...here's the deal. Last weekend I was out drinking and roughhousing with some old friends and one of those bastids hit me in the ribcage.... I didn't think much of it when i woke up sore the next day, but it has been over a week and I am still really sore. I thought I might have cracked a rib or just pulled a muscle, but there is no bruising whatsoever....

The pain is on the right side...about 3 or 4 ribs up from the bottom of my ribcage and directly under my armpit.... My question being, is there a vital organ in this area that I need to be worried about? Another friend said that is where my spleen resides, but I thought I'd get a few expert medical opinions, as he's a construction worker.

Anyone got any ideas? Do I need to go to the doctor and have an x-ray done or will the soreness eventually subside? Thanks in advance.

spleen is on the left....only way to realy injure anything is for your rib to break and puncture your lung....your liver isa little lower

you would definitely know it if you did one of the two

give it time it will get better

I cracked a rib playing basketball a few years ago and it took about four weeks before the pain was gone. Afraid to take a deep breath for awhile!!!

do not go snow or water skiing or mountain climbing, layoff the sandlot tackle football games and don't play any ice hockey for awhile. there's nothing you can do except wait for it to heal itself. don't even bother getting an x-ray because there's nothing they can do either. :D

yep, if u collapse your lung, you'll know it! We used to ace wrap people around the body or put binders on them for broken ribs, but that's rarely done anymore. One of those things that just hurts and sucks and just takes time to get better. Dr. Wooden is correct, don't waste time going to the doctor!

Taoist-

Take a look at one of those fine e-mails you send out, and that should rid you of any pain! Heck, that should at least last for about 20 minutes. LOL!

Feel better my friend!

I have had many broken through and fractured ribs in my day as well as 5 broken noses and a fractured jaw. Its tough to cough, sneeze, and crap. You can't cast ribs. they'll heal in time. GL

I was advised to retire from full contact in 95 with a 17-7 record. I now play Judo and compete and have broken my collar bone and slightly tore my rotator cuff. I am a surgeons wet dream.

First of all in no way should this be considered medical advice. (my legal friend) :)

However, in a hypothetical situation I would recommend taking Ibuprofen 600 mg. three times daily for 7-10 days as you most likely strained a muscle and this will help not only with the pain but most importantly the inflammation. A cracked rib is a possibility but there is not much to do for that otherwise anyway. X-rays would be unlikely to show anything [even if it is cracked, and the treatment is non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs anyway (Ibuprofen)]. Hope this helps..these usually hurt like heck.

I broke 2 ribs last year when kicked by a horse and let me tell you that is the worst fuxckin pain in the world. I had to sleep in a chair for 2 days, when i laid down on my back i COULD NOT get up, had to get the old lady to help me, forget about bending over. Could not laugh at all because if i did it hurt like hell especially if i sneezed. The wife made me laugh 2 days after being kicked and i started to laugh and then i had trouble breathing. Straight to the the ER room and in intensixe care. Fluid in lungs is why i couldnt breathe caused by the broken ribs.

I do not wish broken ribs on my worst fuxckin enemy. Took 2 months to heal up.

was walking back a horse to the barn after the race and a guy with another horse came right up on the side of me with his horse. At that point i stopped my horse to let the other guy and horse go ahead of me. Right when the horse got in front of me he just picked his right back leg up and kicked. I saw it coming and tried to turn to the side as much as possible. he caught me in the ribs on the left side. If i didnt turn when he kicked he would of probably knocked a hole in my stomach.
