It Would Have Prevented Another 9/11? I was watching Nightline last night and they brought up some viable questions about the type of interrogations that the US had given their prisoners. By the Geneva Accords, one is not allowed to directly torture his prisoner physically or mentally. They brought up a scenario that I thought was very interesting. An interrogator would be allowed to say, "I will have someone kill your family if you don't give me information," but would not be allowed to directly threaten him/her by saying, "I will kill you if you don't talk."

They brought up a very good question. If it was three months before 9/11 or some other horrific terrorist attack, how far would you allow our "people" to go in getting information if were to prevent such an attack on US?

Quite an interesting question Cman.

Will give you my thoughts.
Geneva stuff was written for conventional soilders and wars.
Terrorist do not fit in this catagory to my thinking as they deem cilvilians the easiest of targets and direct their crimes more so that direction than militarily and they have no rules.

I think the actual military of Iraq (when we invaded) should be treated with same respect as we would like our soilders treated --- but with known terrorist--let the punishment fit the crime.

Why don't we concentrate our efforts on fixing the problem instead of trying to find out what punishment is appropriate. You eye for an eye guys scare me.

I think we should concentrate on eliminating terrorist by what ever means possible--instead of finding ways to defend them and have them released or making sure we don't profile them;)

As I said above all soilders have rights defined by Geneva Convention--Terrorists are not soilders and have no rights IMHO.

I honestly have no idea how I would answer that question. It's a pretty tough line to toe, IMO.

However, if you take the belief that if they are terrorists then anything goes and they have no rights, you can't possibly be the least bit surprised when they retaliate by doing things like severing the head of an American civilian.

in world war II we were worried about the nazi's striking American soil. we were told that new york was a probable target. the navy figured that maybe to deal with nazi's we needed to get the help of people that weren't restricted to The Geneva convention. We recruited Bugsy Siegel and Meyer Lansky to help out. Sometimes you need to get medievel on someones ass. now some people are crying about the cia being tougher than they should on top Al Queda members. this isn't romper room. do whatever it takes to get the info.

That is probably 100 percent true. But like I said above... if you take that point of view, you have to be prepared to deal with things like POW beheadings as an attack on that point of view. I, like you, certainly don't think that's right, but not acknowledging that it may happen is a mistake.

I have never understood the "turn the other cheek" theory and would have to ask them at what point do you fight--
after they slap you out of your chair-your wife out of her chair-or when they turn to your children--or not at all:confused:
