Yeah, I know a garbage time TD that almost every voter will be aware of will really make a difference in the polls.

Lupica beware: Sooners may pad scores

By Carter Strickland
The Oklahoman

NORMAN - In a game that was all but over and out of reach for the opponent, Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops still had a decision to make.
Up 28-13 and on the Texas Tech 1-yard line, the internal debate commenced:

Sooners too nice?
Who's luckier: White or Peterson?

?We should probably run it in here to get to 35-13,? Stoops said he thought.

?We were on the 1-yard line and there was plenty of time to do it,? Stoops said. ?The other side of me says, ?Well that?s a guy I coached with across the way there that helped us start this turnaround.? I tried to stick to principles and I just don?t believe in that.?

A couple of weeks later disbelief washed over Sooner fans as OU was pegged as No. 3 in the first BCS poll. Now, as a result of that, Stoops has decided he may do what columnist Mike Lupica once erroneously accused him of - run up the score.

?... there is a point you might have to (score more points) when it gets down to if you?re trying to impress voters maybe in other parts of the country that haven?t seen the game that are looking at the score and looking at statistics and wanting to see, ?Hey how did you really play here??? Stoops said. ?Another score helps you in that regard.?

It was Stoops? regard for Texas Tech coach Mike Leach, a former OU assistant, that kept the OU coach from calling for another play. Stoops said he now realizes Leach, a notorious score padder, would never quibble with anyone for scoring late.

?Of all people who shouldn?t complain it?d be Leach,? Stoops said. ?And I know he wouldn?t. I?m sure he was surprised we didn?t. He said in basketball when you?re up big they don?t start shooting airballs. In golf they don?t start shanking shots. Why is it football is the only one you don?t score? As always Mike had a great analogy.?

Stoops will face another former assistant, Kansas coach Mark Mangino, this week. It?s probably a safe bet KU, a 27-point underdog, will be shown no mercy if OU has a chance to score late.

?I think it?s fair to say in some of those instances we might do something different if need be,? Stoops said.

its funny how some people ignore facts....obviously now that the BCS goes by in large part to the NUMBER of votes or points not just the rank that scoring late becomes more of a factor....

hey you have to win and win big it does still matters if you don't blow a team out just look at ap and coaches poll it will show you when a team does not win big like they should, hell tell utah that, they have 56 on unlv still 3rd qt and no way unlv can come back but not many 2nd team players in for utah and the weather there is like shit well still 3rd qt and utah scores as I type now have put 63 up 63-21 and they won't call off the dogs, so can'y point fingers when polls can go against you if you don't blow a team out. utah will do it the rest of the year as will louisville everytime they get the chance can you blame them? I can't and ok I can't blame either they have a goal the championship game so you get there the best you can.

Fletcher again swoops in and puts an end to this discussion. You are exactly right. Championships are the only thing that matters. With the chance that four teams could go undefeated, each team has to appear as impressive as they can each week. Thank You Sir.

love the quote Stoops....I heard Long used the exact same one when recruiting A.P. this year

Told the guy if you come here we will win championships, and if you don't come here we will win championships. That sealed the deal lol.

Maybe in 8th grade girls basketball you call off the dogs....but in college football polls matter, alumni matter, and scoreboard matters.

Just to throw another angle into the mix -- that extra TD pass just put another number on White's Heisman resume as well...

Stoops.....ROFL!!! He's an infant at this.

To really feel the pain, you needed to be beat by the master.

I agree Stoops is classless. Glad Pete Carroll does not run up the score. Carroll would have played the 2nd string QB AND hand off up the middle to a 4th string RB. Carroll even played WALK-ONS!

That said, looks like it worked! I think the coaches poll took away ONE first place vote away from USC and gave it to OU! Congrats Coach Stoops! Was it worth it?

Complete Lack of Classs

Complete Lack of Classs

I didn't bet it either. but in the end, it is Kansas' fault. But all this justification - is just BS. You don't run scores up when the other team is beaten period. Stoops has never been accused of being a good guy or being full of class. I blame Kansas and other teams that accept this bs. You fix scum bags running the score up to make their stats look good in one way. Kill the QB. Don't care if he threw it 10 seconds ago. The only way someone like this will ever learn is to show less class and hurt that person. If you are kicking someone who is down and you get hurt doing so, then maybe you learn a lesson. In the end, these are 18-22 year old kids playing. The head coach should have enough dignity to play with honor and set an example - polls be damned. He has shown he does not have honor or dignity and as a result deserves whatever he gets. And before you say that I am being hypocritcal talking about class and late hitting the QB in the same breath, save it. People like Stoops only understand one thing and if Stoops is smart, which I know he is, it will only take one hit to stop this behavior.

Didn't USC score a TD with one minute left to go up 38-0 yesterday?

That the 2nd string QB handing off to the 4th string RB when USC scored that TD up 31pts. You don't see the difference? Carroll has not run up the score since he has been at USC. Always plays 3rd string and walk ons in blowouts and runs the ball late in the 4th.

flapjack

I agree with you. I would have no problem if a Kansas player took a late hit on White. I was upset USC had Leinart in the game late 3rd quarter against Washington in fear of injury. Plus I think it is a plus getting your 2nd string QB playing time.

fletcher

Your post made little sense to me. What were you trying to prove? Not sure it had anything to do with the lack of class Stoops displayed against Kansas.

nothing just showing the beak down and letting you know sec has had as many teams since 2000, after i read it I saw it was not part of your post but your sig statement below, hey usc is #1 in my book where did they lose a point i have them the same in the coaches poll that is they only one I respect not a poll from sports writters. to me it is 1 usc 2 ok 3 auburn 4 miami (and I am a fan always has been but they will have troubles in another game with brock) 5 fsu. It will be usc and someone that I don't know who it will be odds on has to be ok. sec is tough to go unbeaten and I think miami hits a bump and even if they both don't think the extra title game ok plays will give them more points with the dumb computer part, now if auburn could run it and win title game the number 2 spot will be pissing some fans off because I think they would jump to 2 with sec strength, who knows that is the part the computer will start to be a major factor late in the year, now it means shit and for usc to lose they whould have to beat them self with what they have left. I saw 2 bumps maybe cal and they won and asu maybe and there was no maybe about it. but you need to score points as #2 through 5 is going to be a dog fight so they better all run some points.

Yeah, Pete Carol is just the model for class.

Are we talking about the same guy who shoved one of his assistants on the sideline during a game?

He's also a whiner.

And for the record, Stoops has NEVER been the type to run up the score. READ THE ARTICLE I POSTED EARLIER IN THIS THREAD. The STUPID BCS has forced him into this nonsense.

Who cares if he runs it up or not; this should be moved to general discussion; of course he scored because of the bcs; anyone that has watched Bob Stoops and OU knows he doesnt do; he has had numerous chances to do it and didnt; I guarantee that every other coach in his position would to the same thing. Hopefully jack will move this to general discussion so it wont clutter up this forum
Lets talk about capping not this crap

Would have been a strong argument but there was a reason why Carroll pushed his assistant coach. Carroll was disagreeing with the ref on a call or maybe it was a no call play, and Carroll let the ref have it and then Carroll stopped, but the assistant came onto the scene and started screaming at the ref and Carroll pushed him away. An assistant coach has no right to scream at a ref and that was why Carroll shoved him away. It was not even a position coach.
