worth noting that -107 and -110 is a difference (I'll be it a small one) but say you wanted to play an Under in an NFL game and one book as Under 40 at -107 and another has Under 41 at -110 ...wouldn't it be worth the one point to take the Under 41 at -110

more to consider then just odds when looking at a line

just a thought :)

BTJ is dead-on. Pinnacle is one of the sponsors I will certainly be using most often this football season -105 on their spreads and -108 on their totals. Like someone else said they may be no frills but they pay on time and they hang early and competitive lines.

Jim is absolutely right in one sense but remember that a lot of times you won't find the softer lines at those reduced juice books. Also, sometimes at the regularly priced books the lines are up earlier for halftimes and the following week's games so you can get a great price by betting early if you know you are going to be on a certain side (usually the fave). One example is that I believe KC opened at -3 1/2 some places and now you will be hard pressed to find better than -5 1/2.

Another thing to consider is that a lot of books offer -105 lines on Fridays anyway.

I think the best thing to do is get at least 3 outs, hopefully more and yes, have at least a couple of those at reduced juice. When you make your plays, make a cursory check of the lines at other books and make a note which books are offering better prices on the plays you are making. If you see the same books coming up again and again then it might be a good idea to open an account at one of those books to see if you can get that extra 1/2 point now and then. IMO in football 1/2 point is definitely worth more than 3 cents of Vig. Good luck.

agreed 1/2 point can be key in the spread....that was kind of the point I was trying to get across.....Nick just explained it better :)

I think it would be better said that 1/2 point might be worth the 3 cents of vig. I don't think you should just blindly take the better line without understanding the situation. I completely agree that the 1/2 point, if the line is 3 1/2 points or less, makes sense. But as the lines get larger (or away from key numbers), I think it makes sense to pay less juice. I think if you see a line around 5.5, the odds of the extra half point making a difference is very slim. Also, if you get above double digits, unless you are right on 10 or 14, I don't think it's worth it.

(this discussion is pretty much like buying extra 1/2 points at higher vig - personally I never buy the extra points, but when shopping the books, I may pay -110 rather than -107, so I am in essence buying them).

Also, I personally never pay extra to turn a tie into a winner, but I might pay extra to turn a loser into a tie. By that, I mean that if I'm playing a favorite, I will pay extra juice to get the -3 instead of the -3 1/2. But I would not pay extra to turn a -3 into -2 1/2. While the odds of the game landing on 3 is higher than any other number, it's not high enough to justify paying extra juice to get the win at -2 1/2.

Remember, gambling is a long term proposition, and every little bit adds up, so the more you save on each individual play puts that much more in your pocket over the course of the season (or years).

FIRST OFF MJBARLEY YOUR ALL WET AND HERES WHY.ALMOST EVERY SPORTSBOOK THESE DAYS OFFSHORE ARE MOVING THE VIG ON THE # 3 AND THE # 7.THEY ARE ALL MAKING THE GAME - 2 1/2 THEN THEY GOUGE YO WITH THE VIG AND MAKE YOU LAY 120 SAMETHING ON THE NUMBER 7.SO NICK DOUGLAS WHY WOULD I WANT TO BET ON FRIDAY AT -105 WHEN FOR 2 CENTS MORE -107 I CAN WAIT UNTIL LATE SUNDAY AFTERNOON TO GET THE LINE MOVES.I WANT TO LAY -107 ON ALL GAMES THAT DONT LAND ON THE #3 AND 7 BECAUSE THESE NUMBERS THE SPORTSBOOKS WILL ALWAYS GOUGE YOU THESE DAYS.

IN THE OLD DAYS YOU WOULD GET -3 110 TO 100 AND IF YOU WANTED TO BUY THE EXTRA 1/2 POINT YOU LAID -120 NOW THE SPORTSBOOKS HAVE TAKEN AWAY THE OPTION TO BUY THE HALF AND JUST MAKE YOU LAY EXTRA JUICE YOU THE BETTOR GAVE NO OPTION PERIOD.
