someone else lunging for it.

You also have to realize that there is no big screen replay at Wrigley, and typically with the little monitors they have in the seats they won't replay any real close plays (for fear of inciting a riot). To the fans there, judging by Alou's reaction the thought was that the fan had actually reached into the field of play and interfered. I can tell you from experience that if you're sitting past 3rd down the line you can't see anything in the corner, and if you're on the other side you don't have a good view depth perception-wise to judge where exactly the ball was. Today, from what I've heard on the radio, most fans realize that while that stupid play certainly didn't help the Cubs, there were still a number of other chances they had and didn't get it done.

Funny thing is, the exact same thing happened in Game 2, but with a pop-up by the Marlins dugout that Miller could have caught. Of course nobody remembers it because the Cubs won easily.
