It's the big game before the big game.
Before the national championship football contest Monday between Clemson and Alabama (8:30 p.m. on ESPN), there is a Southern Conference basketball showdown between two-time defending champion Wofford and preseason favorite Chattanooga at 6 p.m. in the Benjamin Johnson Arena.
The tip time was moved up an hour to make sure Spartanburg-area folks can watch both. That undercard, the warm-up act, might be quite a show as well.
?I think it will be great,? said Wofford senior guard Spencer Collins, who led Wofford to a remarkable comeback Saturday by scoring 12 straight points as the Terriers scored the last 14 in a 69-65 victory at home against Samford to go 3-0 in league play. ?We play a really great Chattanooga team. They've been one of the top competitors in our conference for the past few years.?
Chattanooga served notice early by beating Georgia in the opening game of the season and then Illinois in the third game. UTC also beat Dayton and did it without Casey Jones, the preseason player of the year.
The Mocs (13-3) did suffer their first league defeat Saturday afternoon in the upstate, breaking an eight-game overall winning streak with a 70-55 loss at Furman.
?They went over there and got hit between the eyes,? Wofford head coach Mike Young said. ?They had a little eye-opener. They'll come in here with their teeth set. So will we.?
