The NCAA has turned down USC wide receiver Mike Williams' appeal to be declared eligible for the 2004 season, Dennis Dodd reports. Next up would be the 2005 NFL Draft. - CBS and ESPN

if true, thats a screw job for williams. normally, a lot of these guys bring a lot of this stuff upon themselves with poor decisions, accepting gifts, and things like that. but i just cant understand how williams gets shut out. he got jerked around by the system and now has to sit out? ncaa should use some common sense and allow him to play since this is obviously an unprecedented situation.

NCAA really dropped the ball on this one. It was an extreme situation and the NCAA needed to make it right, they never bend. Mike was caught up in the switches , he just followed the rule of the day. The NCAA should look after should look after the interest of schools and players. They seem only interested in protecting themselves.

Why would the NCAA string Williams and USC along all the way until 2 days before the game? F*ck the NCAA. If the NCAA did not want Williams back because of hiring an agent or money then why wait all the way up until now to make the decision? Why did the NCAA tell Mike to go to summer school and Williams passed?

Is this decision really in the best interest of Mike Williams? NCAA publicly has said they want to be more kinder and player friendly. They sure fell flat on their face. USC and Williams did everything the NCAA asked.

There might be an appeal process on the BMW decision. So this def. is not over but looks like it is. I strongly felt BMW would be back if passed his 2 summer school classes. It is confirmed BMW passed both classes.

Pete Carroll was just on the radio and said it's not that big an issue right now for the players, because they weren't expecting BMW to play tomorrow but he's frustrated for Mike and his family. He wasn't expecting a reinstatement, the team wasn't counting on it, they're prepared to move on, but PC seemed livid that it took so long and they made Mike jump through all the hoops when they could have let him know a long time ago.

"Williams, who said he will work out with USC strength coach Chris Carlisle while attending classes for the next four months, will be eligible for the 2005 draft. He will then be the minimum three years removed from high school."

Can't help but wonder that if Mike had done this in the first place - stayed in school for the Spring semester and trained with Carlisle - would there have been a much different result today.

The team will show the country what a true champion is all about by winning another title.

I'm shocked at this one. . . he played by their own rules and gets screwed over like this. Horrible decision by the NCAA. I'm not a fan of USC or Williams at all but am still outraged because the decision simply doesn't make any sense. There's no justification when he didn't do anything wrong but followed the rules as they were being declared and then reversed.

Can't imagine how Scott is feeling about this one but USC is still a top contender. Still, it hurts when the #1 offensive threat isn't around to compliment this team.

NCAA = National Criminals Against Athletes!

Just heard that over the radio. Thought it was pretty funny and appropriate. NCAA should have told Williams NOT to bother. F*** the NCAA.

Agree with you Nickelback & gman2.

When the initial ruling was made that allowed him and Clarett to enter the draft, it was very well known that the NFL was going to appeal the decision, and that declaring for the draft was a risk pending the outcome of the appeal. He made the decision to declare knowing full well the risks involved.

HEY SCOTT FOR USC AT ALL COSTS,

HOW'S THAT NC BET LOOKING NOW?

I made the bet knowing that Williams might not be playing this year. Having Williams play would without question help my bet. I am still confident and I would make the bet again. In fact, if Pinnacle would let me I would add another $1000 on it without thinking twice.

Watch out for #8 Dwane Jarret. This guy is the next Mike Williams. He is a true frosh but he is super talented and been tearing it up in practices. I hope USC does not suffer ANY injuries to the WR position or else I could be in trouble.

Made me laugh with that SCOTT FOR USC AT ALL COSTS line. Clever!

Mike should take the dough and put it on VT. Also the OSU/Cinci game deserves some looks.

Mike Williams on ESPNews

Seemed upbeat and more releived than anything that he's no longer in limbo.

Said Pete called at 11 saying that NCAA called to see when the team was leaving and sounded optimistic. Then the call came right before the team left.

Pete Carroll called it a "cold decision".
Mike is going to focus on school and working out with Carlisle and after the bowl game will work with the seniors for the combine.

Had his agent on a little earlier and he was very upset saying that when Mike had the choice in May to sue the NFL or attempt reinstatement, people he talked to said it should be a quick decision. He said that the 6 unit rule should never had taken this long to decide on and he implied that they delayed so long so he would have no ability to challenge the NFL. Also was angry at the NFL that it forces the played to give up elligibilty by signing with an agent before they will even consider them for the draft.

Looks like the denial is based on the lack of 6 Spring units

scott, i think youre naive if you believe he is going to "focus on school".

all he is going to do for the next 6 months is work out with elite personal trainers and stay in good shape.

he wont go anywhere near a textbook. why would he? when he made the decision to leave school for the draft last spring, that says plain as day "im going to get paid and put school on the back burner until im at least 35"

what good would going to school do him now? hes not near graduating and - frankly- theres no way it benefits him to do so. and it isnt like he is splitting atoms in his classes either. he was going to class because he had to.

Mike Williams said he will be at school this semester and he will be working out with USC's S&C coach. Maybe you need to be in school to work with the S&C coach. I don't know, just reporting what he said.

Here is an awesome quote from BMW!

"I've always felt that if you're a Trojan, you're just automatically better than everybody else."

Vtech on the moneyline keeps looking better and better!!!!!!!!!!!!!! USC with no o line; no wr's with any experience; no db's that are worth anything; vtech may have a chip on their shoulders when everyone is saying they have no chance.

Not really surprised on how the NCAA ruled they needed to set a precedent in case this same scenario occurs again next year. There is no doubt in my mind that someone will challenge the NFL draft again and by ruling against WIlliams the NCAA is hoping to slow down the flood gates for next year. I feel bad for Williams but he took a big risk for a large reward and it didn't work out!

Va Tech and the Points

Va Tech and the Points

I hope everyone is as brillant as BK and Avalavnche and loads up on VA Tech. I would love to get on SC at at the -15-16 range. Lets see if I can get this genius thinking right. He wasn't going to play in the game, wasn't practicing with the team, was not going to travel with the team and now it is official that he is not playing in the game all of a sudden Va Tech is going to win instead of being a 17 point dog? That is some handicapping you been doing.

Here's one for you - Take Florida State over Miami -I hear Bernie Kosar is not suiting up for the Canes on 9/6.

Funny post. :lol2

I completely agree with you. This decision today should have very little impact on USC against V-Tech. USC was NOT counting on Williams playing and he has not even practiced with the team in the last 2 weeks. Very smart move by Carroll to tell Mike not to practice. It might be somewhat of a distraction but nothing major because BMW was NOT expected to play this Sat.

Valid reasons why you "might" take V-Tech in this game are....
-USC's inexperience on the OL
-USC's inexperience at the WR position
-All the injuries and suspensions USC has suffered
-60k Hokie fans that are going to be there
-USC traveling across the country for opening game

flapjack you better watch out because these posters are very very sensitive and it wouldn't suprise me if they suddenly sent Madjack multiple e-mails complaining about you. They can't accept someone calling them out and often they resort to name calling instead of talking college football.

bbk

I think you might want to get your facts straight because your last post certainly would mislead people into betting V-Tech incorrectly.

USC with no o line
First of all, all 5 starters on the OL were HIGHLY recruited lineman. Saying USC has no o-line is absurd and misleading people.

USC has 2 lineman that are experienced (Matua and Drake) and the other starter was the #1 JC OL (Deuce Lit.) but this will be his first career div. 1a start. The center is Kalil who is making his first start and the other lineman is Baker who is making his 1st start. Kalil has limited game exp. and Baker has none. The starting lineman as a group is very inexperienced but very talented. Also very large with the average weight at 330 pounds. I would bet USC's OL is more talented than most lines in the country. Only thing missing is experience which could be trouble early on in the season. An attacking Beamer defense will be tough.

no wr's with any experience;
USC has 1 experienced returning WR (Steve Smith) and he is a good one. USC's other starting WR is McFoy who is inexperienced but has been in the system for few years. The 3rd starting WR is Dwane Jarret and he is a true freshman.

no db's that are worth anything
Both starting DB's are 5th year seniors and both have a lot of game day experience. Both are talented but neither are shut down corners. At the very least they are average and if I recall V-Tech does NOT have any superstar WR's. The 3rd string DB is a junior with limited game experience but loads of talent. USC is extremely talented at both safety positions so that def. will help with DB play. Unless V-Tech installed a new offensive system, they are a run first oriented team.

BYE BYE MIKEY AND GOOD RIDDINS
GUESS HE SHOULD NOT HAVE TAKEN THE $100,000 HUH

That was NOT sole reason the NCAA rejected Mike Williams reinstatement. Mike hiring an agent and taking money was not the problem. Mike's problem was the 6unit rule and Mike missed the entire Spring semester. Mike took and passed 2 summer school classes as the NCAA told him to do but then the NCAA decides now that is not enough. Mike got screwed by the NCAA for not letting him back AND dragging this along.

The NCAA made Mike & the University:

1. Enroll in summer school.
2. Declare a major.
3. Pass all his classes.
4. Fill out a TREMENDOUS amount of paperwork.
5. Go through hours of interviews.
6. Make the school fill out additional paperwork.
7. Additional meetings and interviews.

AND THEN DENY HIM AFTER HE AND THE SCHOOL DO EVERYTHING ASKED OF THEM??!?!?!?

The NCAA should be ashamed of themselves. Student-athletes best interest? My ass.

To those interested in USC's response to the NCAA ruling here it is. It is a very good read and USC is pissed over the way the NCAA handled the situation.

The NCAA just dicked USC around and they are NOT happy. Would not suprise me if USC appeals it because it seems real shady to me what the NCAA did to USC.

USC Vice President and General Counsel Todd Dickey:

"We asked the NCAA at the beginning of this process when we initially submitted the reinstatement request to tell us if the nature of Mike's amateurism violations - his declaring for the draft, signing with an agent and receiving benefits from an agent - were so serious that it was not going to be possible for them to rule in his favor. We asked them to let us know up front if this was a problem so that we could spare Mike, his family and the University from all the press attention, the long wait, the heartache, that a long, drawn-out process would entail if they knew reinstatement was going to be denied. Instead, the NCAA put us through days of further work answering supplemental requests, and searching the country for back up documentation. They encouraged us to follow through with every detail concerning the reinstatement request, leading us to believe they were serious about Mike's potential for reinstatement - that all of the documentation and details were important and would be significant in the decision-making process. We now believe that the NCAA made up it's mind from the very beginning not to reinstatement Mike.

"The NCAA told us that Mike knowingly took a risk by hiring an agent, and that despite the mitigating circumstances involving the Maurice Clarett case ruling, the breadth and depth of the violations exceeded the NCAA's amateurism principles." "Of course, the NCAA knew all of this when we first began the reinstatement process, and yet they strung this out all summer.
"I fear that the NCAA may have put Mike and USC through this process to make the NCAA appear fair and thorough in their deliberations. It appears that they may have decided long ago that Mike would not play college football again.

"It is ironic that the NCAA failed to grant a degree progress waiver when Mike not only met, but exceeded, all the NCAA degree progress requirements except the new rule that requires six units be passed in the immediately preceding regular term. We believe there were exceptional mitigating circumstances surrounding his withdrawing from school during the Spring semester and we do not believe the purpose or rationale for the six-unit rule was even implicated in Mike's case."

I guess that mike williams, usc, and their fans never really came to grips with the fact that this might have been the consequences. It seems that everyone was looking at the situation through rose colored glasses. I spoke to many usc fans around here, and they were all saying that they expected a 3-4 game suspension at the worst - some were still hopeful that he'd play on Saturday.

Everyone is going on the assumption that they (NCAA) already had their minds made up on the decision. Why? Just because the decision was harsh? Why? Just because the decision wasn't the one you were looking for? Why? Because everyone thought he did everything that they had asked?

I remember a case a few years back with another usc football player . . . the evidence that they mounted AGAINST this gentleman was astounding - but we all seemed to guess wrong on that one as well huh? The Juice is Loose!

The NCAA told him what he was going to have to do to BE CONSIDERED for reinstatement. They didn't promise him ANYTHING - just consideration.

Example: You apply for the LAPD - you do all of the tests they ask, and pass them - you go through the physical requirements - and pass - they check your background - nothing brings up a red flag - YOU ARE ELIGIBLE to become a police officer - you have done everything that they have asked - but you don't get chosen. Hum. Why not? Because they can make a decision based upon everything that they have seen - and just because you pass doesn't mean you get the job.

I could care less about usc and/or mike williams. I'd like to see him play. I have no hatred for either. BUT I do think that the NCAA made the correct decision. He knew exactly what he was getting into when he hired an agent - mistake #1. He knew he was crossing into uncharted territory with underclassmen going into the draft - mistake #2. He heard what the NFL stated AFTER Maurice Clarett WON his decision - NFL: "We will win this case - Maurice Clarett WILL NOT ENTER OUR DRAFT". - mistake #3. But the biggest mistake he ever made was the one to make himself eligible for the draft in the first place. By stating this - you are saying GOODBYE to college. He has in essence said "I'm done." That in my opinion is why the NCAA made the decision - He didn't want to come back to school - he made himself eligible for the draft - now that plan A is shot - maybe I can go back and play where I didn't really want to play in the first place.

Have you ever been out with friends - met two hot chicks - got along with both of them - both were going for you. Then came decision time - getting close to "go time". You lean in and kiss girl A. Everything seems to be going well, girl A kisses you back, and you're making out - and girl B sees what's going on. She's shunned - she didn't get picked - she wasn't your #1 pick. You punked her. Maybe you didn't tell her to "get lost ugly" - but you made it loud and clear that you made up your mind on what your intentions were. As luck would have it girl A had too much to drink - shortly there after she pukes, is put into a cab. Girl B sees this - she sees you coming over to her - she greets you because you know each other - she even embraces you in some intellectual intercourse - but guess what Jack - YOU AIN'T GETTIN' SHIT! It's a great big shiot sandwich and you gotta take a bite. You made the wrong decision, and she'll remind you of that when she goes and makes out with some other guy.
