BEIJING (XFN-ASIA) - Aluminum Corp of China Ltd (Chalco) expects to make a statement tomorrow, clarifying the reason it requested a halt in trading of its shares today in both Shanghai and Hong Kong, a Chalco spokesperson said.
Chalco is China's biggest aluminum and alumina firm.
'We are likely to release a statement tomorrow, though we cannot clarify the timing nor content at this time,' spokesperson Zhang Qing said.
Shares of Northern China-based Baotou Aluminium Co Ltd, which is indirectly controlled by Chalco, were also suspended from trading today after it told the Shanghai bourse a have ry important' announcement was pending.
'We have been informed by Chalco that there is important news related to us that will be disclosed soon,' Baotou Aluminium said in a statement to the exchange.
In Shanghai yesterday, Chalco closed at 23.08 yuan and in Hong Kong it last traded at 10.50 hkd. Baotou ended at 26.74 yuan in Shanghai.
When asked if the trading halts were related to the planned 6.18 bln hkd takeover of Canada's Peru Copper by Chalco's parent Chinalco, Zhang said he had no information on any such transaction.
Canada's Peru Copper said it has agreed to a 6.18 bln hkd cash takeover offer by Chinalco.
The deal will allow Chinalco -- the world's second-largest producer of alumina -- to complete its diversification into upstream copper mining, after it previously bought several mainland copper smelting and processing companies.
