SEC Bowl Games See Increase in Attendance, TV Ratings

Post-season football bowl games that included Southeastern Conference teams saw a cumulative increase in attendance and television ratings based on a comparison between 2002-03 and 2003-04.
In seven post-season football games with SEC teams this past season, attendance reached a cumulative total of 463,066, an average of 66,152 fans per game. That is a 7.65 percent increase over the 430,130 fans that attended the same games in 2002-03.

The same seven post-season games had a cumulative television rating of 41.12, an average of 5.87 rating points per game. That is a 26.2 percent increase over the 32.58 cumulative rating for the same seven games a year ago.

The largest percentage increase in attendance was the Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl, which had an attendance of 55,109 for Auburn's 28-14 win over Wisconsin. That is a 40.7 percent increase from the 2002 game featuring Arkansas and Minnesota.

The largest percentage increase in television ratings was the Nokia Sugar Bowl, which had a TV rating of 14.8 for LSU's 21-14 victory over Oklahoma in the Bowl Championship Series National Championship Game. That is a 60.5 percent increase over last year's Sugar Bowl which featured Georgia and Florida State.

Six of the seven SEC bowl games increased in total attendance and in television ratings.

Overall, 17 of the 27 college football post-season bowl games that were played in the last two seasons had an increase in attendance and in television ratings. The Fort Worth Bowl played its inaugural game this season.

What's the best way to judge which conference is the best in the nation?
Is it the quality of the competition from top to bottom in a league? Year-in and year-out, the Southeastern Conference is one of the most competitive conferences in the country. In 2003, 19 SEC intra-conference games were decided by 10-points-or-less. More games were decided by 10-points-or-less in the SEC than were decided by 20 points-or-more.

The average margin of an SEC intra-conference game was 16.53 points per contest, fifth in the nation and second among BCS conferences.

Is it how a conference fares against non-conference competition? The SEC's 37-19 non-conference record in 2003 was the second best in the nation and only the ACC matched the SEC's five bowl wins last season.

Last season, the SEC had five victories against non-conference teams ranked in the final wire service polls (#3 Oklahoma, #5 Miami, Fla., #12 Texas, #18 Purdue, #22 Clemson), with all victories either taking place on a neutral field or on the opponents' home turf.

This season, the SEC had five teams ranked in the final Top 25, matching the Big Ten as the most in the nation. In the last seven seasons, the SEC has had 36 teams ranked in the final Associated Press poll, more than any other conference in the nation.

Is it competing for the national championship? LSU won the national championship in 2003 with a 13-1 record and a 21-14 victory over Oklahoma in the Nokia Sugar Bowl. It was the SEC's 15th national championship and the league's fourth national title since league expansion in 1992.

In fact, the SEC's four national crowns since 1992 have been won by four different teams - Alabama (1992), Florida (1996), Tennessee (1998) and LSU (2003). No other conference has had as many as two different teams win national championships since 1992.

Is it playing in front of capacity crowds on fun-filled Saturdays with a tradition that is unparalleled? The SEC, for the 23rd straight season, recorded the largest total attendance figures in the nation with more than 6.1 million fans attending games at SEC stadiums in 2003. SEC stadiums were filled to an NCAA-high 97.1 percent last season. Seven SEC teams were in the top 13 in the nation in average and total attendance.

Is it being the nation's most watched college football conference? The SEC is the only conference in the nation to have a nationally-network televised game each week during the season with its CBS Sports affiliation. The SEC is also showcased on most Saturday nights on ESPN and ESPN2 and Jefferson-Pilot Sports brings the SEC into the homes of SEC fans each weekend.

Is it seeing the most talented student-athletes perform each week during the season? In 2003, 13 SEC players earned first-team All-America mention. The SEC also had the winner of the Maxwell National Player of the Year Award and the Johnny Unitas Award for the nation's top quarterback (Ole Miss' Eli Manning) and the Lou Groza Award for the nation's top placekicker (Ole Miss' Jonathan Nichols). Ten other SEC student-athletes were finalists for eight other awards.

Is the best way to judge a conference the quality of achievement both on the field and in the classroom? Last season, for the second year in a row, the SEC had three of the six student-athletes given designation as National Football Foundation Scholar-Athletes - Auburn's Dontarrious Thomas, LSU's Rodney Reed and Eli Manning of Ole Miss.

Reed also earned first-team CoSIDA Academic All-America mention and four other SEC student-athletes - LSU's Matt Mauck, Arkansas' Jerry Reith, Robert Wallis of Miss. State and Auburn's Thomas were second-team Academic All-Americans.

In 2003, 255 football student-athletes earned SEC Academic Honor Roll status, maintaining a 3.0 grade point average for the previous academic year or during his academic career.

For the 23rd straight season, the SEC recorded the largest total attendance figure of any conference in the nation, according to the NCAA. In 2003, a total of 6,146,890 fans attended 83 home games, an average of 74,059, also tops in the nation. SEC stadiums were filled to 97.0 percent of capacity for each home game in 2003, also best in the nation. Below is a look at how the SEC fared against other conferences:

SEC HAS THREE NATIONAL SCHOLAR-ATHLETES FOR SECOND STRAIGHT YEAR

For the second straight year, the Southeastern Conference has had three of its football student-athletes named to the National Scholar-Athlete Class of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame. This year, the organization's list includes only eight student-athletes from NCAA Division I-A.

From the SEC, the list includes Ole Miss senior quarterback Eli Manning (Marketing), LSU senior offensive tackle Rodney Reed (Accounting) and Auburn senior linebacker Dontarrious Thomas (Management).

Reed was also named first-team CoSIDA Academic All-America for 2003.

Last year, the SEC had three of six NFF Scholar-Athletes - Vanderbilt linebacker Hunter Hillenmeyer, LSU linebacker Bradie James and Georgia offensive tackle Jon Stinchcomb.

To be eligible for a NFF/CHOF postgraduate fellowship, the nominee must be a senior or graduate student in his final year of eligibility, have a grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, have shown academic application and performance, have outstanding football ability as a first-team player, and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship.




SEC - ONE OF THE MOST COMPETITIVE CONFERENCES IN THE NATION

SEC vs. SEC games has traditionally been among the most competitive in the nation. After 15 weeks of this season, 49 SEC vs. SEC games have an average scoring margin of 16.33 points per contest. 38.8 percent of the SEC's games (19-of-49) have been decided by ten-points-or-less. Below is a chart showing how the SEC fares with other Division I-A conferences in average scoring margin for inter-conference matchups (Percentage of conference games decided by 10 points or less in parenthesis):

SEC HAS NCAA-HIGH FIVE BOWL VICTORIES

The SEC and the Atlantic Coast Conference each won five bowl games during the 2003-04 college football post-season bowl season, earning the most wins among NCAA Division I-A conferences.

The SEC was 5-2 in its seven games while the ACC won five of its six bowl games.

SEC HAS NCAA-HIGH FIVE TEAMS RANKED IN FINAL POLLS

LSU's number one national ranking in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll leads a roster of five SEC teams ranked in the final 2003 college football rankings.

The Tigers are also ranked number two in the final Associated Press poll.

The SEC and the Big Ten each had five teams listed in the final rankings. The Big 12 had four teams while the ACC had three and the Pac-10 and the Mid-American had two teams each.

Georgia is ranked sixth in the coaches' poll and seventh in the AP poll, while Ole Miss is 14th in the coaches' poll and 13th in the AP poll.

Tennessee comes in at 16th in the coaches' poll and 15th in the AP poll and Florida rounds out the SEC teams, ranked 25th in the coaches' poll and 24th in the AP poll.

Since conference expansion in 2002, the SEC has had 59 teams ranked in the final USA Today/ESPN Coaches and AP polls, an average of almost five teams per season.

During the last seven seasons, the Southeastern Conference has sent 53 teams to post-season bowl games, the most of any conference in the nation. Since 1997, the SEC is 30-23 in bowl games. Eleven of the SEC's 12 teams have been to post-season bowls in the last seven seasons.

MANNING, SABAN, NICHOLS WIN NATIONAL AWARDS

LSU head coach Nick Saban and the Ole Miss duo of QB Eli Manning and PK Jonathan Nichols won post-season national honors in 2003.

Saban, who directed the Tigers to its first national championship since 1958, was named the National Coach of the Year by the Associated Press and won the FWAA/Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award as well as the Bear Bryant National Coach of the Year Award.

Saban became the first SEC coach to win national coach of the year honors since 1998 when Tennessee's Phillip Fulmer was named the FWAA/Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year.

Manning was named the National Player of the Year by Maxwell Football Club and also earned the Johnny Unitas Award, given by the Frank Camp Chapter of the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Educational Foundation in Louisville, Ky, to the nation's top senior quarterback.

In 2003, Manning directed the Rebels to a 10-3 record, completing 275 of 441 passes for 3,600 yards with 29 TDs and 10 interceptions. During his career, Manning broke or tied 45 school, SEC and NCAA records.

Nichols was named the winner of the Lou Groza Award, given by the Palm Beach (Fla.) Sports Commission to the nation's top placekicker.

In 2003, Nichols led the SEC in field goal percentage, hitting 25 of 29 for an 86.2 percent success rate. He also was perfect in point-after-touchdowns, connecting on all 49 attempts. His 124 points scored was second in the SEC.




SEC TOPS NATION IN BOWL APPEARANCES

The schools that currently comprise the SEC have appeared in 331 bowls (including 2003-4). That is by far the most of any conference in the nation. Below is a look at how the various conferences have fared in bowl games in its history (using current conference alignments):

I never really gave it a thought as to how many organizations name All-American's for football - which one is the most widely recognized? Which team goes to the White House (if they even do that anymore, I have no clue to be honest). I'd assume it's the AP team but who the hell knows anymore.

Just curious.

That is the problem. You are just looking at the end result. Which is many SEC teams ranked in the top 25. Why not be intellignent and look into why so many SEC teams are ranked in the top 25. In addition, look at all the info I have put in front of you. SEC not being dominant against BCS competition. SEC having losing record against the Pac 10. SEC playing piss poor OOC schedules and giving them automatic 3-4 wins every year. SEC being a top heavy conference with 4-5 doormats. Those are all factors of why the SEC has so many teams ranked in the top 25.

I DO NOT HAVE A PROBLEM WITH SEC TEAMS BEING RANKED IN THE TOP 25. THAT IS FINE WITH ME. I HAVE THE PROBLEM WHEN PEOPLE SAY THE SEC IS SUCH A DOMINANT CONFERENCE WHEN THE REALITY IS THEY ARE NO BETTER THAN THE PAC 10. I RESPECT BOTH CONFERENCES. BOTH CONFERENCES HAVE DIFFERENT WAYS OF PLAYING AND SCHEDULING FOOTBALL. PAC 10 CLEARLY IS A BETTER CONFERENCE TOP TO BOTTOM AND CLEARLY PLAYS A TOUGHER OOC SCHEDULE. SEC IS CLEARLY TOP HEAVY BUT MIGHT HAVE MORE DESERVING ELITE TEAMS.

GET IT? Why is this so shocking to all of you? I do not understand. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND BECAUSE NONE OF YOU CAN EXPLAIN WHY.

Again Scott, I think you are putting too much weight behind your SEC myth. You act as though maybe only 2-3 should be ranked. I thought we were clear on this issue? I told you I would respect your SEC Myth, but not to that extreme. If we dropped all 9 of the SEC teams rankings that year by 5 spots (a modest amount), how many would still be ranked? Probably about 7-8. Still a majority of the conference. The polesters are not as naive as you think, Scott. They are not that stupid when it comes to judging talent.

obviously he is just jealous that the SEC is a very dominant conference, and when you go to a Pac-10 website, they are so jealous that LSU won the Sugar Bowl, they have to put incorrect facts that USC won the Sugar Bowl that year......

If we dropped all 9 of the SEC teams rankings that year by 5 spots (a modest amount), how many would still be ranked? Probably about 7-8. Still a majority of the conference.

Last season in the coaches poll, SEC had 5 teams ranked in the top 25. If we dropped each team 5 spots, like you suggested, there would be 4 teams ranked in the top 25.

In all honesty I do not know how I would rank the SEC teams. I would penalize them somewhat with their poor OOC scheduling but its really tough to do. I could really care less who is or not ranked in the top 25. My point is I think it is wrong for someone to assume a team in the SEC is tougher than a Pac 10 team only because they are from the SEC. I also think it is wrong to assume the SEC is stronger conference.

The polesters are not as naive as you think, Scott. They are not that stupid when it comes to judging talent.

Yes and No. Pollsters look at wins. SEC teams have plenty of wins because of the poor OOC opponent they face. Think about it. It is a very simple equation. Do I have a problem with it? Not really. My problem is fans who are naive and think the SEC is dominant becuase of that. It simply is not true.

When are you going to get this through your thick skull. The SEC doesn't need to schedule strong OOC games when you have that tough conference schedule to go through. Is it any fluke that the Pac 10 tries to schedule strong OOC games? Don't give me this bullshit that they all want to play the toughest teams because that is bullshit.

Next you will sit here & brag how tough USC's ooc schedule was last year when they had world beaters in Hawaii, BYU, ND etc :rolleyes:

I am not saying SEC is WRONG for scheduling bad OOC opponents. I am just claiming you cannot say it is a dominant conference. The #'s support my claim.

WHERE IS YOUR INFO? COUNTER ARGUE MY POINTS? Your telling me the SEC is so tough, tell me why. Don't just say it, that is meaningless.

WHY is the SEC not dominant against BCS competition?

WHY does the SEC have a losing record against the Pac 10?

WHY does the SEC play piss poor OOC schedule? Because it gives them automatic 3-4 wins every year.

WHY is the SEC such a top heavy conference?

These are all factors of why the SEC has so many teams ranked in the top 25.

REMEMBER, i think the SEC is a premier conference. But why can't you explain and answer all the questions above. ALL THE #'s SUPPORT MY CLAIM. EXPLAIN WHY??????

Like it or not, the SEC conference is no better than the Pac 10. Both conferences have different styles on how they do things. If the Pac 10 played weak OOC schedules and most of the teams start the year with 3-4 wins there would be hell of a lot more Pac 10 teams ranked. But you also hve to remember the Pac 10 is not top heavy but tough from top to bottom. Meaning there are no doormats and upsets happen all the time. Try handicapping the Pac 10.

***This is not just about last year but on average.

PAC 10's Combined OOC Opponents Record---- 308 - 264 .539

SEC's Combined OOC Opponents Record---- 398 - 309 .562



Alabama's OOC Teams record----47-17 WOW, no team comes close to that, but maybe Tennessee 41-23 or Florida 40-22

Perfect response and answer to all of Scotts crap about OOC strength; I am sure Scott is in his dormroom right now trying to counteract. By the way Scott says he's 23 and still in college; he might want to think about hitting the books instead of sucking on Pete Carrolls nuts then he might graduate. :eek: :eek:

This data has very little to with the debate between Pac 10 and SEC. And how strong of a conference the SEC is. Taking last season as your sample is not statistically correct. Too small of a sample.

By the way, I ranked the SEC as the #2 conference last year, ahead of the Pac 10 who I ranked #3. Even though some of my data from last year support the Pac 10 ahead of the SEC. ACC was the clear cut #1.

its basically all of the teams combined OOC record....

for example.......

ALABAMA was 3-2 vs OOC teams....

the teams they faced....

South Flordia (7-4)
Oklahoma (12-2)
Northern Ill (10-2)
Southen Miss (9-4)
Hawaii (9-5)

if you combine the teams record they were 47-17........not to shabby....they aren't the greatest of teams, but all are above .500
