dogs, can't believe you think the clinton years were comparable to watergate, you lived through that history as i did. i think the number was forty gov't officials indicted, most went to prison. the only reason the president wasn't impeached, indicted and sent to prison was that he was immediaately pardoned by his successor as soon as he resigned. here's a link that should refresh you recollection. http://watergate.info/

andrew johnson's administration was nothing but crooks. and the teapot dome prosecutions went on for the better part of the next decade. here's a link on that.

http://academic.brooklyn.cuny.edu/history/johnson/teapotdome.htm

you'd be surprised if clinton isn't first in pardons? would you be surprised if he's twentieth? his numbers were below average. check it out:

my point is, that "record set" blurb makes it sound like something compiled by guinness, when, in fact, it is a political editorial creation that contains a good deal of distortion, if not pure misstatement. if you created the category of "most felon presidents pardoned," the leader of that category would be gerald ford. do i think that designation somehow casts aspirsion on ford? no, i think the category parameters are arbitrary and capricous, and of no significant statistical value. that's what i meant by political hyperbole.

really, i'm mostly politically neutral, excepting local politics that affect what i do. i've found that politics and truth just don't go hand in hand, so i refer to leave politics alone for the most part.

btw dogs, note that cal coolidge (1545), the president that followed warren harding's teapot dome administration, and u.s. grant (1332), the president that followed andrew johnson, are fourth and sixth on the pardon list. coincidence? i think not.

Loophole

You use the phrase 'arbitrary and capricious'.....are you by chance a tax attorney or tax accountant (cpa)?? Sure remember seeing those buzz words in lots of tax briefs. Just curious.

auspice, i am a criminal defense attorney; tax law is anathema to me. "arbitrary and capricious" are legal buzz words used to describe just about any standard that is without reasonable parameters, but is instead based upon whim or bias.

dtb, you did get me reading on presidenial pardons, which has been interesting to say the least. here's a link on notable presidential pardons:

http://jurist.law.pitt.edu/pardons6.htm

it appears that, next to the nixon pardon, the most controversial pardons were given by dubyah's daddy:

http://www.nytimes.com/learning/aol/onthisday/991224onthisday_big.html

all in all, it seems clinton was a relatively minor player in the realm of presidential pardons.

i was disappointed to see that the link on benton becker's lecture on the nixon pardon no longer works. becker's biggest claim to fame was that he was gerald ford's personal attorney and the author of the nxon pardon. his second biggest claim to fame was that he taught first year civil procedure to ol' loophole at the university of miami school of law. :D

I was just informed on money talk today on Fox. That since 1942 when a Democrat is in office the stock market goes up 10 .4%. When a Republican is in office it went up 7.4%. I never new that till today. I should have been aware of it. Sounds good i'll take that extra 3% any day. And boy that had to be hard for someone from fox to say. Must have been in the paper someplace so they had no choice.
By the way that's per year. Boy 3% per x 8 years is a nice extra jump.

Thanks for links Loop. Just got back from golfing. Yes it is interesting looking up links and reading. Quite an education.I appreciate yours as they often show sides I am not use to viewing.
I know absolutely nothing bout teapot but familiar with watergate.
One thing I think we come away with is Red Foxx's pharaphrase He wanted to be preacher but was too crooked thought about being politician but wasn't crocked enough.

Been following the Lacy Peterson trial a bit and can't see where the prosecution has much to go on. They seem awful shakey so far.Just my opinion. Can't see where they have proven much other than him being an A--hole.

unfortunately, the peterson trial is one of the instances in which, imo, our justice system fails miserably....

you have a district attorney prosecuting the case that`s way out of his league vs a high priced, savvy defense attorney....

and the case turns out to be much less a search for the truth than a competition between mismatched attorneys....

even though you have no smoking gun,you have a very strong circumstantial case that if properly presented, could be fairly compelling....

and that moron that was removed from the jury?.....a prime example of why the jury system scares the hell out of me....

but,what`s the alternative?....i wish i could offer a suggestion....permanent jurors?.....more bureaucracy?

i`m good at posing questions...not so hot with the solutions...lol

maybe loop can enlighten us a bit...
