rental cars:
A $3/day fee is now assessed for each car rented at the airport to pay for a mega consolidated rental facility (opening 2006). This is in addition to the 27.5% tax on rental cars picked up at the airport! :scared
You can eliminate the $3/day and a 10% "airport usage fee" tax by picking up your rental car somewhere else.
One of the easiest places to do this the Dollar rental yard at 4755 Swenson. It's a cheap and easy 1.5 mile cab ride to not just save $35-$45 on a typical $300 rental----PLUS you also avoid dragging your luggage on that tram ride to the airport rental facility and a possibly long wait in line there.
Many Hotel/Casinos have a car rental counter on premises. Golden Nugget, NYNY, Luxor, Mandalay Bay and Bellagio have a Dollar, for example, and there is an Budget counter at Four Queens, Stratophere and Imperial Palace. Hertz is at Harrah's. The inventory at these sites (and lesser extent at Dollar's Swenson yard) are very limited so chances for free or easy upgrade is more difficult. Unless they allow you to reserve a Geo Metro, then you usually get upgraded free 'cause they rarely have those anywhere but airport!
This website has car rental discount codes worth trying---sometimes you get big savings.
An industry study few years back discovered that LV has the biggest variance in rental rates than any other US city--so it especially pays here to shop around.
Sometimes the off airport rental pickups cost more, and sometimes they fail to leave off the $3/day and the 10%, so be sure to double check.
If you do pickup rental at airport, try to get an upgraded membership at your rental agency (Hertz #1, Dollar Fastbreak, etc). Some are easy to get, such as Alamo's Quicksilver level, which just entails signing up online. These VIP memberships will enable you to avoid any long lines at the rental counter (typically 40 min wait on Thurs and Sunday afternoons).
Cabs:
GVR is about 6 miles from airport. Milage cost for cab ride about $19, plus waiting time at lights and such, plus tip. Should be under $30, but not by much.
GVR is directly down I-215 from airport, you exit on the Green Valley Parkway. Simple and direct. You will go thru the famous "tunnel".
Be on alert for
"long-hauling" scams cabbies pull alot in this city.
Or long-hauling and prostitution solicitation (tho some MJers might not mind that last "problem"). :142lmao: Just tell cabbie "I'm going once again to Green Valley Ranch Station Casino" and he'll know you ain't no rube.
If it's a long wait for a taxi (I've seen an hour wait on holidays!), grab a skycap and he'll take you and luggage to a waiting taxi ready to go (tip him several bucks), or take a shuttle.
Whiskey Bar?!! :drinky: This will be a Grrrreat Superbowl Party!! :spotting: :spotting: :Yep:
