Weinke out, Peete in as the starting QB in Carolina. Might even be demoted to 3rd string behind Fasani.

ESPN's Len Pasquarelli reports just one week shy of the season opener, the Carolina Panthers has elected to bench QB Chris Weinke and elevate QB Rodney Peete to the starting job. Team and league sources confirmed that, after evaluating the position, the organization feels Peete offers the Panthers the best chance to win. "It's just something we felt we had to do after looking at the situation," said one Panthers official. An official announcement is expected Monday from HC John Fox. The Panthers open the season at home against the Baltimore Ravens next Sunday. Coaches and team officials Monday will further discuss Weinke's status. Because he triggered a series of "escalators" and bonuses in his contract by playing so much in 2001, it is unlikely Weinke would be released. It is, however, possible he could slip to No. 3 on the depth chart behind Peete and rookie QB Randy Fasani, a fifth-round choice from Stanford.

LMAO!!!

LMAO!!!

from this morning's charlotte newspaper service:

? Should Chris Weinke or Randy Fasani start at quarterback? Thanks to the Labor Day weekend, this question won't be a topic for office chats or talk radio until Tuesday. It shouldn't even be a question. Weinke is the franchise quarterback, at least for the foreseeable future. He has an incentive-heavy contract and the Panthers spent the off season tailoring their offense to his strengths.

Weinke did not have a great preseason, but he looked pretty good in the first two exhibitions. Anyone who saw training camp practices could clearly see Weinke is Carolina's best quarterback. Veteran backup Rodney Peete is second best and the depth chart will reflect that.

Despite what is sure to be popular public opinion, Fasani will be the third quarterback and that's precisely what he should be. He looked pretty good at times in the preseason. Then again, Dameyune Craig looked pretty good in a preseason game once and, amazingly, he parlayed that (and nothing else) into a three-year stay in the NFL. Remember, most of Fasani's success came against defensive players who won't make regular-season rosters.

Maybe Fasani, who wasn't all that productive in college, someday will be the next Joe Montana. The early signs were encouraging and he showed good intangibles, but Fasani is a project. In a best-case scenario, he spends this season as the third quarterback and moves up to No. 2 next year. If Weinke struggles this year, then maybe Fasani becomes a legitimate alternative next season.
