Georgetown (14-13) vs. Villanova (15-14)

DATE & TIME: Wednesday, March 12th, 7:00 p.m. (et).

FACTS & STATS: Site: Madison Square Garden (19,763) -- New York, New York.
Television: ESPN. Home Record: Georgetown 11-6, Villanova 9-4. Away Record:
Georgetown 3-7, Villanova 3-8. Neutral Record: Georgetown 0-0, Villanova 3-2.
Conference Record: Georgetown 6-10, Villanova 8-8. Series Record: Georgetown
leads, 32-23.

GAME NOTES: Having won eight straight opening round games in the Big East
Conference Tournament at Madison Square Garden, the fourth-seeded Villanova
Wildcats' streak just might come to an end, as they take on fifth-seeded
Georgetown Hoyas tonight in the opening round of the 24th annual event. As one
of a number of schools hitting the headlines because of off the court
activities rather than what goes on during games, 12 Wildcat players have been
identified as individuals who illegally used a university calling code to make
unauthorized connections, resulting in suspensions of between three and eight
games depending on the severity of the abuse. The Wildcats enter the
postseason on a four-game losing streak and have dropped nine of the last 12
contests overall. The Hoyas lost their season finale against nationally-ranked
Notre Dame over the weekend, the team's second setback in the last three
outings. Since the tournament began in 1980, the Hoyas have been the most
successful group in terms of championships, amassing six titles. Georgetown
won the first tournament and all six of their crowns during the first 10
years, with the most recent championship for the team coming in 1989 versus
Syracuse. Since then, the Hoyas have made it to the final round on four
occasions, but have come out on the losing end all four times. Overall, the
team has a tournament record of 37-17, the best winning percentage of any
school in the league. As for the Wildcats, they have just one title to their
credit following a 94-78 victory over UConn in 1995. Villanova has been to the
championship round five times and has just the one win to go along with their
24-21 record in the tournament. As far as the series between these two foes is
concerned, Georgetown leads the Wildcats by a count of 32-23. Villanova won an
83-72 decision last month between the squads giving it four straight wins in
the series, as the Hoyas have not been on the winning end of a contest with
'Nova since January 1998. The winner of this contest will face off against
nationally-ranked and the top seed from the West, Syracuse, in the
quarterfinal round on Thursday night.

One player does not a team make, and nowhere is that more apparent than in the
nation's capital where Mike Sweetney, one of two unanimous All-Big East
Conference selections and a candidate for All-American honors, leads the
attack for a team that finished just a game over .500 this year. Sweetney, a
55.1 percent shooter from the field, is averaging a double-double with 22.7
points and 10.4 rebounds per contest, not to mention registering 85 of the
unit's 174 blocked shots this year. More often than not, defenses hack away at
Sweetney in the paint, and when the fouls are called he has made 71 percent of
his 272 free-throw attempts. Also scoring in double figures for the squad this
year are guards Gerald Riley and Tony Bethel with 14.6 and 11.2 ppg,
respectively. Riley is the team's top perimeter threat, hitting 44.8 percent
of his attempts, which is better than his overall shooting from the field
(.435) this season. Defensively the team has held opponents to 40.7 percent
shooting from the floor this year and just 30-3 percent beyond the arc. The
Hoyas have also gotten lucky when sending the opposition to the charity
stripe, as they have converted just 68.2 percent of their chances.

The suspensions against Villanova took effect over the weekend, which forced
the team to play with just two reserves, who took no shots, grab zero rebounds
and have just three fouls on their collective stat line. And even with having
to go with the staring five almost the entire way, the Wildcats still lost by
just two points at home to seventh-ranked Pittsburgh. Instead of having sniper
Gary Buchanan and power forward Ricky Wright, two of the suspended, leading
the squad on the floor, the 'Cats are having to rely more on players like
Derrick Snowden and Allan Ray to make a run in the tournament. Ray is the
leading scorer among the remaining players, hitting for 10.2 ppg, while Randy
Foye adds 10.1 ppg. Unfortunately, both those players are having less than
productive year's from the field, Ray shooting just 38.3 percent from the
field and 31.7 percent behind the three-point line, while Foye is converting
36.6 percent of his field goal attempts and a miserable 28.9 percent beyond
the arc. Snowden (8.2 ppg), who is shooting just 64.6 percent at the free-
throw line, has been responsible for more than three and a half assists per
outing, but many of those were the result of Buchanan scores.

On Sunday afternoon in Philadelphia, the Wildcats were playing on pure emotion
and that's why they got to within a whisker of upsetting the Panthers. In this
case the novelty of a huge upset has worn off because the excitement is no
longer there, and neither will Villanova be in the next round. Inexperience
and lackluster play will cost the Wildcats dearly in this contest as
Georgetown moves on.

Pittsburgh
U-A-B (16-11) vs. Charlotte (13-15)

DATE & TIME: Wednesday, March 12th, 7:00 p.m. (et).

FACTS & STATS: Site: Freedom Hall (18,865) -- Louisville, Kentucky.
Television: ESPN+. Home Record: UAB 11-4, Charlotte 11-4. Away Record: UAB
3-7, Charlotte 2-11. Neutral Record: UAB 2-0, Charlotte 0-0. Conference
Record: UAB 8-8, Charlotte 8-8. Series Record: UAB leads, 23-14.

GAME NOTES: The eighth-seeded Charlotte 49ers have a long way to go to win
their third ever Conference USA Tournament Championship and it starts with a
first round battle against the ninth-seeded UAB Blazers from Freedom Hall in
Louisville this evening. The Blazers come into this games losers of their last
three, including a 90-79 defeat against nationally-ranked Memphis on Saturday.
It was just the fourth loss in 15 home games this season for UAB, while it
also dropped to 8-8 in the conference standings. The 49ers also finished the
year with a mark of 8-8 in C-USA action and on a losing note, as they fell to
15th-ranked Louisville, 100-59 on Saturday. The setback was the second in a
row, as they also registered an ugly 50-39 loss to one of the hottest teams in
the conference, Saint Louis prior to that. UAB has a 23-14 series advantage
all-time on the 49ers, but the Niners were able to pull out a 78-58 victory in
Birmingham earlier this season. Charlotte has also won the only two meetings
against the Blazers in the C-USA Tournament and have won three of the last
four meetings overall.

Morris Finley has been the main reason for the Blazers' success this season,
scoring a team-high 18.3 ppg on 42.0 percent shooting from behind the arc.
Finley is also collecting 3.1 rpg and dishing out 3.1 apg, while ranking
second on the team with 55 steals. Demario Eddins is the only other Blazer in
double figures, scoring 10.0 ppg, while Gabe Kennedy is chipping in 9.6 ppg
and collecting 4.5 rpg. Eddins paced the team in defeat against Memphis,
scoring 18 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the floor. Finley and Eric Bush
knocked in 15 points apiece, while shooting a combined 6-of-16 from three-
point land. Kennedy came off the bench to add 13 points and five boards,
helping UAB shoot 44.4 percent from the field and an encouraging 55.2 percent
in the second half of play. The Blazers were eaten alive at the defensive end
of the court, allowing Memphis to shoot 62.7 percent from the floor and a
blistering 52.9 percent from three-point land.

Demon Brown is a three-point wizard this season and leads the nation with an
average of 4.79 three-pointers made per game, while his 134 long range field
goals rank sixth all-time in NCAA history. Brown is the only Charlotte player
averaging in double figures, averaging 17.1 ppg on 39.4 percent shooting from
three-point territory. Curtis Withers has been in and out of the starting
lineup for the 49ers, but has still managed to turn in 9.7 ppg and 6.6 rpg,
despite shooting only 39.2 percent from the field. Brown paced the team in
defeat against Louisville, scoring 12 points on just 2-of-7 shooting from
behind the arc. Calvin Clemmons added 10 points and five boards, while Curtis
Nash finished with eight points on just 3-of-12 shooting from the floor. The
49ers managed to make only 36.4 percent of their field goal attempts and just
23.5 percent of their three-point attempts, while also turning the ball over
17 costly times.

Charlotte had been red hot until the last week of the season. The 49ers are a
C-USA Tournament tested team that could make some waves in the postseason, but
even if they get through the Blazers tonight, they than have to face one of
the best team's in the nation in the next round in Marquette.

After playing Memphis are 2-1
When playing on Wednesday are 5-5

Pittsburgh
Miami-Florida (11-16) vs. Seton Hall (16-11)

DATE & TIME: Wednesday, March 12th, 9:15 p.m. (et).

FACTS & STATS: Site: Madison Square Garden (19,763) -- New York, New York.
Television: ESPN. Home Record: Miami-Fla 9-5, Seton Hall 13-3. Away Record:
Miami-Fla 2-10, Seton Hall 3-7. Neutral Record: Miami-Fla 0-1, Seton Hall 0-1.
Conference Record: Miami-Fla 4-12, Seton Hall 10-6. Series Record: Seton Hall
leads, 12-9.

GAME NOTES: A couple of teams with opposite overall records hit the floor
tonight in the world's most famous arena as the third-seeded Seton Hall
Pirates contend with the sixth-seed in Miami-Florida in the first round of the
Big East Conference Tournament at Madison Square Garden. Putting aside their
two-game slide to close out the 2002-03 regular season, a 64-61 overtime loss
to Providence on Saturday and an 86-54 thumping by nationally-ranked
Pittsburgh three days earlier, the Pirates were one of the hottest teams in
the conference down the stretch. Prior to the brief skid last week the team
had put together a nine-game win streak which pushed it to third place in the
West Division. As for the Hurricanes, they had a couple of moments to look
back upon fondly this year, but other than that they closed out the year with
six defeats in seven games. However, more often than not Miami, a member of
the East Division, appeared to be in contention in those contests, such as its
76-73 setback versus the St. John's Red Storm in the season finale on
Saturday. With respect to the conference tournament and past experiences, the
Hurricanes have generated a record of 6-11 and are one of the six current
schools that have yet to win a title. On the other side, Seton Hall has an
18-21 mark and has two tournament crowns, the last coming in 1993 when the
Pirates defeated Syracuse, 103-70, with their scoring output still setting the
standard in the championship game. This game marks the 22nd meeting between
these two schools on the hardwood, with the Pirates holding a 12-9 advantage
over Miami. The Hurricanes have won five of the last seven contests versus the
Hall, although the Pirates claimed the lone regular season affair in 2002-03,
76-53, at Continental Airlines Arena. The winner of this contest will compete
against the Pittsburgh Panthers in the second round on Thursday afternoon.

Andre Barrett was a big part of the success of the Pirates this season,
leading the squad in both scoring and assists with averages of 17 points and
five dishes per contest. He shot a respectable 43.8 percent from the field but
only 38.1 percent behind the three-point line, for a team that generally shied
away from taking chances on the perimeter except for Barrett's 53-of-139 from
long range. John Allen checks in with 13.8 ppg to go along with his near five
rebounds per contest. However, he is shooting just 24.4 percent beyond the arc
and had produced 96 turnovers in 27 games. Kelly Whitney completes the list of
double-digit scorers for the squad with 10.6 ppg and is the leading man on the
glass with 6.3 rpg. He is shooting a team-best 51.9 percent from the field but
a miserable 53.9 percent at the free-throw line. Defensively the squad has
held opponents to 42.4 percent from the floor, 32.7 percent shooting behind
the three-point line and a mere 66.3 ppg as a result.

Leading the team in scoring in 11 of the last 15 contests, Darius Rice has
made himself into a feared shooter in the Big East. He made headlines and
highlight reels in late January when he posted a career-high 43 points on then
nationally-ranked UConn and hit the game winning three-pointer following a
steal of an inbounds pass in the closing seconds. His scoring average has
swelled to 19 ppg, while reaching 21 ppg against the rest of the conference
this season. He is second on the team in rebounding with 5.8 rpg, but has been
less than stellar when it comes to getting his teammates the ball in scoring
situations, registering only 32 assists in the 26 games in which he has
played. James Jones, who more often than not was the other player on the team
leading them in scoring, is hitting for 17.1 ppg and is the leader on the
glass with six boards a game.

This may be another case of the Hurricanes rising up and stealing a win from a
team that is regarded as being at a higher level this year. As long as they
can keep their number of turnovers down and continue to be accurate at the
free-throw line, there's no reason Miami can't make it happen.

Pittsburgh
Eastern Washington (18-11) vs. Weber State (25-5)

DATE & TIME: Wednesday, March 12th, 9:05 p.m. (et).

FACTS & STATS: Site: Dee Events Center (12,000) -- Ogden, Utah.
Television: ESPN2. Home Record: E. Washington 9-2, Weber St. 11-0. Away
Record: E. Washington 7-6, Weber St. 9-4. Neutral Record: E. Washington 2-3,
Weber St. 5-1. Conference Record: E. Washington 9-5, Weber St. 14-0. Series
Record: Weber State leads, 26-13.

GAME NOTES: As expected, the top two seeds in the Big Sky navigated the
tournament field, and find themselves one win away from a berth in the NCAA
Tournament. The top-seeded Weber State Wildcats shook off some rust from a 10-
day layoff on Tuesday and then proceeded to rout sixth-seeded Sacramento State
in semifinal action, 82-60. The Wildcats cruised to the Big Sky regular season
title, going undefeated in league play (14-0), just one of three teams in the
nation to do so (Kentucky and Pennsylvania). Second-seeded Eastern Washington
also earned an opening round bye with a 9-5 league ledger this season. While
not quite as impressive as Weber State's win, the Eagles still managed to
advance with a comfortable 76-67 triumph over fourth-seeded Idaho State on
Tuesday, giving head coach Ray Giacoletti, his 100th career win. This is a
rematch of last year's semifinal meeting, won by Eastern Washington, 62-57.
The Eagles have not fared well on Weber State's home floor over the years, as
they have won just twice in 19 matchups in Ogden. The Wildcats are trying to
complete the trifecta, after posting a pair of regular season wins over EWU.
The Eagles are in the title game for the third straight season, but have still
yet to claim a tournament title. In fact, it has been 20 years since EWU has
earned a tournament crown (1982). Weber State owns the most Big Sky Tournament
titles (six), but hasn't won it since 1999.

The veterans led the way and the rest of the team followed, as Eastern
Washington registered a nine-point win over the Bengals in semifinal action,
earning a trip to the Big Sky Championship Game for the third straight season.
Two-time All-Big Sky First-Team member Alvin Snow led the offensive charge for
EWU, going 5-of-11 from the floor and a perfect 11-of-11 from the charity
stripe to finish with a team-high 22 points. Fellow all-conference performer
Chris Hester added 15 points, followed by guard Brendon Merritt
(all-conference honorable mention) and center T.J. Williams, who added 14 and
12 points, respectively. Williams just missed a double-double with nine
rebounds. The Eagles won the battle on the boards (38-31) as well as outscored
Idaho State from the free-throw line (24-13). Hester, Snow and Merritt
provide solid scoring depth for EWU, as all three average double figures.
Hester leads the way at 13.8 ppg, but Snow (13.5 ppg) and Merritt (11.2 ppg)
aren't far behind.

Weber State trailed the Hornets early on in Tuesday's semifinal matchup, but
made up for it in a hurry. as the Wildcats blew by Sacramento State, en route
to the championship game. The Wildcats displayed some solid defense, holding
Sacramento to .346 shooting in the first half (9-of-26), as well as forcing a
whopping 20 turnovers in the game. Forward Slobodan Ocokoljic was unstoppable
in the low post, finishing with a double-double of 23 points and 10 rebounds
(both game-highs). With Ocokoljic owning the paint, Big Sky Player of the Year
Jermaine Boyette was able to light it up from his guard position, tallying 20
points, while dishing out six assists. A second-half team all season long,
Weber State did it again on Tuesday. After shooting just .444 from the floor
in the first half, the Wildcats caught fire after the break, knocking down
56.7 percent from the floor over the final 20 minutes. A deep offensive team,
the Wildcats' cupboard is full, led by Boyette, who averages a robust 20.1
ppg. Ocokoljic (15.4 ppg, 8.1 rpg) is the team's muscle inside, while guard
John Hamilton (11.2 ppg) and forward Nic Sparrow (10.0 ppg) provide more than
enough support.

The Eagles are a tough team, especially lately in this tournament, but Weber
State ran the table in the Big Sky and getting this game at home only adds to
the Wildcats' advantage. With Boyette letting it fly from all over the court
and Ocokoljic getting it done inside, Weber State should be able to get by the
Eagles, while returning to the Big Dance.

Good find on Weber St. Really like them here -7. I see this game being similar to that of the Drexel UNCW game. Two solid teams but the superior comes out on top handidly. Add to th fact that Weber is looking for the complete conference sweep plus its on their homecourt, they will be jacked up tonite. Weber St BIG.

Totally agree with your reasoning ststrl. Home court is going to play a major factor in this game. Weber State will cover this easily.

Also improved to 2-1 today with the lose coming with Notre Dame, and the two wins from South Florida and the blowout by Providence.

Providence will have their work cut out for them tomorrow when they take on Pitt. Pitt beat them but 6 or so earlier this year.

Once again good luck tonight

2 more Weber points, first off I think their closest home game was a win over BYU by 6 points and secondly everytime a MWC team travels to AF, Utah, BYU, and Colo St everyone is always saying, "well it'll be difficult for them to adjust to the altitude." Is this a concern here? Granted EWU beat Idaho St handidly in Ogden last night, just a thought. The more I look at this game the more I like Weber St. Let's get'em tonite, and GL ;)
