I just wish that someone should post the rules for when a college football Team should stop playing hard? Its all subjective. Do you quit because some poster (including myself) tells a coach to quit. Ask Louisville if they should have scored an extra touchdown when they were up 17?
I am personally glad because I did what I could to profit off Stoops' decision. He made public what he was going to do, why he was going to do it, and did it. They covered and I made money.
I'm not a big fan of "running up the score", but look at Oklahoma last year. They were taunted as being the best team in history until they quit executing. Do you think that allowing a lackidasical attide to creep into the minds of young sooners is also somehting that Stoops is trying to avoid. The reason that Stoops was No 3 in the BCS is computers especially Sagarin's power rankings. Which are based on Offense and Defense comparisons to other teams. Putting up more offense is a great way to put your team up in the puters as 4 rankings take that into acount. As of the new rankings Oklahoma is No 2, did the running up help? Obviously a little. They are still ranked 1-8 in the puters and have room to improve.
Oklahoma doesnt care about overtaking USC but they do have to stay ahead of Miami and Beating up on their opponents is the way to do that.
All this thread boils down to is whether or not Stoops should score at will anytime he wants to, any way he wants to, against any team he wants to, and to what effect that he wants it to. The answer to all of those is a resounding YES!! Stoops is the coach of Oklahoma and if he wants his starting string to stay in and take the chance of getting hurt, he can do that. If he wants to guess how the polls will react in respose to his running up the score, he can do that. If he wants to switch to the triple option in the middle of the season, he can do that. Why? Because he was chosen as the capable man to make those decisions. College football is still a game, but it's a game tied to a lot of money. Stoops is doing what he thinks will make the University more money. If you dont want him to make those decisions, become a booster, give Oklahoma a lot of money. Tell the AD that you dont like the job Stoops is doing, get a bunch of other boosters to back you, and see if that makes a difference.
OTHERWISE, be a good capper, listen to the fact that Stoops is going to score more, and bet on them to cover against an inferior team.
In addition the only time I think a team should quit trying to execute is when the clock shows 0:00. If they have a large enough lead 3TD's or more in the 4th, let the 3rd and fourth stringers play. But what do I know, I am just a fan and wannabe capper, not a coach getting paid millions to decide what is best for my team.
