What's going on with these gas prices, I just fueled up today and it cost me nearly thirty bones to fill up. I was planning to go south this summer on a vacation but if these gas prices hold up it's going to be quite expensive. When will the govt release some of this gas from the reserve?

I read somewhere yesterday that if the Oil Cartel was disbanded
oil would drop under 10 dollars a barrel and we would be
paying a buck a gallon.

The Cartel sets prices and they all stick to it. I think we call
that a monopoly.

Its all about the money.

time to start drilling in Alaska...need to start firing people in the environmental office

Hear Hear!! I love the environment as much as anybody, and I'm outdoors all the time, but, I can see a real need for this too (not sure about firing people but the need to have our own resources tapped). This drilling can be done environmentally safe and should be started asap.

Maybe we could start getting more from Canada as well?? How much do we get from Canada every year, they drill the heck out of it? Does anybody have the breakdown of where our oil actually comes from?

SixFive,

In 2001 the total estimated world production of oil was 76.8 million barrels per day. The total estimated usage by the United States in '01 was 19.6 million b/d. Of that usage 10.6 million
b/d was imported (54%). Canada, Saudi Arabia, and Venezuela,
are the top three exporters to the US.
Of our total petrol imports...48% was from the western hemisphere and 30% from the Persian Gulf ( 18% Saudi, 9% Iraq,
and 3% Kuwait). The remainder of the oil imports were from places like Nigeria, Norway, and the UK.

CANADA 1.79 million b/d
SAUDI 1.66 million b/d
VENEZ 1.54 million b/d
MEXICO 1.42 million b/d

Ctownguy get a grip and take a hooked on phonics course to get a better reading comprehension ability. If you would of read the thread with better reading comprehension then you would see that yes I am pissed about the gas prices and I am still oppossed to invading any country for oil, if you support this then when someone invades Saudi for their oil we have no right to bitch. The main point is that we must stop our reliance on fossil fuels and begin to find alternative sources, there are many alternative sources that this administration and the Clinton administration (to a lesser extent) has failed to fully fund resources for. The Bush administration will never go for alot of research funds for alternative sources since they are in the pockets of the oil industry as will be shown once Cheney's meetings on energy are released. Only you Ctownguy in your myopic way would turn a thread about gas prices into a partisan commentary but that is typical of most of the jack offs that cannot see the middle both on the religious wacko right and the tragic folks whom are on the complete left.

Someone wanted a breakdown on where our oil comes from and it was in yesterdays paper off the top of my head I recall it went like this: 1. Saudi Arabia, 2. Iran, 3. UAE, 4) Kuwait and 5) Nigeria
Russia has become a major player in the oil business as they are drilling the shit out of the Caspian Sea but much of their oil is used internally but they have begun to export some recently.

This drill in Alaska is such.a joke. Were saved there drilling in Alaska. :D :D Chit less then 3% of what we would use would come from those new holes. Thats if we can make sure it all comes here and not half to Asia as it does right now. And the good news is if they start to go after it tomorrow. The first to reach the lower 48 states will be 4 to 6 years.
We can stop filling the reserve holding centers for a couble of months and get relief now. Yes it will only be worth 3 to 5 cents a gallon if we do that. But it starts now. And thats the same 3 to 5 cents a gallon relief you will get for all the new holes in Alaska. and you can wait 4 to 6 years for it.
Are all you guys here saying the greatest nation on this earth cant come up with a better plan. Or alternative solutions. Or are we going to sit back and let the Japines and China do it. Alaska drilling is side show.
Greed And the oil men running the white house are not a shamed to admitt it.

Well ... here's a partial list of the reasons for high gas prices.

There is a higher demand for gas in the US. American consumers are using more gas this year than they have in many previous years, even with the high prices.

Environmental regulations lower the supply base of gasoline available to consumers. Oil refineries have to switch production at this time of year to boutique gas blends for specific geographical regions. This means that if there is a shortage driving prices up in one region supplies can't be shipped in from another region to meet demand ... wrong blend.

We have about one-half the number of oil refineries in the United States that we had 30 years ago. The last time a new refinery opened for business was in 1976.

There is an unexpected high demand for petroleum in China. Some think that China may be buying huge supplies to build a strategic reserve.

Saudi Arabia has cut production. There is speculation that Saudi Arabia is recognizing that its reserves of crude oil are running out. Saudi production may never again reach previous highs.

The gas prices we face right now are not record high prices. In the early 1980s a gallon of gasoline cost about $2.90. That's adjusted for inflation, of course, but so is your income.

Damn, you fillin' up at the Full Service, All Nude station? Haven't seen those prices at all, all the way from Miami up to Coral Springs. About $0.20 cheaper at least. Filled up the misses' [car]with $1.89 yesterday (premium), and my car with $1.76 (cheap regular) today.

Must be up on South Beach, where anything is more expensive.

STILL, prices are ridiculous, WTF is this government waiting for? Soon we'll think that $1.60 is cheap :nono:

I paid 1.67 a gallon yesterday in Dallas. My cousin lives between LA and San Diego, and I talked to him today on the phone and he said it was 2.31 there. Insane. I just don't know enough about the gas/oil industry to make much of a comment other than saying that I really, really hope it goes down.
