Between Green Bay and Iowa City
NCAA YTD: 7-6 (+0.50*)
- - Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda.

California(-14) over Maryland (1*)

California(-13') over Washington State (1*)
- - It's certainly O.K. to question the chemistry (the off season point of emphasis, and partly attributable for decision by HC Tedford to give up many of his play calling duties) and fundamentals of recent Cal teams, but no reason to question the presence of speed, talent and playmakers, then or now, in all three phases, and now stepping into conference play to build on an opener in which the receivers were "psyched" about their pancake blocks. The Cougars, not so much.

- - "After the game, (right tackle) Mitchell Schwartz came up to me and asked, 'Did we play well today?' " said (QB Kevin) Riley, who completed only 6 of 14 passes for 51 yards and lost a fumble (before being relieved). "

38-31: Down 10-0 early, Michigan State got back in it with the help of Cal quarterback Nate Longshore, whose awful play down the stretch last year played a large role in the Bears' 1-6 finish to the regular season . . . Longshore lost his job to Riley in training camp, but was promised playing time by Tedford. The senior threw terrible interceptions on both of his possessions, including an inexplicable throw into quadruple coverage that was returned by Wiley for the Spartans' first score . . . The Cal crowd roared when Riley returned to the game, and the sophomore immediately threw back-to-back lengthy completions to Best and Sean Young, setting up Best's 1-yard sprint around the end.

- - Value with the Cyclones . . . So far Iowa hasn't even had to respond to taking a shot to the jaw or a swing in momentum. Maybe the Hawkeyes and/or Cyclones will do some things so Iowa wins going away, BUT when I look at ways this game will actually play itself out, there is no friggin' way I would conclude the scenarios under which Iowa covers this huge spread are "more likely than not" (i.e., 50%+) . . . On a side note, Ricky Stanzi just gave a compelling performance as the guy the Hawkeyes have been looking for at QB.

Baylor(+2) over Washington State (1*)
- - Wrong team is favored. I shoulda played +110ML, but the wager is already in.
Baylor(-2') over Washington State (1+)
- - Well, scratch the first bet. There's nothing about this bet that I like as much as I did with the first bet (even the short week for travel and adjusting on the fly), but the fundamental aspects still rate strong enough to overcome the changing and fluid and harder to cap situational aspects.
