Kerry Rolls into Detroit

Press pass puts locals in an up-roar with picture of import car.

When one thinks of Michigan, it doesn’t take a mental leap to think of cars. The American auto giants have been (pardon the pun) the driving force behind much of the state’s economy. American’s take a great deal of pride in their cars, and it isn’t hard to see the direct ties between national pride and auto pride--especially in Michigan.

So when U.S. democratic presidential nominee John Kerry (no, he isn’t even the candidate yet kids), made his "stump stop" in Detroit to rally supporters for his upcoming presidential run, his media people knew how to cater to the steel town boys. The speech was full of comments about hard working American labor, "I’ve met steelworkers and mineworkers and autoworkers who have seen their jobs and equipment unbolted before their eyes and shipped overseas," Kerry said in his address to the National Urban League on the 22nd.

All was well until someone took a close look at the press pass for the event. The Campaign press pass featured a picture of an 100EX, a concept convertible car by Rolls Royce, a British-based German-owned company.

The campaign has made attempts at excuses and apologies for the mishap. The Kerry Edwards Campaign has been featuring locally inspired graphics on all their press passes across the country.

However, perhaps the best choice here would have been the jackass.

I also wonder what Michael Moore's answer to Detriot would be seeing how critical he was in 'Roger & Me.' Since we are fighting this ficticious war for oil what would happen to Detriot's Auto Industry if the price of gas rose to that of Europe? What answers does he suggest? Japanese cars are very compact and reliable, but I buy 'American' and also try to conserve and be economical- When I was stationed in Japan the Japanese Nationals had to have a permit to own a motorcycle over 750cc's. All those Kawasaki 900's, Goldwings, etc., were mostly exported to the states...circa 1980.
I don't agree w/Detriots gas guzzlers, but there was a market for all those SUV's and other high priced 'toys.' Not blaming anyone, but I wonder if Moore ever stopped to think about this? does he just criticize or what part he play in the solution.
