Tough game tonight for the FIRST-PLACE Chicago White Sox. Three straight one-run wins for a team not used to playing in tight ball games.
Lilly's getting a chance tonight to show that he belongs as a starting pitcher in this rotation and will need a strong showing to not be sent back to the pen. The Sox should be able to get to him, but they've been streaky during their hitting stretch of the last month or so. They're not putting up runs in a lot of innings. When they do score, they score in bunches. Basically, the Sox will get to him for 6 runs or none.
Garland's performance in the last two months is one of the biggest reasons for the Sox turnaround. But he got pulled for Schoenweiss in his last outing and had to take a no-decision as the relief got shelled. He made a fuss and let Manuel know about his disappointment in the paper the next day. With an off-day followed by Buerhle's CG, Manuel has to get some work for his pen anyway, and I'm not sure how effective Garland can be looking over his shoulder.
Last night was a huge victory for the Sox, but the fact is that the A's own them. They need this game more than the Sox need it and they are the better team. Sox will be back in first by Sunday.
Go Sox!! (just not tonight)
