Yankees reach agreement with Teixeira on 8-year, $180M deal Story Highlights

By Jon Heyman, SI.com

The Yankees beat out the Red Sox and Nationals to sign slugger Mark Teixeira.

The Yankees have reached an agreement in principle to sign Mark Teixeira, SI.com has learned, beating out the rival Red Sox for the free-agent slugger's services.

Teixeira, who hit .308 with 33 home runs and 121 RBIs in 2008, will receive an eight-year, $180 million deal from the Yankees with a full no-trade provision.

The final three teams in the race to sign Teixeira were the Red Sox, Nationals and Yankees. However, it was the Yankees who stepped up their heavy pursuit of Teixeira on Tuesday, as first reported by SI.com.

The Yankees quietly remained in contact with the Teixeira camp, but after spending $243.5 million on star starting pitchers CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett, they didn't appear anxious to be the market setter.

The Red Sox threw a curveball late last week when owner John Henry announced they were no longer "going to be a factor'' following a meeting at Teixeira's Dallas-area house. But after a little while, it became clear that Henry only meant that they intended not to up their bid, not that they were pulling out of the derby entirely.

While Henry's team remained in the running, Angels owner Arte Moreno pulled out for real on Sunday, announcing they had given up the chase. Moreno had submitted a proposal believed to be for $160 million at the Winter Meetings and hadn't moved from that initial offer.

While there were rumors that the Severna Park, Md., product preferred to be on the East Coast, there never was any real evidence of that. He loved his time in Anaheim and continued to live in the Dallas area, so those suggestions may have been overplayed.

Teixeira's deal raises the Yankees' offseason spending spree to $423.5 million. Just last Thursday, they gave Sabathia a $161 million, seven-year contract and Burnett an $82.5 million, five-year deal.

The Yankees, preparing to move into their pricey new ballpark, will hold the four largest contracts in the sport. Third baseman Alex Rodriguez has baseball's highest deal at $275 million over 10 years, and shortstop Derek Jeter is second at $189 million over 10 years.

sec....

if you read the ny papers you would know it wasn't out of nowhere...they were monitoring everything & waiting for the right moment...

i am glad that they got him instead of manny...eventhough he is a great hitter, not a manny fan

it just seemed like it came from out of nowhere cause all i read out in the LA papers were the usual suspects of Angels, Red Sox, Nationals, and Orioles. They never really mentioned the Yanks.

I agree I'd much rather have Tex than Man Ram. And I'm glad my halos say they aren't going after Man Ram. I guess it's another season without that coveted big stick in Anaheim.

How big of a competitive advantage do the Yankees need to try & win??

Why dont they just play against NCAA teams. That should be a playing field they are comfortable with accepting.

Baseball is a joke.

Hello KC Royals your payroll is $66 million. The Yankees is $900 trillion. Sounds fair to us. Try & compete.

i agree with you...but the yanks play by the rules...if baseball was concerned they would change the rules...& we have seen the biggest payroll doesn't guarantee anything...

I'm a Red Sox fan and I'm a bit disappointed that the Yanks did indeed get Texiera, I was hoping the Sox would grab him. Yanks still have alot of holes to fill especially in the outfield. Should be an interesting season.

A total joke baseball is. WTF, they might as well sign Manny too, don't forget about Peavy. Is there anyone else out there I am missing? I just can't stand the sport. Sure the Yankees are in the rules, but when is it enough?

glad the orioles didn`t get him....hometown or not,he would have been an idiot to ruin his career and sign with these losers....i have rodent-mojo on their owner angelos....

scum-bag class action lawyer(sorry for being redundant) ripping people off and giving them crumbs...

he`s destroyed a once great franchise(see the last ten years)and i wish nothing but failure on the franchise until his family is purged from it....

the HATERS ARE OUT so everyone roots for the twins were the owner pockets everything he makes and doesn't reinvest in his team and ManRam back in boston put the pipe down..............BTW money never wins a ring look at TB they don't spend at all but they were in the big dance and they beat the 2nd highest payroll to get there. Tex is was a yankee fan growing up the biggest (well 2nd biggest reason) he signed there this is good stuff BTW MERRY CHRISTMAS YANKEE FANS it is gonna be alot of fun in years to come

The Yankees are by far the laughing stock of sports right now.

Spending all this money when our country is in such bad shape is a slap in the face to the American people.

what are you kidding....

did the yankees take money from anybody to pay for these free agents ? did they force anybody to sigm with them ?

they are one of the few franchises in baseball who give back to their fans...by trying to win...you should criticize the owners who take their fan base for granted & put minor leaguers on the field & call them major leaguers.....& pocket their money instead...those are the ones who should be criticized..the yanks play by the rules & support the other teams by paying the luxury tax...& what do some of these owners do with this tax money...they pocket it instead of putting it into player development...the yanks alo bring fans in when they travel sell out, thus giving the home team owners more money.....

AL your points are fair and well taken...BUT you fail to point out, their ticket prices are obscene and through the roof....of course theyll never lower ticket prices, so to justify the expensive suites and corporate tickets, they buy every player in sight...Of course they couldnt pocket all the revenue, then people wouldnt attend the games as much...1 hand washes the other, lets not make the yankees out to be saints here it's sickening to live here and have to hear these myopic fans year after year

this will be my last comment on this....

i never said that the yanks are saints...i just said they are playing by the rules that baseball has set.....& i don't necessarily like the idea of buying players....i grew up in an era where the teams played their homegrown players & traded for whoever they needed....i like that better....but as long as they are following the rules, people shouldn't complain..& if fans are disgusted by it then they shouldn't go to see the yanks play...that will send a message...

happy holidays guys...
