Does anyone else think of the homeless people when it is this cold out ????? -0 degrees with a wind chill of - 10 later.

I work in center city phila. and there isn't a day that goes by that I am not approached with a cup in my face for change or step over some one sleeping on top of a steamed vent.

Sometimes I give and sometimes I wonder if I am not feeding a addiction of drugs or alcohol???

My oldest son goes to school downtown also and he was giving the same guy change everyday for awhile, One day he didn't have any change and offered his sandwhich , The guy threw it at the ground and started yelling at him that he didn't want his sandwich. My kid hates the homeless people now , with good reason I GUESS!!!!!!!!!

How about when you see them holding a sign that reads "WILL WORK FOR FOOD" I always wondered if you said hop in the car I have work for you if they would do it!!!! or if that is just a gimick.?

at any rate I am sure my local news will report deaths today/ tonight of unidentified people due to the severe cold , makes me a little sad to think people are out there and also fills me with gratitude when I take the minute to think that could be me .

I always think about the homeless in this weather. I just got home from work...and I work outside at the airport...and lemme tell you, its freezing...but I know I have a warm bed to go home to. Too many ppl take things for granted....let them join the service, and sleep out in the field in this weather for a few days...see how important they feel all of a sudden....

"will work for food" -- Ive put a few of those folks to work. If I have the day off, I`ll ask them "what can ya do?!" They say "anything", so I tell him to hop in the car and Im putting you to work. So usually I have them cut the grass, wash my car, scrub teh shit out of the bathroom, move things around and organize shit in the garage, and have them cut the neighbors yard since he`s like 100 freakin years old. After I approve of his work...I feed him and give him $100. I tell him, "I dont care how you spend it...just dont get yourself killed" I dont know where these folks went wrong in life...but poverty is not something to laugh at. I get very pissed off when my friends pick on these type of ppl, when they have no clue what theyve been through. Im sure majority are crackheads...butttt, not all are like that....Ive given them clothes too..I have shitloads of warm weather clothes from the army...got a whole closet in fact...so I strip the badges and tags off, and give it to them...I wish I had hand warmers for them :( ... shit, I wish i had hand warmers for myself

show some love ;) :)

Theres a guy outside of DOE in the morning that I try to give $5 to when I can. One less beer for me on a weekend I can live with. But its only because hes not one of the mean aggresive guys your son ran into, hes always nice, thanks everyone, nice guy.

Local DC tv did an interesting piece on tv the other night on all the available beds in the shelters. The problem being that the shelters in DC, and I imagine in all cities, have strict rules about using them involving no booze, no sex, all sorts of things. Well the homeless people being as independent as they are, dont want to conform to the rules and would rather sleep outside. I just cant fathom sleeping in zero degree whether because you cant give up booze for a few nights. But there they were, empty beds in the shelters. So sad.

was going to the orioles game a few years ago.....never forget. on the way from parking to the gates, we see a nice black guy in a wheel chair with a sign asking for help. i put $5 in his can and moved right on by without breaking stride and giving it much thought.

after the game, on the way back to the car, we see the same wheelchair and a guy with the same sign but not the same guy. this time it was a white guy.

you really should think about letting these people into your house at any time. You are asking for big trouble there.

They have nothing to gain or lose by stealing anything you have.
Alot of them have mental problems and who knows what they might do or come back and do.

I would let them do outside work I think. I guarantee you that they would ask to use the bathroom, and then steal whatever pills, tootpaste, etc you have in there. If you don't want to deny them bathroom privilages I would not hire them for anything.

Eliz Smart's saga started out with her Mom feeding homeless people sandwhichs and letting them inside the house to do repair work. She felt sorry for them.

Now her daughter has to live with that for the rest of her life.

The world is crazy enough without just asking for trouble.

Usually the day before christmas eve, we go down to downtown chicago by lower Wacker and hand out bums clothes, food and blankets and pillows. a bunch of people from our church donate them and a group of like 15 of us go to hand them out. but im amazed by that some of them are so thankful and always are being so polite, but you get a few people wanting to know if they could just have money instead, to go by booze or drugs. its like what the hell, we are offering you a least clothing and food, and they always want something more.

and i agree with Scott on picking up bums to work for you. My dad is a police officer and he says usually its a big scam. usually its a few guys having a sign, just walking around saying they lost their job and stuff like that, when really they have a job and are just trying to get extra cash. he says he has arrested some bums that have had over $200 for the day from people giving them money. also, he was telling me a few years ago, some couple picked up a bum to help them with building a deck or something like that. the guy was super nice and all, but everytime he said he had to go to the bathroom, he would run in the bedroom and steal jewelry and than before he left he beat up the husband and raped the wife, and ended up stealing their car. the guy ended up crashing the car near downtown, and he was caught a week later. terrible story, but you have to be careful in who you are dealing with. just because their a bum, doesn't mean they are dangerous...

one night, while we were living in nyc, we were stopped at a red light. someone comes over to the car & starts washing the windows.since it is difficult to get my wallet from my back pocket, without getting out of the car, i reached into the ashtray &
gave him whatever change there was, which came to about $.75. i handed it to the guy & he refused it when he saw the amount. i then asked my wife when was the mininum amount that
homeless people take gone up?

when i moved to scottsdale, i noticed that there weren't any homeless people. one day, after spending some time at the mall, we were walking to our car, which was parked in the outside parking lot, we noticed that the cops were placing a couple into their car. i asked a person who was watching, he told me that the cops were taking a homeless couple to a shelter in phoenix. he went on to tell me that anytime cops see a homeless person, they take them to phoenix. i thought that was strange.

if we have any homeless people here, they're not too visible. I NEVER will give a beggar money however. I will donate to a reputable charity and where I go to church (we have many mission programs) where I know the money will go to help people, but I'm certainly not giving away money to a bum so he can go buy some Mad Dog 20/20. I'm not going to enable and reward this behavior.

People sleeping on the street are doing so by choice UNLESS they have some sort of Psych disorder. IMO, that's what is much more sad, the untreated mental paitents.

I remember that the wife had only been in the states for just over a year when we took a few days off to tour Washington D.C. This was 1987. After seeing the museums & monuments we got in line and took a tour of the Whitehouse. When we came out we walked around the park across the street-this was two weeks before X-Mas. It was filled w/homeless ppl and every grate had a blanket tied to it and as many ppl as could fit. Some homeless were sitting on park benches talking to themselves out loud. I really couldn't explain the situation to my wife as she didn't understand the extremes...White House to grocery carts.
Sad to say that I think Scott is 100% correct Hella.:(
P.S.- I used to wash my van about once a week@ a car wash near my work. No trouble in the summer, but as soon as it started getting cold you would be accosted for change as soon as you got out to get change or pay. Real popular spot as it was next to a liqour store and most were heading south for the winter.

then you should show them the gun right off the bat so
they know who they are dealing with.

Otherwise you may have to shoot a homeless person
one day.

I do what SixFive does...

I give at church or reputable charity (Red Cross).

True Story ~

Fall of 1967. NYC. Standing at Grand Central Station in my dress blues waiting to take the train back to New London, Conn. Bum approached me and asked if I could spare a quarter. I apologized and told him I was flat broke except for a train ticket back to Conn. He asked how much time I had before the train arrived. I said about an hour. He was wearing an overcoat. He reached in his pocket and gave me a $1.25. He said, "Don't try and give this back to me. Go get yourself two hamburgers and a coffee at the White Castle. You have time."

I don't think anything but the GREAT indoors will do much for any of the street people tonight . -5 degrees right now , wind chill expecting to feel like -27  Who cares why they are out there, they just are  and its very sad!

What I truelly do not understand is we, meaning america helps feed , house and medicate people in other countries. Why does poverty still exist here? Shouldn't we try to help our own first?????
