it's been YEARS since i bought Vodka at a liquor store. i'm usually a beer drinker but will have mixed drinks at bars and parties occasionally.

anyway, today i decided that i would have a few vodka and cranberry's on the deck this evening, so i run out for my vodka. sheese! what a selection and what a PRICE!

since i was mixing and not drinking straight i opted for the $13 smiernoff (sp) instead of the $30 chit.

what's the deal?

oh, i wound up getting some AMD to mix it with and it's better than redbull, loophole ;)

Since you are mixing you made a good choice. Give Stoli a shot, it is good straight or mixed.

If you are having Martinis though for my money it has to be Kettle one or the Goose.

Absolut is the one of the worst imo

Back home the prices ranged from Siberian Ice (8.79 for 1.75 liter) to Grey Goose (usually around 54.99 per 1.75 depending on the place). I usually just drink the cheapest stuff if I'm just chilling at home with a couple friends, watching games or something. You really can tell a difference, but I figure once you get a few in you, they all taste the same. :)

The exception to that is, like TS said, martinis. With those, I will usually use Grey Goose or Belvedere.

Vodka

I used to drink Vodka tonics and if you drink them for a little while you can really tell the difference. Smirnoff is a good Vodka to mix with, that being said its not top shelf but not bad either. My favorite was always absolut, probably because it tasted the best out of what I could afford when I was in college. Stoli was pretty damn good too, but IMO I liked absolut better. Belvedere is by far the best of them all, my personal favorite if I'm not paying for it. Grey Goose is very good too. Can't go wrong the Smiornoff/Absolut/Stoli way though. Vodka Red Bulls are great whats that AMD stuff Jack?

sorry, it's KMX. i get confused with all these damn energy drinks out now. i think AMD is one :D

quick story...

when i was in curacao, i asked the bartender for a red bull vodka. he said they don't have. at a different bar at the same hilton that night i asked for a red bull vodka and she said they didn't have. the next day i was sitting at the first bar where i asked and i saw a bed bull display and machine. wtf?? so i asked THIS guy for a red bull vodka and he said he didn't have. so i pointed to the machine and he said "OHHHHHH.....YES!, we have"

he goes over and puts ice in a tall glass (14 oz or so) then FILLS it with vodka and brings me a can of red bull on the side. $2.25 :D nice place! :D

For what it is worth...my econ teacher used Vodka's as an example in class once and I think it checks out.

Schmirnoff wanted to get into the market of the "bottom tier" vodka's but it ended up being more cost effective to just put the same exact product in a different bottle then to come up with a whole new production line using more workers and different cheaper ingredients. Popov Vodka was born. After hearing this my buddies and I had to taste test them both and honestly couldn't tell the difference (probably after a few "tests" you could have gave us just about anything and we couldn't have told the difference). Anyway, if the rumor is true Popov is a great alternative for very cheap, about 11 bucks for a handle.

Blackman...LOL. Popov...great stuff..

But seriously...Vodka is distilled, and thus a purer vodka is formed. Something like Popov...Poland springs vodka, etc, not distilled very much....Therefore, drink too much, get big hangover. Something like an Absolut is more refined. I like Grey Goose....however, vodka enthusiasts insist that this should only be served Straight up, or a little tonic...I do like mine w/cranberry, so I'll usually stick w/absolut. Belvy/cranberry is a deadly drink! Beware! You really want to up it, get the top shelf stuff and get the fresh cranberry juice...usually found in produce depts in supermarkets....giddy up!

May I suggest Absolut Red (100 proof) for mixers. This is not for the higher alcohol intake but there is a more pure taste to red than the blue label. The blue leaves a discernable aftertaste in my opinion...the red is crisp to me.

For straight up or martinis, gotta go with the Goose.

Do not drink Popov.

Only those who think Mad Dog 20/20 is a fine wine would think Popov is an acceptable vodka to drink.

Being a vodka drinker I can not drink the cheap stuff YUK!!!!!!!

My 3 top choices would have to be

kettle one - nice and smooth especially if mixed with cranberry :D thats my drink.

PRAVADA - same as kettle , a bit more expensive, but the bottle is prettier :D

and last but not least, I swear if your looking to get cooked up tonight do the BELVEDERE thing every time I drink that stuff no matter what I CAN'T SEE STRAIGHT at the end of the night!!!!!!!!!!

BTW- they sell all 3 variety's in that hillbilly gas station 10 miles from your house LOL :D

Tara:

I tried to e-mail you but it came back. Send me your e-mail address. My cocktail of choice is Al's scotch. Aged for 2-3 weeks in rusted metal gas cans in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. Simply robust with a hint of hickory.

I think she got disoriented when she checked out of the hotel right across from that gas station/liquor store/town square within an hour of checking in because there was too much dust on the dresser, or something. Everything seemed further away to her because she ended up at some dive 20 miles away.

Always go "top shelf" with your vodka;) You be glad the next morning.

Absolute Citron is my choice.

You can put it in your freezer and knock down a couple straight or mix as you like. It's awesome ice-cold.
