Am I the only one wondering this? How hard is it to move from short to 2nd? Or how hard would it be to move A-Rod to 3rd? Are the positions THAT different? I'm really asking, I have no idea. The defense has always sucked anyway, its not like we would be worried about that. I played 2B/SS in high school but its nothing like say playing shortstop all your life and being used to one position? I guess?. The Sox would need a 2nd baseman in return anyway, and they wouldnt get anyone with near Nomars cache. Anyway, just a Sox fan stuck in DC wondering why I cant have A-Rod AND Nomar in the same lineup.

I don't think they can afford both of them. And I doubt Nomar would want to play second-base.

Nomar called WEEI, Boston's sports radio station, yesterday. He was asked if he would play another position and he wouldn't answer the question.

Personally I don't think they can afford to have both. I think if they had both they would have to pay the luxury tax and that's something they do not want to do...

Well they are going to have to pay the guys they get, I mean what do Jerod Washburn and Glaus make? Thats the latest crap I heard on the radio. But I agree they can afford to keep both. Apparently, Nomar behind the scenes hasnt been as open to signing an extension as he may want people to believe. But who knows. All I know is the hot stove league is unreal. Its almost like the Sox and Yankees are playing fantasy baseball, picking up all stars at will.

Has there been any word on Foulke?

What is the deal with Glaus and Washburn? Why in the world would they trade those two? At least Glaus doesn't choke in the postseason when he was there.
As for Nomar, I would not think it is that difficult. But I am tired of players who are unwilling to move positions due to ego or perhaps a hidden fear of failure. Players unwilling to DH fulltime, etc. Mike Piazza being a prime example. Should have moved to 1st base YEARS ago.

P.S.
At least some teams are trying to do something. Piss on you Dan Evans for letting Matsui get away to the Mets. Guess the gaping hole at leadoff/shortstop wasn't attention getting enough for you? (Sorry, bitter Dodger fan here)

No doubt, signing Robin Ventura was HUGE. Of course some realize he should have been a Dodger his whole career but we prefered drafting a pitcher who couldn't hit a broadside of a barn in one of the worst decisions in team history. Well Danny boy it is a little late to rectify it. I'll do the job if it is that hard.

I think starting this upcoming season Julio starts receiving social security checks along with his salary from the Braves.

moving from shortstop to 3rd would be a much easier move for nomar. a move to 2nd would be almost inconceivable. troy glaus made the move from shortstop to 3rd and he looks like a natural 3rd baseman now.

Henry: Nomar contract negotiations strained
By Bob Hohler, Globe Staff, 12/9/2003

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic -- Red Sox owner John Henry said today that negotiations for a contract extension with shortstop Nomar Garciaparra are strained. Calling it the "height of hypocrisy," Henry criticized Garciaparra's agent Arn Tellem for his recent comments about the team's trade talks involving Alex Rodriguez.

Tellem told the Globe earlier this week that the Red Sox' pursuit of Rodriguez was a "slap in the face" to his client and that Garciaparra's goal "has always been to return to the Red Sox and play out his entire career in Boston."

"He says we are being disingenuous,'' Henry said from the Dominican Republic where the Red Sox are opening a new facility. "I take great umbrage in that. It is the height of hypocrisy to make statements like that. I hope he is being more honest with his client than he is with media."

Garciaparra, who is in the final year of his contract and will make $11.5 million in 2004, has been negotiating with the Red Sox for an extension. Henry said the Red Sox made substantial offers to Garciaparra in the spring and again after the playoffs but those offers were rejected by Tellem.

According to one team source, the Red Sox offered $60 million over four years in spring training. In November, as the baseball market began to show effects of the new collective bargaining agreement with less money being offered to top players, the Red Sox changed their offer to between $12 and $13 million per year for four years. When Tellem objected to the market contraction, according to another team source, the Red Sox began looking into a trade for Rodriguez, which had been initiated by an earlier inquiry from the Rangers. The Sox and Rangers have been looking at a trade of Manny Ramirez to Texas for Rodriguez. If that move were made, the Sox likely would then look to trade Garciaparra.

"We have made incredible offers and the reason we are proceeding as if we're not going to be able to sign Nomar is because his agent has given us every indication that there is no common ground,'' Henry said. "He seems to believe it is the winter of 2000."

In December of 2000, for example, Rodriguez signed a $252 million deal for 10 years with Texas, and the Red Sox signed Manny Ramirez for $160 million for eight years. This year, Seattle offered Oakland A's free agent shortstop Miguel Tejada, the AL MVP in 2002, a deal worth approximately $8 million per year.

Henry said Tellem's comments could damage the negotiations. "When someone says that your are being disingenuous and you should be honest with the player -- and he said that publicly -- he (should) not dare say it publicly because he knows it's hooey,'' Henry said.

for some reason people say it is demeaning to ask players like nomar or jeter to change positions. i would think that players would do anything to help their team instead of thinking about themselves. but maybe not.

aren't the dodgers up for sale ?

maybe thats the reason why evans is not doing anything. he may have been told to not sign any players to major long term contracts until a new owner can be found.

If they keep them both and they can as a coach nomar would stay where he is at, a-rod has the build of a 3rd basemen and down the line he will end up playing 3rd or first because of his size will catch up to him in jis speed and he has the build for it and the reflexes also, 2nd baseb is easy to field when you have a guy at ss and 3rd like that, who cares if they guy hits 240 just get one who can field and turn the double play and trust me they are a dime a doz out there in the minors. if you think arod at his size will play his whole life at short you are fooling your self he is a freak for a short stop size wise much better to put him at third because down the road he will be there or first and nomar won't be. and it is a very big difference turning the double play from ss to 2nd, get a cheap fielding solid deff 2nd basemen and like i said trust me they are all over the place fielding wise but teams sometimes do not have a great option like this to get a guy just for deff and don;t worry about his stick, they have more then enough and there are many low priced guys in the minors who fit this bill, all he has to do with the bat is be able to bunt and move runners over and that is it a slap hitting number 2 hitter who can field. and they are set. and a-rod has played 3rd in miami in hs he can play either one, you watch i know i am right his large frame will force the move someday anyway to 3rd or 1st.
