Is Rush racist?

Limbaugh blasts McNabb on ESPN's Sunday pre-game show....

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Donovan McNabb has been to three straight Pro Bowls and two consecutive NFC championship games, and was runner-up for NFL MVP in his first full season as a starter.

Still, commentator Rush Limbaugh questions his credentials.

Before McNabb led the Philadelphia Eagles to a 23-13 victory over the Buffalo Bills, Limbaugh said on ESPN's Sunday NFL Countdown that McNabb is overrated. The comment contained racial overtones that set off a controversy.

"I don't think he's been that good from the get-go," Limbaugh said. "I think what we've had here is a little social concern in the NFL. The media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well. There is a little hope invested in McNabb, and he got a lot of credit for the performance of this team that he didn't deserve. The defense carried this team."

An ESPN spokesman said Tuesday that Limbaugh doesn't do interviews and added that he didn't think the comments were racially biased.

"He was comparing McNabb's performance on the field to his reputation in the media," spokesman Dave Nagle said.

Nagle said that with Limbaugh on the show this season, ratings for Sunday NFL Countdown are up 10 percent overall, and 26 percent among the 18-to-34 male demographic. Sunday's show drew its biggest audience in the regular season since November 1996.

"ESPN hired Limbaugh for his passion and his ability to express opinion and spark debate as a football fan," Nagle said. "In just one month, he has certainly delivered."

Limbaugh is best known as the radio host of the conservative politically focused Rush Limbaugh Show, which is syndicated in more than 650 markets worldwide.

He spent most of the 1990s assailing then-President Clinton and now spends Sunday mornings talking football, a job he called "the fulfillment of a dream."

A decade ago, there were few black quarterbacks in the NFL. This season, 10 of the 32 teams will have started black quarterbacks in at least one game.

Seven black quarterbacks started NFL games last weekend and two of the best, Michael Vick and Daunte Culpepper, were on the sidelines with injuries. The veteran Rodney Peete also has started a game for Carolina, meaning that when Vick returns from his broken leg.

"I think the Philadelphia Eagles and the city of Philadelphia are very lucky to have Donovan McNabb," Eagles coach Andy Reid said, calling his quarterback "the best in the business."

McNabb got off to the worst start of his career this season and was the NFL's lowest-rated starting quarterback after losses to Tampa Bay and New England. He was criticized heavily for his bad start, which came after a subpar effort in Philadelphia's 27-10 loss to the Buccaneers in January's NFC title game.

Still, the Eagles are 36-22 in games he started.

"It's sad that you've got to go to skin color. I thought we were through with that whole deal," McNabb told the Philadelphia Daily News.

Sorry I read the article and do not find the comments to be racist, I just think that he does not like McNabb as a QB! Donovan is one of my all time favorite QB's so all it does to me is piss me off that someone slammed his credentials for being a bad a$$ QB! Nothing more nothing less!

I dont find them racist either. I also find it unbelievable the same news outlets that gave Dusty Baker a virtual pass on his comments this summer are jumping up and down on Rush's head. The lead tagline on CNN was "RACIST RUSH?" I mean give me a break, ESPN knew exactly what they were getting into.

Puhleeeeease! They're just trying to get ratings for that show. I was watching and didn't sound too racist at the time, probably something several people have thought about. That does not make it right or worong, just an opinion. They gotta get that phat phuck Limburger some way to increase ratings, huh?

Personally, I'll take a healthy Mike Vick against anybody as my hope for a QB of any persuasion. ;)

I gotta agree with Rush when he says Mcnabb is a little over rated. He wouldn't take a hit in the playoffs last year. All I saw him do was run out of bounds. The record this year, I know it's early, but they the whole team doesn't really look all that impressive. An average QB at best. And the racist thing, come on,why does the media push the issue???

When are we ever going to get past the racist issues ????

I find it a racist comment. He said "The media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well. " If that isn't a racist comment I don't know what is. He could have made the point the McNab is not all he is cut out to be without mentioning race.
We discuss players here all the time among ourselves. We call them chokers, hackers, overrated, and even worse. But we usually don't say something like "He is another black crybaby." Or "He is nothing but another Latino pitcher who can't finish a game."
Rush slipped and threw race into a conversation that should have nothing to do with race. Either McNab is a good quarterback or not. He doesn't have to be rated as a good black quarterback or not.
What the Hel is a good black quarterback anyway? Is a good black quarterback as good as a good white quarterback?
All I care about is the point spread and who wins the game. If I have my money on a guy who just threw his fourth interception I'm Pi$$ed and I don't care what color he is.

last two seasons (by far his best two seasons) the guy has ranked 7th and 8th in QB rating.....yet he has consistently hyped as one of the best QB's in the game with many touting him as MVP material last year.......

then he goes out and backup AJ Feeley leads team to 5-1 finish.....

not to mention his playoff performances

now why then IS he over-rated if it doesn't have to do with people touting him because of his skin color in today's PC media which is rampant in the sports scene?

I think it probably has to do with the multiple division titles and NFC title game appearances his team has made. Look how much credit Brady got when the Pats won the Super Bowl with defense even though he's a horseshit QB.

i dont think anyone thinks Brady is worth anything anymore and naturally he got the hype that follows a super bowl win...

but still, you have these guys week in and week out touting McNabb as one of the top QB's in the league....

So last two seasons he rated 7 & 8. I would say anyone in top 1/3 of the league would be in the better or best range. Forsure we all watch Sunday games. I guess and can pick the bottom 50% easy.

this does not make rush a racist. rush is foundering in his new role. he does not belong on espn and he is shurting for material. let us not make too much of this. he goofed up bad. his choosing this topic is typical rush. he trys to strike nerves. unfortunately he is on tv and not radio.

Limbaugh "resigns" from Countdown, what a damn shame. I thought the whole purpose of having him on there was for his opinions? That's a crock of sh*t. :nooo:

PEOPLE ARE TOO DAMN SENSITIVE

its really unbelievable the power the PC crowd has in the media....

i don't think race had anything to do with it personally....Steve McNair is a classic example being a much better quarterback than McNabb -- its more of an east coast bias.......but.....what IF it was a factor? is it un-American to raise such a possibility? or is it un-American to censor such questioning of the media???

obviously he was railroaded out of there....very unfortunate we can't have someone on there that isn't just reading off prompts regardless his views.....

cant have jimmy the greek, rush limbaugh, dennis miller, or anyone who shoots from the hip anymore...just a bunch of talking robots

your last comment may be interpreted as being offensive to certain robots.......:nono:

it`s downright orwellian....excuse censorship....control dissent by nurturing popular fear and hatred....does anybody think that firing someone for such bland comments does anything but stir resentment?..........just look at the comments in this forum...

and forget that it`s limbaugh...i can`t stand the guy myself...but this stuff is getting absurd....

Michael Irvin a classic example....
