I'll be moving back to SoCal likely in 6-12months. Personally, I prefer a little more south, anywhere along the coastline between LA and SD, like Corona Del Mar, Laguna, Dana Point. I suppose if I had to pick, Malibu would be my choice. But both are expensive as hell to stay at. Santa Monica is a lot closer to the city, though. Either way, better make sure you get yourself a six figure paying job, unless you just wanna rent a room from someone's house.

Yeah, if you plan on living in or near any of the major cities in California or 'name' places like Malibu, Sausalito, etc., then plan on having some major coinage.

In So Cal, Santa Monica is known as "The people's republic of Santa Monica." It isn't a bad place to live if you prefer socialism/communism. There is a nig patch of very seedy neighborhoods in and around Santa Monica. I think it was DDubs that had it right when he said L.A. to San Diego. Actually, anywhere from Huntingon Beach to Coronado is very nice. Corona Del Mar and Newport are great, but you need a mid 6 figure income to live anywhere nice there. From San Diego north there are spectacular places, many ultra expensive like La Jolla or Del Mar; others almost as nice but half the price like Encinitas, Leucadia, Solano Beach. Places like Carlsbad and Cardiff, closer to San Diego, alsop great. Oceanside is one to stay away from unless you like Marines. Be prepared to spend some money if you want to live on the water. Hard to find places on the sand in Orange County under a million. Just for example, I live on the water in Huntington Harbour (fancy folks name for Huntington Beach, but more of a marina). I have a one bedrom, loft, 1 1/2 bath condo. One a few houses away just sold for $425,000. It's a great life, like living in a resort everyday. If I had a choice, I'd probably move farther south to Laguna ot closer to Northern San Diego county.

GEEZ! I didnt think living in Cali would be THAT expensive. Iam not sure about me having a 6 figure job....better off trying a 10 team parlay for 100 bucks.

Is there anything nice in the northern part of California?

Looked up the prices of houses in...

Santa Monica
Malibu
Dana Point
Huntingon Beach
Encinitas

I must say....the cheapest house is like a mansion in Toledo.

In Malibu there was a 3 bedroom 2 bath and they want like AT LEAST 1 million dollars....holy fawk!

In Toledo for a million dollars you can buy like a 10 bedroom house with 5 bathrooms AND along the Maumee River...its not Pacific Ocean, but its riverfront :D

Props to you Californians who afford to live out there....I may have to re-consider

Us Ohians would have a hard on to wake up to this every morning.....

Right now its 20 degrees outside.....20 DEGREES! FAWK THIS WEATHER

A friend of mine is a realtor in Huntington Beach, Jody Clegg, just curious if you ever heard the name, I believe her husband is on the fire dept.. My mother lives in Rancho Santa Fe, one sister just moved to Point Loma, the other outside of SF to Tiberon, before that she was in Chula Vista she bought that house off Billy Casper, the golfer. She was actually married at the Dana Point Resort in '94. The Chula Vista area is pretty reasonable. Hellah you might want to check ouy a place near Old Town, plenty of nightlife, building a new stadium down there and you can cross the bridge into coronado and find yourself a sugar momma at the hotel del!!

Freelance is right. The little stretch which includes cities below Carlsbad, is probably the most affordable beach areas in California. Encinitas is a great little town. Solano Beach and Leucadia are also nice. They are sandwiched between Carlsbad and Del Mar. In most of these towns, if you don't mind living 1 mile or 2 from the water, the prices go down substantially and are basically affordable to anyone with a half way decent job. The weather is great here (Northern San Diego County) and you are close to San Diego and L.A. Once I retire, that is probably where I will be headed.

Raz - don't know the name, but have only lived in HB for 2 years.

Hellah - don't be too afraid to come out to the beach area. Start out by living a mile or 2 away. It is affordable and once you get settled, you can move up.

Have a good buddy of mine (married, 3 girls) living at Dana Point, renting a 3 bedroom place, 2 blocks from the beach. $1050 a month. Beautiful area.

The more south you go, the cheaper the rent is. But if you wanna own...........still need a DEEP pocket. Having a "beach view" means everything in real estate in SoCal.

Grew up in LA, lived in Newport Beach for 5 yrs before moving to the Midwest. All I can say is I CAN'T WAIT TO MOVE BACK!!
