Well, I'm glad he resigned because I hate him and don't think he has any place on that show and now I'm willing to watch it again. However....

I don't think he should've had to. Anyone who has ever listened to his radio show (which I had to for two years in college since my boss was a big fan) knows that far worse bullshit than that spews from his mouth, so I have to say I'm a bit shocked to hear that. ESPN obviously knew what it was getting. I wonder how it all went down, as ABC Sports' President backed him earlier today in an interview. Although I don't see it out of a guy like him, I guess there is a chance he realized his presence would turn what would be a good show into a circus, and decided to just end it.

But still, he said it to get a reaction, and that's sure what he got.

I still think the reason people think McNabb is such a good QB isn't because he's black, but because he led team to two straight division titles and NFC title games.

Oh man do I agree 100 percent with that. You see it on the announcer's booth, too. When I was at school, guys on the team would ask me who was favored in what game and such, and they'd try and tell me, "Oh, such-and-such is going to cover that easy." The only thing that would be easy would be buying a new house of you took those guys' bets.

Personally, I couldn't give a crap whether it was Rush Limbaugh or Ron Jeremy, it just sucks that he got forced out for voicing his opinion, which was the very reason he was hired.....I thought.

its really unbelievable the power the PC crowd has in the media....

i don't think race had anything to do with it personally....Steve McNair is a classic example being a much better quarterback than McNabb -- its more of an east coast bias.......but.....what IF it was a factor? is it un-American to raise such a possibility? or is it un-American to censor such questioning of the media???

obviously he was railroaded out of there....very unfortunate we can't have someone on there that isn't just reading off prompts regardless his views.....

cant have jimmy the greek, rush limbaugh, dennis miller, or anyone who shoots from the hip anymore...just a bunch of talking robots

...yep. i'm going to post the entire freeze-rant because that's one of the best posts that I've seen here in quite a while...and let me assure you that it does not pain me in the least to attribute it to Dr. Freeze...even though his economic views are a lil' skewed. I think that this marriage thing was good for him.... :yup

...seriously, I couldn't have said it better myself, freeze...and attorneys don't say that too much. ;)

NEW YORK -- Conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh resigned from ESPN on Wednesday night, three days after his comments about Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb being overrated because the media wanted to see a black quarterback succeed.

Earlier Wednesday, Democratic presidential candidates Wesley Clark, Howard Dean and Rev. Al Sharpton called for the cable sports network to fire Limbaugh.

"My comments this past Sunday were directed at the media and were not racially motivated," Limbaugh said in a statement Wednesday night. "I offered an opinion. This opinion has caused discomfort to the crew, which I regret.

"I love NFL Sunday Countdown and do not want to be a distraction to the great work done by all who work on it.

"Therefore, I have decided to resign. I appreciate the opportunity to be a part of the show and wish all the best to those who make it happen."

George Bodenheimer, president of ESPN and ABC Sports, accepted the resignation.

"We regret the circumstances surrounding this," he said in a statement. "We believe that he took the appropriate action to resolve this matter expeditiously."

McNabb had said earlier Wednesday that he didn't mind criticism of his performance. He was upset that Limbaugh made his race an issue and said it was too late for an apology.

"It's somewhat shocking to hear that on national TV from him," McNabb said. "It's not something that I can sit here and say won't bother me."

Rush Limbaugh hasn't apologized for his comment. 'This is such a mountain out of a molehill.'(AP)
Limbaugh insisted earlier Wednesday he had "no racist intent whatsoever." In fact, he said he must have been right; otherwise, the comments would not have sparked such outrage.

Before McNabb led the Eagles to a 23-13 victory over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, Limbaugh said on ESPN's pregame show that he didn't think McNabb was as good as perceived from the start.

"I think what we've had here is a little social concern in the NFL. The media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well," Limbaugh said on Sunday NFL Countdown.

"There is a little hope invested in McNabb, and he got a lot of credit for the performance of this team that he didn't deserve. The defense carried this team," he said.

Limbaugh did not back down during his syndicated radio talk show Wednesday.

"All this has become the tempest that it is because I must have been right about something," Limbaugh said. "If I wasn't right, there wouldn't be this cacophony of outrage that has sprung up in the sports writer community."

The NFL disclaimed any responsibility from Limbaugh's remarks.

"ESPN knew what it was getting when they hired Rush Limbaugh," league vice president Joe Browne said. "ESPN selects its on-air talent, not the NFL."

Sharpton scheduled a news conference Thursday morning in front of ABC headquarters in New York. He said he would call for ESPN to fire Limbaugh and would call for a national boycott of the network this weekend if he isn't. ABC and ESPN are corporate cousins, both owned by Walt Disney Co.

"I'm going to call for ESPN to terminate Rush Limbaugh as we've seen other networks terminate people for racist remarks in the past," Sharpton said Wednesday night. "I'm shocked that we're at Wednesday and we have not seen an apology from Mr. Limbaugh. We cannot sit back in silence. That would be consent and we would have lost self-respect."

Chris Berman, who anchors the ESPN show, said he did not believe Limbaugh's tone or intent was malicious.

"As cut and dry as it seems in print, I didn't think so when it went by my ears," he said. "I probably should have looked to soften it. We're sorry we upset a guy who got off to a rough start."

McNabb said someone on the show should have taken on Limbaugh. Among the other panelists are former players Michael Irvin and Tom Jackson, both of whom are black.

"I'm not pointing at anyone but someone should have said it," McNabb said of the panelists, who also include former quarterback Steve Young. "I wouldn't have cared if it was the cameraman."

Limbaugh was scheduled to be in Philadelphia on Thursday to speak at a broadcast convention. McNabb said he wouldn't be welcome at the Eagles' practice.

"I really don't want to see him," McNabb said. "You can say you're sorry all you want, it doesn't matter. It's been said."

Clark, a retired Army general, called the remarks "hateful and ignorant speech." And Dean, a former Vermont governor, followed up with his own assessment -- "absurd and offensive."

The NAACP also condemned Limbaugh's remarks, calling them "bigoted and ignorant," and called for the network to fire Limbaugh or at least provide an opposing point of view on the show.

"It is appalling that ESPN has to go to this extent to try to increase viewership," NAACP President Kweisi Mfume said in a statement.

McNabb, who was runner-up for the league MVP award in 2000 and has led the Eagles to two straight NFC Championship Games, said he has no quarrel with Limbaugh's comment on his ability.

"I know I played badly the first two games," he said.

McNabb got off to the worst start of his career this season and was the NFL's lowest-rated starting quarterback after losses to Tampa Bay and New England. Still, the Eagles are 36-22 in games he has started, including 4-3 in the playoffs.

Limbaugh on Wednesday reiterated that he doesn't think McNabb is a bad player, just that he isn't as good as some media members think he is.

"This is such a mountain out of a molehill," he said. "There's no racism here, there's no racist intent whatsoever."

Limbaugh is the radio host of the politically focused Rush Limbaugh Show, which is syndicated in more than 650 markets worldwide.

He spent most of the 1990s assailing then-President Clinton and now spends Sunday mornings talking football, a job he called "the fulfillment of a dream."

Limbaugh helped increase the ratings for Sunday NFL Countdown. ESPN spokesman Dave Nagle said ratings are up 10 percent overall. Sunday's show drew its biggest audience in the regular season since 1996.

Seven black quarterbacks started games last weekend. Two other blacks who regularly start, Daunte Culpepper of Minnesota and Michael Vick of Atlanta, were out with injuries.

Asked about Limbaugh's comments, Eagles defensive end N.D. Kalu said: "He speaks well, he's well-read, but he's an idiot."

Two things. Rush said the media wants a good black qb????? Already has many, Culpepper, Mcnair, Vick and Donovan.....His whole point is just dumb....

As for it being racist..NO...Remember Gerry Cooney, the white heavyweight fighting for the title in the 80s? Sports Illustrated and the whole world (black, white, yellow, pink) called him the GREAT WHITE HOPE, Everyone talked about peole wanting a white heavyweight champ but no one was offended or fired or even thought twice about saying it...

So bottom line he made a stupid comment but it has been blown way out of proportion..oh lets be sensitive:moon:

Why does the media play up white quarterback Payton Manning so much? His numbers are pretty close to black quarterback McNab. It should be noted that the white Manning plays for Black head coach Tony Dungy but Manning was getting press when he played for a white coach too. Both black
McNab and white Manning have posted similar numbers during the past seasons. Blah, blah, blah, blah. Sorry but that is not the way we want our sports news delivered.
Rush's white a$$ wasn't fired he resigned. More publicity for the robot ditto heads leader.

AMAZING!

Boy, let's string ole racist Rush up. I don't find his comments offencive or racist. It amazes me that anytime a "white" person has a negitive or off the cuff comment on a "black" person the "RACE CARD" gets thrown out.

ESPN of all people should have backed Rush's comments, I believe they are the same company that has a "black" person (Stuart Scott- who I enjoy watching) tooling on "Whitey" all the time, I dont see anyone getting offended by his comments or asking for his head........Oh yeah double standard, I forgot....:nono:

I just saw the press conference with McNabb and he states I don't expect an apology or need one. Why is everybody ready to hang Rush when the guy he is talking about doesn't even seem pissed.

I can't wait to hear Jesse" the honorable adultery preacher with a child out of wedlock" want ESPN fined and boycotted, or Al Sharpten who will be ready to march on ESPN headquaters who had the big press conference about a young black girl who was ganged raped by white kids only to find out she was lying and probably knew it. Like I said I can't stand Rush but why is the PC media so hell bent on this guy when my Cubbies manager Dusty Baker talks about blacks being able to handle the heat better.

I guess that the PC world we live in now is that if you even use the world black you are considered a racist if you aren't black. OK now fire away some of the usual PC people here at madjacks. I would bet this thread gets about 100 more replies and 2000 more views where most will be saying hang Rush the Racist. I am Irish so every time some comedian makes a joke about all of US being drunks I am going to call the ACLU and file a discrimination case against them.

One more thing I am starting a protest of the movies that are out on video "White Men Can't Jump" and "The Great White Hype". Also I might throw in "Single White Female".

just cover

a white guy who will probably be labeled a racist for using the "B" word in my post

Can't say I agree with his comment of all media wanting it,but does not suprise the me black community and PC climbed on board, the world should be used to that by now. You can point to any fact about any race with no prob except blacks.
Hell I am surprised they even let em report on the murder-drug-ect convictions without someone claiming racism.
Its quite amusing there was recent big push to keep race off applications for jobs and colleges till someone figured out that would remove stats for entitlements, and tracking statistics for suits on discrimination, now their wanting to drop the issue.
Would nice if there was no race bias what so ever and let every one stand on their own merits--and if the shoe fits--where it.
No body owes any race anything. Everyone is equal in having 24 hours in each day--how they spend will determine their desitiny in life, regardless of color if you choose to quit school and hang out on conrners-sell drugs-commit crimes ect don't expect to be working for IBM and cry when your not--Oh I forgot "Its not your fault"

I feel sorry for Rev. Al Sharpton. Now his fat-ass has nothing to do but sit around and wait for "whitey" to slip up and say something "off-color" so he can get right in the middle of it.

I'm sure there's a buffet or 2 nearby. Phucker makes me sick!

This guy was never nothing postive for our country. He always was one sided and tryed to make trouble. I never here him compromise or see the other side as haveing some answers. He has tunnel vision.

I think that is a very accurate assesment of the situation, HOWEVER when your in the position that Rush was you have to be very careful with what you say and although I don't think he meant it as racist, it certainly can, and will be interperted that way. You just can't be THAT honest anymore, it was a mistake on his part if he was trying to keep that job. On the other hand if he could have gave a chit less about that job then he accomplished what he wanted to do and that is being Rush....

no, the comments weren't racist, however....

no, the comments weren't racist, however....

.....it could be interpreted as offensive. Certainly wasn't humorous at all.

ESPN got what was coming to them....increased ratings.....controversy.....egg on their face. NFL Sunday Countdown is supposed to be both informative and entertaining. But the idea of offering socio-political commentary on that show is just plain ridiculous. Rush Limbaugh had every right to hold his own opinion, but it was not the place to express what he said about McNabb on Countdown. Idiotic for sure. On his radio show, okay....but not on a football pre-game show.

Good observations regarding McNabb and Manning. If you believe either are overrated, then fine. No need to inject race into it. As for Donovan, while he doesn't have the passing stats that other starting QBs may have, you cannot ignore the intangibles that he possesses. Heck, Steve Young--Super Bowl QB--said it himself on Countdown.

An excellent athlete with a good agent can get endorsements and the PR. McNair is a better QB and team leader IMO, but he doesn't have the personality of a Donovan McNabb. McNabb's the more marketable one. Peyton at one time was the "interception king" but his "aw shucks country boy" image plays to the masses. So why does Donovan get the attention he does? Because on a Philly offense full on nobodies, he stands out. It's all about marketing yourself, fellas. Some have it, some don't, and some have to develop it.

The double standards are crap.........Next time Stuart Scott says Whitey I am going to lead a march on headquarters to get him fired! :D

The whole issue of it only being OK to bring up how the white man is holding down all other races just pisses me off! I was listening to a local talk radio show this morning and a caller was telling his story of how he was approached by a young black man about the subject of Reperations as he entered his local super-market. He told the young man that he saw nothing wrong with the Repaeration idea and that he felt it was not even necessary for the government to even send him any money that they should just send everyone home and be done with it! The young man was apaulled at this statement........he said Excuse me sir but what do you mean by your statement? The man then told him that he was reffering to himself as an American Indian and that he felt like he had been done wrongly by every race that graced this fine country and that it had been stolen from his people long before slavery was even an issue! After this the young man disgustedly walked off! It was no longer in his favor to address this man.........same for Al Sharpton and the media for this whole yarn ball.........It is over and Rush resigned, now get over it! Even a turd stops stinking if left alone for long enough!
