LONDON - New research suggests even 3-year-olds aren't getting enough exercise, raising concerns over their weight, future disease risk, psychological well-being, behavior and learning ability.

In the first study to rigorously track the movements of preschoolers, scientists found that the average 3-year-old is physically active for just 20 minutes a day, well short of the recommended hour-a-day for that age.

In The Lancet study published last month, scientists from the University of Glasgow in Scotland recruited 78 children. Each 3-year-old wore an "accelerometer," a matchbox-sized monitor clipped to the waistband, for a week.

The device, worn from the time the children woke up until they went to bed, gave minute-by-minute readings of the children's pattern of physical activity and the number of calories burned.

The toddlers were burning about 1,300 calories a day - less than the 1,500 calories recommended.

While the problem is one of an imbalance of calories eaten and burned up, experts believe the main reason is that children are not getting enough exercise.

"There are really only two possibilities: reduced activity or increased intake. None of the dietary assessment data indicate that children are eating more. Adolescents may be eating more, but young children are eating less," said the study's leader, John Reilly, a physiologist at the University of Glasgow.

"A 3-year-old 25 years ago was eating 25 percent more than a 3-year-old today," he said. "But physical activity levels have dropped quite dramatically over the last 15 or 20 years."

In the study, the children were spending 9 to 10 hours of their waking day hardly moving. "They may well have been doing a bit of fidgeting, they may have been speaking to their parents or among themselves, but they were just not moving enough to put up the number of calories burned beyond what it would be if they were just resting or sleeping," Reilly said.

Oh PUH-fvcking-leeeeeze. 20 minutes a day????? 9 to 10 hours of their waking day hardly moving ???? Are you kidding me???

It takes most parents 20 minutes just to chase down a 3 year old when you tell them it's time to get their night time bath. 20 minutes a day LMAO. Everytime I read this article, it makes me laugh more and more.

England, u.k.
I blame the in-balance of are young children today on American society. What with the shit junk food, oven french fries and hotdogs and hamburgers that are chucked down the throats of our young ones. Then theres the 3 hours of watching shit like the Simpsons. No wonder our three year olds only get 20 minutes of exercise aday. Thats the 20 minutes KotysDad says is chasing the kids to the bath and into bed.

Not much mistaking the truth here. Look at the state of obestery in America in the young now compared with 20 years ago. Its just that here in England we are 5 years behind you Americans.

With the absolute trash that is on TV, I'd be thrilled if my child stops on the Simpsons. 3/4 of that show is jokes kids won't even understand.

Doc many work two jobs. Then come home and cook meals. Then do laundry. On and On it goes. Now you want them to fine the same time as there kids to get off there asses. So give parents some credit. They all dont sit around waiting for hand outs.

So I guess you don't plan on having kids since you will be a Dr. and will be working all day and on call w/ no time for your kids?

Thats right Doc all ther fault. They have good jobs and all of a sudden there companies leave the country with them standing on the corner looking for another one. That company doesn't give a chit if they have kids or dreams. Then they find out were not growing any good jobs around these parts and they can stand in line for there hand out or work at wallmart. IBM is next up 15000 jobs next two years going going gone. ASD adding another 2000 going to china. Merck adding to there Ireland plant. And on it goes. Chit blame it on the parents. Well then wee should put the blame for our high health cost on all you over paid. Well your close to being a doc.

Just curious, but what appeals to you about Path...my perception is just staring at slides all day long.

What other parts of medicine are family-friendly, I believe i've heard derm was.

yeah...derm, radiology, any specialty once you put in 10 years -- which i dont want to do -- gotta sacrifice my "prime" in golf for that...

i love science....especially at its basic levels....that is what interests me most about path...yeah you can't see patients, but that isn't really a bad thing anymore especially with all else you have to deal with -- HMO's, lawyers, etc. etc.

Doc you have said in the past all these jobs are leaving because workers want to much pay. But it's ok if your over paid right.

no if you think i am overpaid, then naturally you should want my job and become a doctor....personally i thought they made a lot of $$ too and also were overpaid....that is why i became one for the most part....however i am wrong in some instances however i still like the fact that i will be making good $$....

as far as jobs are concerned....the problem is because people refuse to do some things....my grandpa picked grapes, worked in a mint factor, a post office, and hardware store to make ends meet...lived a good life....nowadays everyone wants a management position...well, thankfully we are getting more of those positions as the labor jobs are moved overseas.....BUT, i hear about all these people complaining "no jobs" and i see the classifieds FILLED with job ads....especially nurses....

now nursing is hard work -- no doubt about it -- but this is a great career and jobs are in HUGE demand....yet they do not get filled......and we have a job crisis? I don't get it....

something isn't adding up

hmmmmmmmmm....unquestionably a pro-capitalistic statement....which also alludes to a tinge of racism, methinks!!!

:)

and irony of ironies....relates to one of my papers....check it out....

The United States of America has long prided itself as a country that is known throughout the world as the land of the free. In fact, this rhetoric is reinforced every time the American national anthem is sung because the phrase ?the land of the free? resounds as the song reaches a crescendo. For several immigrants, however, expectations of gaining certain freedoms by moving to the country are never met. These newcomers
often face discrimination, repression, prejudice, and poverty; all of which are fundamentally opposite to the definition of the word ?freedom.? ...... Ironically, despite the fact that the majority of Americans are descendants of immigrants
themselves, the new immigrants are, nevertheless, treated poorly and consumed as a commodity, whose sole purpose is to help the country flourish. Furthermore, these individuals are also encouraged to relinquish their individuality and culture in order to
assimilate into a capitalistic American society.

My sister was a nurse in a psych ward and then in oncology for a number of years. Then she switched to pharm sales. Nurses aren't retained because for the most part they are overworked, underappreciated, and basically treated like shit. Of course this isn't every single nurse, but for the most part and my sister's experiences this was the case. Not to mention no holidays off and crappy vacations.

I wont go near the Nurse area for my wife is a RN in a specialty field. Pay is not wild but i would say close to fair. Funny thing is her schooling for what she does took 6 years. The two Doc's she works with are 8 and 9 years grads. She makes about 1/4 of what they do. But does 75% of what they do with patients. She does more then 75% of what they do in the education part of working with the patients. But women seem to get the short end of the stick many times. At least thats what they claim. Maybe there right. My wife loves what she does so much that she never complains. Even when fighting cancer her self she never felt sorry for herself or complained. I believe she is worth at least another 15%. But then the playing field might get to close to those Doc's.
For those of you who have not been around to many Docs. First they like the word god because many thing they are. Next they dont like to be questioned because they never are wrong. And they can prove that. Ask them.
But I like Doc's idea about those grape and apple pickers. Thats about where were headed. Burger flippers and walmart. Doc we need some real jobs. And for not enough nurses. Pay them the shortage would go away.

DJV you conveniently left out that your wife also assumes 0% of the risk involved in medicine. Ok, maybe not 0%, but compared to the Dr. very little. She pays 0% liability insurance, and in the end it's mostly the docs ass on the line, not hers. But I agree with the superiority complex. Things will never change, most of the med students I'm around have the God complex and they aren't even docs yet.
