Mariano Rivera told the Associated Press Tuesday he plans to be back in the Yankees' bullpen before the end of the season and could start throwing again within a week. He is on the disabled list retroactive to August 16 with a strained right shoulder. Rivera is currently treating the shoulder with rest and exercise at the Yankees' minor league complex.

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- St. Louis Cardinals closer Jason Isringhausen had an MRI and took a cortisone shot in his right shoulder Tuesday, and will be sidelined at least a few more days.

``He's not ready to pitch yet,'' manager Tony La Russa said. ``We'll monitor it. I don't think he'll pitch in the series, so he's series to series.''

Isringhausen, who has 28 saves, was hurt warming up Friday. He's optimistic he won't be out much longer, although another MRI was scheduled in a few days.

``Everything went good and nothing was bad,'' Isringhausen said. ``Hopefully by the weekend we'll see what's going on.''

Until he's back, the Cardinals have right-hander Dave Veres and left-hander Steve Kline available. Veres was the closer the previous two seasons, and has three saves this year. Kline also has three saves.

``We're fortunate we've got several guys who have gotten the last out in the game,'' La Russa said. ``We'll see who's the freshest, who has to pitch later, who we're playing.''
