taking 6 kids camping next week for 2 nights, anyone have any good ideas for easy and reasonably priced meals? (lunches need to be just sandwiches, as we will be tubing on a river, and cold lunch in a cooler tube is all that will work.)

hobo meal

get a hunk of alum. foil spread it out, put some raw beef on it, some sliced onions, potato chuncks, and any other veggies you want. seal it up by folding it in side the foil. toss it in the coals of the fire for 20 minutes and let it cook.
when you take it out you have a nice lil medley of stew to munch on. its easy for each kid to make their own and you can do it assembly line style so they can add what they like and stuff like that.
let me know if you need a better explanation of this.

kids lunch = bologna sandwiches
mama's lunch = beer

kids dinner = hot dogs
mama's dinner = 100 proof schnapps

simple, mama, simple.

hmmmm.... tough decision here!! Think i'll go with Marine's plan on day one and Jack's plan on day two when i'll probably REALLY need it.....LOL

couple of questions for Marine:

1. does it get thrown directly in the fire, or on some sort of rack on the logs?

2. can it be loaded down with butter or would that severly burn with such intense heat?

3. does it need turned, or does it cook both top and bottom with the flames?

4. can i hire Eddie to sue your ass when i burn my hands off getting it off of the fire?

5. you, the wife, and the kiddie wanna come to dinner? :)

make sure you wrap the food well. if grease starts dripping on to the open flame it can get ugly.
can't beat smore's either.

Just got this joke in the mail MaMa. All in fun...

Three couples went out camping.
The three husbands stayed in one tent
and the three wives stayed in the other.

At about 3 in the morning,
Bob woke up and yelled,
"Wow, unbelievable!"

Bill woke up and asked, "What's going on?"

Bob said, "I've got to go to the other tent
and find my wife."

"How come?"

"To have sex! I just woke up with the
biggest hard-*n I've ever had in my life!"

After a pause, Bill said,
"Do you want me to come with you?"

"Hell, no! Why would I want you to do that?"

"Because that's my d*ck you're holding!"

Trail Mixes

Whether you call it gorp, birdseed or trail munchies, it's all the same--high-energy food that can be eaten on the go. Offer each child a sealable plastic bag and let him fill it with a handful of his favorite dried fruits and nuts. Figure that you will need 1/2 cup to 1 cup of trail mix per person, per day. Here are a few of our favorites.
GORP
An acronym for "good old raisins and peanuts," gorp is a camping trip essential. Offer your child a sealable plastic bag and let him fill it with a handful of peanuts, raisins and M&M's (which are not in the purist version). Seal the bag and let him shake away.

RAIN FOREST MUNCH
Mix the fruits of the rain forest in a sealable, plastic bag: dried pineapple and papaya pieces, unsweetened coconut flakes, macadamia nuts, cashews and chocolate chunks.

TRAIL MIX EXTRAS
In addition to raisins and peanuts, try sweet banana chips, dried apricots or apples, corn nuts, mini-pretzels, cereal, pumpkin seeds, walnuts and butterscotch or carob chips.

Hi Annie--

Tubing on the Apple River? Thats always a good time....:D

About that Hobo meal-- we use ham and/or ground turkey rather than ground beef..the beef tends to be too greasy when cooked in a pouch like that.
If you use ground turkey, toss in a quarter of a can of cream of mushroom soup per pouch and some additional 'shrooms, onions and peas for a tasty, easy and quick to clean up camping meal.

BINGO on the Apple River, and i haven't been there since *pre child* (summer of 1991) do you know right off hand how much time the long course takes? 3.5 or 4 hours or so?? oh, and DAMN.........i could have used GROUND meat in this hobo meal thing?? why the heck did i go out and buy steak for the lil' chits?? guess when marine said beef instead of burger i didn't understand what would work :(

an additional question for Reds.... gonna be around the weekend before labor day? (guess that would be next weekend)...LOL

BIG DADDY.... wanna go camping? :D

Scott.... trail mix bags are already packed for the tubing.... i'm still trying to decide on one more evening meal.

1. does it get thrown directly in the fire, or on some sort of rack on the logs?

get a fire going, then just lay it on the coals.

2. can it be loaded down with butter or would that severly burn with such intense heat?

you are camping... do NOT overload yourself with butter. unless you have plenty of leaves handy.

3. does it need turned, or does it cook both top and bottom with the flames?

it cooks evenly all the way around

4. can i hire Eddie to sue your ass when i burn my hands off getting it off of the fire?

bring a pair of tongs einstein

5. you, the wife, and the kiddie wanna come to dinner?

no, i only eat weiners on a stick when i go camping.

Annie-

AS I recall, the long course on the Apple River should take you 4-4.5 hours with all the munchkins along....It takes us 6-7 hours when we do it, on account of all the "stops" along the shore to eliminate all the beer we are drinking( and for certain people, "smoke" breaks...) while floating slowly downstream.....:D

Actually, next weekend isn't Labor Day weekend, as Labor Day is Sept. 6th. And, no, I won't be around as some friends will be in Iowa City for the Kent State game and I'm planning on spending Friday night thru Monday afternoon at a friend's place in I.C. so as to not have to do any driving that weekend.
Should be a lot of fun watching the Hawks kick major butt in the throwback unis they are wearing for the game....

GO HAWKS!!

oops, left out a word in my question... it should have said gonna be around the weekend before labor day WEEKEND. :D

27th thru 31st is when i think we'll be there (not sure tho, as we JUST got back from 6 days down there 3 days ago.

they may make us come back again the weekend of 9/10 for my daughters birthday, and other relatives visiting from Washington, so not sure i want to throw another trip inbetween :( that 11 hours in a car gets old when the kids decide they hate each other for the day.

Speaking of hobos....reminds me of a joke....

There were these hobos sitting around a campfire one night....they were discussing things they were thankful for...

The first one spoke of the warm fire that they had.....some nights they were stuck sleeping in some cold boxcar...a few others nodded thier heads in agreement....

The second spoke of how one day he found a 20 dollar bill alongside the tracks, that was great because a hobo could buy a lot of things with a find like that.....the others again nodded in agreement....

The third one spoke of how one day he was walking along the tracks and happened upon this woman laying by the railroad tracks.....she had a gorgeous tan and he had hot sex with her for hours.....

The other hobos kinda perked up when they all heard this, they wanted to know all the details....they asked if she was stacked....

The hobo replied "Yeah, she was stacked".....

The other hobos asked..."Did she have a nice a$$?"

The hobo replied "Yeah, she had a great a$$"

The other hobos asked "So did she give you head"

The hobo replied: "I couldn't find her head."

(OK, It's a little sick, but all this hobo talk made me remember this joke.... :yup )

Yeah, Mama, I hear you about all that driving with your two angels in the car for that long...LMAO!
Someone would die if I was in that vehicle....

Yes, we are around this next weekend, the 28th and 29th. Have a city-wide Duck Creek cleanup in the AM on Saturday, then down to LeClaire Park in the PM for the rockin' rib fest....yummy ribs, cold beers and good tunes makes for a fun time....early weather outlook for those two days has some rain in the forcast, so all plans are on hold.
Weekend of 9/10 and 9/11 is Iowa-Iowa State in Iowa City. One guess as to where you will find me that weekend.....:D

Rock-in rip fest now that sounds good. Six kids in a car sounds like a hard days work. You may need some of that tasty stuff MJ mentioned above by the end of the day.
