been out of golf since highschool (1973 ugh!)

recently got back into it (well i did about 7 years ago for about 20 rounds then stopped again until now) and gonna need a new set. hell, the ones i have i bought used in 1971

don't laugh, i might still be able to beat your ass with this set :D

anyway, seriously, what should i look into? should i get 'custom' because i'm 6'4" or will the sticks off the shelf do me okay and, if so, what brands, shafts, club heads, etc should i check out.

should i get my club speed measured? should i just go to a pro shop and take their suggestions?

thanks for the help.

Jack, cant recommend enough going to a golf shop that has a launch monitor and do a session there. The number of things they measure is mindboggling. Not only clubspeed and swingrate (for things like what kind of shaft flex), but they also measure things like angle of swing (to provide the right offset on the clubs) or your setup position (to provide the right lie angle). I bought a new set this year after spending a couple hours in one and just shot 81 this morning, which was damn good for me considering it was my first round of the year.

I can recommend a great shop in Northern Virginia, have always gotten great service there, but I know you are way up in MD. They can still give you off the shelf clubs (ie - they arent custom making a set for you) - but the measurements they take allow them to tweak them a great deal to really help you.

you're pretty close, IE. lmao

pretty close.

i'd never get rid of my old PW no matter what. that damn club is amazing. they don't make 'em like that anymore ;)

thanks ace. i think i'll do some serious research and check out one of the golf speciality stores around here and see what they say.

1st round back tuesday, i shot 86.

2nd round back on wednesday, shot 85.

so, there's still some potential there.

............i guess until i start thinking about things again and start picking up some old habits.

Golf Galaxy, which should be in your area, is a great place to get fitted.

They have you swing for speed, measure the bottom of your club for angle and size you up. I just went last week and waiting for my set of MacGregors to arrive. They claim that you won't find a cheaper price or they will match it. I am pretty sure GG is in the Maryland area.

when i got back into golf 7 years ago, that's the club i joined. i was playing it in the high 80's regularly. only one time did i break 40 on 9 (the back 9). that course isn't even fun to play. way too hard.

i doubt tiger could par it ;)

Golf Digest recently did a "consumer reports" on all sorts of golf equipment, if you can't find it on the shelves, let me know, my brother-in-law is borrowing it.

Just get some Wilson Pro Staff Senior irons, a driver, 3 wood, 5 wood, 7 wood, and 9 wood, and hit the 80 compression Shark ball. That should be a good set-up for you! :tongue

definitely have the clubs fitted.....and try a few sets before picking one, pick what feels right...
New Nike Slingshots have received good reviews and were Golf Digest's iron of the year...any Callaway should feel good (I prefer the Steelheads)...and you can't go wrong with Ping

if you still have a decent swing speed, stick with steel and save a couple hundred :)

I went with the Slingshot steels and am very happy with them. They are extremely easy to hit a nice high ball with, but that was also tough today because when it gets windy and you are hitting an iron the gets the ball up quick, its tough to control at some times.

Jack are you up near Whiskey Creek? Played up there a couple times last summer, but not sure how far it is up your way.

Jack, I have been on staff with Ping for the last 3 years, and definitely have to recommend them. At least for the irons. There custom fitting system is second to none. Just about any pro shop that carries Ping should be able to fit you correctly. Hope that helps. Shoot me an email if you want, I can probably help you out with a better price. Let me know.

Speaking of golf MJ.

I just today ordered a new set of custom made irons at gigagolf.com.

Real nice site and they have a 30 day money back offer. You can take them out and try them out. Free shipping with orders over 150 bucks

Being your tall u can get the shaft lengthin by up to 1 1/2 inches and the lie adjusted by 3 degrees. They show you all the numbers you need to calculate your club specs.

But going to a place and getting fitted should be a must.

If you have been playing with a standard set and go to a custom set you won't believe the difference. I have a long inseam and I played with a standard set for years. One thing that struck me when I did it was. The guy told me, how can you hit a golf ball if your hands are below your knees? My swing was lifting my body. When I was able to stand more straight up? What a difference that made! Dropped a good 4 strokes off my game.

Good luck in your search

Grip it and rip it!! :D

game on!

Don't skimp on the name, it does make a difference. Custom fitted clubs help after the club speed measurement and swing analysis. And ask around at any local golf clubs or driving ranges on club recommendations. It might be hard where you are at but I know around here, you can always find someone that's buying the latest and greatest so let them lose their money. If not, see if the golf store you visit has any demos to let you get a feel for the clubs. Hope this helps. For what it's worth, my bag contains:

Callaway C4 driver - I'm one of the few who like this club
Callaway Big Bertha Hawkeye fairway woods - love them
Dunlop irons - my next on list for replacement
Callaway Hawkeye VFT lob and sand wedges
Odyssey Two Ball putter - everyone loves it when they try it, I tried at least 30 putters before I bought it

Jack If your just now getting back I would 1st find good pro and take lesson on basics if nothing else. Grip-stance setup ect.
When you get basics in sync your posture ect will prob be a little different -Then get fitted for the clubs.

Red, how do you like the Callaway wedges? That is next on my list of things to get is a wedge set. Golf is a funny thing, most guys will find a brand they love and stay pretty loyal to it over the years. As for whats in my bag:

TaylorMade 580xd Driver, 3, 5W - took the 3 iron out of my bag last summer, made a huge, huge difference trying to hit an iron I couldnt hit even as a decent golfer. Even thinking of adding a utility club in place of the 4 iron. Absolutely kill the driver, but have always loved and played TM woods.

Nike Sligshots - only two rounds on them, but very happy so far.

ViperBite wedges - decent set, but they spin way too much for me. I used to like it when I first got them, but as I learned to hit down on the ball and have the swing impart the spin, I couldnt control this club anymore.

Carbite mallet putter - only club in my bag besides my driver I would never trade or give up. Sweetest putter I have ever hit.

NikeOne ball - decent, but I will usually buy whats on sale that spring.

So anyway, I am definitely looking for new wedge ideas, I have heard good things about the Titlest Vokey and Callaways.

Acehistr8 - I love my Callaway wedges, esp. the sand wedge. I have heard good things about the Titleist wedges and also about Cleveland wedges. They are both quite popular around the various (over 30) courses in my area. I probably would have a Titleist if I hadn't gone with the Callaway. About the 3 iron, that might be a good move for you to go with a utility club. I had a friend go a 7 wood instead of his longer iron, and it really improved is game. I see a lot of people going for a wood, instead of a long iron, because they feel better control for the distance they want. There are exceptions, though, since I also have a friend that hits the 1 iron out of his bag.
