I needed over on the Balt Game and it's not like they would have scored from their own territory, but why do defensive players keep intercepting when it's not to their advantage? I'm talking about the Balt interception on 4th and long. When we were kids we'd bat it down playing touch football on the playground.

Because when you were kids you weren't getting paid for picks...

Was hoping someone would come up with another explanation. I see it in college too though. It's amazing how players will hit the turf more often now due to the stripping techniques that so many use and not run out of bounds to keep the clock moving, but this aspect of the game to pad stats or get recognition continues.
Just an opinion.:0008

Automatic reflex. Athletes are not expected to think (except quarterbacks and a few others) but to learn by repetition. It's called muscle memory.

Afterwards all you can say is DOH!

Also, jocks are not exactly known to be geniuses. Sorry if this offends anyone, but it's true.

There was an NFL playoff game a day or two ago where some guy caught a blocked pass or something in the endzone and cost his team a couple of points. He should have dropped the ball. The commentators just said that he caught it out of reflex. Of course he was caught bare assed but that is what happens on occasion.

Blocked punts and field goals are the same. Why does Va Tech players always seem to know to scoop them up and run? And others don't? Cost Ark the game the other day and I saw PITT do the same thing yesterday.
Probably a combination of all of the above comments, but after athletes have the opportunity to watch so many games, films, and highlights as opposed to pass generations, you'd think there would be more smart ones.
I get a kick out of the RB's who don't hit the dirt on sweeps to keep the clock moving. The announcers act like they are geniuses. It's like applauding someone for coming to a complete stop at a STOP sign. :00hour :00hour :00hour

Because they are not smart football players, why else would you do it. Any "good" professional athlete should know the situation, rules, etc.. Goes back to coaching and how they learned to play the game.
I have seen this very thing happen time and time again, at least three time this year, it happened in the Rams/Sea. game a week ago. If I'm coaching these clowns I would pull the player aside at some point and try to explain to him how it is a mistake to intercept it in that situation. Let's see if its 4th down an in-completion is a turnover on downs at the line of scrimmage. Now would you rather us have the ball at our 25 or their 25?
Barring a short pass that is returnable you take the in-completed pass every time.

But hey, if we all had brains and were fast we'd be studs making millions. I would guess that many of these so-called professionals have made their way strictly on athleticism, speed/size and not their smarts. How many graduate these days?

As for padding stats or performance bonus, that's simple you fine or punish them somehow someway instead of rewarding them so they realize it was a mistake and actually hurt the team. Make them take the laundry to the cleaner, sweep the locker room, run laps, isn't that what you would expect to have to do after screwing up
Stats?? That's another reason why they should have absolutely nothing to do with bonus or pay.
