I guess I must have missed this..........sure is surprising to me.................

From Sunday's televised "Meet the Press" Senator Obama was asked about his stance on the American Flag. Obama Explains National Anthem Stance Sun, 07 Sept. 2008 11:48:04 EST, General Bill Ginn USAF (ret.) asked Obama to explain why he doesn't follow protocol when the National Anthem is played.

The General also stated to the Senator that according to the United States Code, Title 36, Chapter 10, Sec. 171... During rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed, all present except those in uniform are expected to stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. At the very least, "Stand and Face It".

Senator Obama Live on Sunday states:

"As I've said about the flag pin, I don't want to be perceived as taking sides, Obama said:

?There are a lot of people in the world to whom the American flag is a symbol of oppression. And the anthem itself conveys a war-like message.

You know, the bombs bursting in air and all. It should be swapped for something less parochial and less bellicose. I like the song 'I'd Like To Teach the World To Sing.' If that were our anthem, then I might salute it.

"We should consider to reinvent our National Anthem as well as to redesign our Flag to better offer our enemies hope and love. My wife disrespects the Flag for many personal reasons. Together she and I have attended several flag burning ceremonies in the past, many years ago. She has her views and I have mine".

National Anthem Stance

Claim: E-mail reproduces Barack Obama's statement about the U.S. national anthem.

Status: False.

Example: [Collected via e-mail, April 2008]

Obama Explains National Anthem Stance

Hot on the heels of his explanation for why he no longer wears a flag pin, presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama was forced to explain why he doesn't follow protocol when the National Anthem is played.

According to the United States Code, Title 36, Chapter 10, Sec. 171, During rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed, all present except those in uniform are expected to stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart.

'As I've said about the flag pin, I don't want to be perceived as taking sides,' Obama said. 'There are a lot of people in the world to whom the American flag is a symbol of oppression. And the anthem itself conveys a war-like message. You know, the bombs bursting in air and all. It should be swapped for something less parochial and less bellicose. I like the song 'I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing.' If that were our anthem, then I might salute it.'

WHAAAAAAAT!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, this could possibly be our next president. I, for once, am speechless . . .

Variations: Later versions of this item report Senator Obama's purported comment as something taken from a transcript of the 7 September 2008 broadcast of Meet the Press.

Origins: Back in October 2007, one of the hottest e-mail forwards was a picture capturing Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama standing in front of a U.S. flag

(at an Iowa political event) with his hands clasped in front of him during the playing of the U.S. national anthem (while other persons on the platform with him stood with their hands placed over their hearts). This photographic brouhaha soon mutated into a (false) claim that Barack Obama "refused to put his hand over his heart during the Pledge of Allegiance" and then into the (even more false) claim that "he refused to recite the Pledge of Allegiance" at all (rumors which the Obama campaign soon provided evidence to negate).

While this controversy was all the rage on the Internet, political columnist John Semmens included a bit at the end of one of his satirical "Semi-News" columns (found on the web site of The Arizona Conservative) offering a mock explanation from the Senator about his non-hand-over-heart stance, poking fun at Obama by having him voice the opinion that "the American flag is a symbol of oppression" and that the U.S. national anthem is too "bellicose" and should be replaced by something gentler like "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing."

This bit of satire evidently came off as too believable to some readers, as it has since been excerpted from Semmens' column and forwarded via e-mail (without attribution) as a genuine statement from Senator Obama. However topical it might be, it's just a bit of political commentary-cum-humor, though, not the Senator's own words.

In September 2008, this same piece began arriving in our inbox headed by the claim that it was derived from the 7 September 2008 airing of Meet the Press and naming the interviewer as "General Bill Ginn, USAF (ret.)" It goes without saying that Senator Obama wasn't among the guests on that day's show (those were Senator Joe Biden and author Tom Friedman).

Since I am the gullible one..........just explain it for all of us that are STUPID!!!

By the way I wouldnt vote for McCain or Obama.......I just think its kind of WEIRD that the possible next President would be standing there with his hands to his side during the national anthem...........

Do you teach your kids (or would you) to act like this????

Wow. I don't know how much proof you need. OK, so you do at least believe that the article was completely made up, right? I mean it's been proven wrong and completely invented.

As for the hand over heart thing, I think the rendition was so bad that he couldn't even recognize the song. It appears that he generally follows protocol.

You two are both clowns.............I ask a simple question that I was surprised that Obama doesnt even stand likes others at the national anthem and then you 2 children go on some kind of attack...............

as soon as the song started Obama covered

He never once during the song puts his hand over his chest.............while everyone else on stage does.............

You 2 are so involved in the show called a presidential election to even respond in a decent manner.........

OK........so what if the article was made up.........the video is not!!!

By the way Scott............I think you would have made a better VP candidate than Palin and thats not saying much but at least you know what I think of her...............

As for the hand over heart thing, I think the rendition was so bad that he couldn't even recognize the song.

If he is that stupid that he didnt even recognized the song then he must be retarded........again everyone else of stage knew what song it was.........

Amazing you two have proof right in front of your faces that it was an awkward moment and you two cant even admit it.........

AND Neither one of you answered my question???

Do you teach your kids (or would you) to act like this when the national anthem is played in a setting like that???

Did you notice when the camera panned to the right. John Edwards hands looked to be by his side.

Not everyone covers their heart during the anthem.

And Obama was singing some of the song and he clapped at the end.

Thanks for invite to be Vice Pres over Palin.

Only thing is McCain will not last the whole term with all his health related issues. Then I would have to be President.

And if you cant imagine me as President then you should really be worried about Palin / McCain

Palin as President in any way shape or form :scared

Its unthinkable. So how can anyone vote for the two of them .

Geez Louise

I hate politics.

Look, I don't mean to attack. I have no idea what what the situation was like at that Iowa corn rally or whatever it was. The candidates all had different poses and were looking in different directions. The other videos show him holding his hand over his heart.

You have made no admission of error regarding the Meet The Press thing or his comments which were never made. You bring in a phony story and then blame others when you are shown to be wrong.

Scott, Palin is more qualified than Obama, that's scary, not to mention Obama isn't a US citizen.

Indonesian citizen is what i've read.

Mr. McCain?s likely nomination as the Republican candidate for president and the happenstance of his birth in the Panama Canal Zone in 1936 are reviving a musty debate that has surfaced periodically since the founders first set quill to parchment and declared that only a ?natural-born citizen? can hold the nation?s highest office
