Here's some info for you:

1. Russia holds a lock on natural gas supplies to Eastern Europe.
2. Qatar is the world's largest exporter of liquified natural gas. Qatar wants to build a pipeline to Europe through Syria to sell it's gas. Saudi Arabi can do this as well

Now, Russia and China are backing Assad - to keep Syria as it is and allow Russia to maintain its monopoly on the sale of natural gas to Europe and all the geo-political influence this brings.
Qatar and Saudi Arabia are willing to PAY US forces to remove Assad and bring in a new regime that would be more amendable to a pipeline going thru Syria.

Given this basic information as to the reasons for the conflict occurring in Syria, do you really think that Syria is planning to attack the US?

Would it make any sense to you that the rebels gassed their own people or were aided by Saudi agents to make it appear that Assad used chemical weapons?

Assad may be a brutal dictator but I really do not think he is stupid enough to try and pick a fight with the US
