How sad something like this happens. What he did was wrong.I'm glad he made the choice today to withdraw from the A-10 tourney.
The media is all over this. You have some screaming for his firing, suspension, resigning, etc.
Listening to ESPN,talk radio, etc. "goon,Woody hayes..etc You can now vote if Cheney should resign..is Woody Hayes incident worse, etc

I had the oppurtunity to see Chaney at several clinics.Know a
few players that played vs his teams and had one of my former players[UMass] go against his Temple teams.
I respected him as a coach because he was a "blue collar" coach.A great teacher that played old style basketball. His players never fast breaked, walked the ball up court, played half court offense and played one of the meanest match=up zones. He was a no nonsense coach that preached life, school and basketball in that order.
He ran those 5.30 am practices and all his kids went to all there classes.Miss class and you were gone regardless of your grades.
His teams never ducked anybody and they played the toughest schedule every yr.Every single year over and over again. This yr Auburn,Georgetown,South Carolina,Arizona St,Villanova.Penn, Alabama, and Wake forest were Temples 1st 8 games.Duke and Maryland a week later. That's unreal..
But Chaney sucess is not measured by his wins or losses or tough schedules. He is measured by his relationships with all his players over the yrs.The many, many kids he influenced. He spent his whole career helping kids.He never praised himself,he never had TV shows or radio shows that many coaches have making extra bucks.
The house he lives in isn't a mansion but in the Philly neighborhood.
There has never been a scandal or recruiting problem in all his yrs.He took players with a lot less talent and won with them.

But a lot like Bobby Knight he's temper has always been there. The Calipari incident was not the 1st time he lost it.Back in the early 80's he went after Tom Davis who was at Stanford.I remember Davis at a basketball clinic the yr after and everyone was talking about that.Davis even joked about it.With all the media about this last incident and bringing up the Calipari one I haven't heard anyone talk about the Davis incident. He also had an incident with the George Washington coach yrs ago.
Chaney coached a physical game. That was his style. He always preached "we don't give pts in the paint".Whenever you played a Temple team it was bump and grind for 40 minuts.
I'm sure he didn't want anyone hurt when he sent in his "goon" but he is responsible for what happened. And any coach that sends in a player to be physical has to explain to him what he wants.
Whenever I would put a kid in to foul at the end of a game you would have to explain to him.."go for the ball....don't knock him down...we don't want an intentional..reach in,etc

I feel bad about what happen to Chaney. There is a part of me that loves him.All the good he has done and yet he will be remembered for this incident.Yet what he did has to be dealt with.He has some remorse now that he realized how bad the Bryant boy was hurt.
He should be removed from his coaching duties this yr and just maybe walk away from a great career.
Maybe like many are saying he's past his time.I know that there is a part of me that will miss him.Any coach that takes his lunch pail to work, takes the Broad street subway and walks on cement....

My favorite Cheney quote
He was talking about a game in the Big 5.He was forced to go man/man and someone from the other team scored uncontested layups. He called timeout screaming at one of his players for not guarding anyone.
He said looking at the player in the huddle
"my grandmother was blind...yet she knew where the sugar and flour was in the kitchen...do you think you can find yoyr man out there"...

nice write up box, I agree with everything ... what's ironic, had the kid just fallen on his butt and not broken arm, nothing wouldve resulted in the press ... Yet still, the mad genius and passion of a van gogh or Cheney undoes many a man ... It's time for him to move along I fear and his legacy will be tainted.

take care

regardless of if the kid from st joes broke his arm..cheney sending in a "goon" was wrong and classless.....not to mention pre-meditated.

the guy is a joke.

As much as I hate Cheney, there is alot of hypocrisy here. This happens all the time - just dont usually have guys getting hurt. And, isnt every player told if you are going to foul foul hard if the guy is going to the hole? Heck, I remmber in 8th grade being told my job was to fould out in 5 minutes or I would run all night - made it by a good 2 minutes, but I sure didnt hurt anyone!

But I agree with gjn, if this is an issue it was an issue whether he broke his arm or not and it hasnt worked that way. If you look at Cheney's history, the bottom line he has gotten away with murder and it cannot be explainbed other than his race. He has 25 years of this sort of stuff.

This incident reminds me of the whole Nolan Richardson deal here at Arkansas. The one incident will be the reason everybody remembers him...not all the good he did for the program and players. They both would have had statues but for the slip up in reasoning. I wish it wopuld die down and move on.

Cheney has some anger management issuses and he crossed the line when he called his own player a "goon", If I was that kids father, I'd kick his ass, period!! He's a tyrant and deserves to be fired, but because he's black, they have to tread lightly(BS IMO)

I can't stand bobby night for the way he acts and treats his players.
If I was that kid from St. Joes, I'd sue his ass!!

Nice write up Box.

yeah i agree its a lousy situation. being a hawks fan its lousy that this incident ended the career of john bryant. john wasn't the normal arrogant basketball player on campus. he walked around modest and appreciative that he had the chance to play basketball, unlike delonte west/tyrone barley who were dicks to most people. john was the most normal player i saw on campus in 4 years and its sad that if they make the tourney he won't be able to play because john chaney is a cry baby and sends in his "goon" to take care of business.

SUN TZU, you don't get it and you are way off. If you look at Bobby Knights history, the bottom line ,he has gotten away with murder and it cannot be explained other than his race. He has 25 years of this sort of stuff. CHENEY WAS WRONG, he should never coach again, but maybe he has been around so long because so many have seen and felt the way BOX does. Why do you have to bring race into this? I will say this,If Cheney was white and called a black player a goon they would have hung him from the trees. I can see both sides of this. I dont excuse John but you have to remember were he came from. He is an old angry black man. You come up the way he did and face the shit and people like you and tell me you wouldn't be angry.John is out front for Temple ,so for Temple to have any credibility they have to let him go and they will; not because he is back or white but it is the right thing to do.

The bottom line is Coach Cheney is out of control,he can no longer mask his rage and it is time to go. Tzu and guys who think like you, have you ever wondered why Cheney is Cheney? Have you ever thought about what it would be like to walk a few steps in a 70 year old black mans shoes. No excuses for him, but I understand.

I'd like to see the kid go after Cheney with a civil suit.

BTW

Cheney had a nice career. Problem is, the way he conducts himself is a loaded gun. The chamber is revolved for each game and the trigger is pulled. Sometimes the gun goes off, most of the time it doesn't.

Also
If I were the kids dad, I'd be in the press conference after the game taking a bat to Cheney's head. That's all he seems to understand. Cheney would appreciate another dealing with things on his level. Then I'd apologize and take a couple weeks off work with no pay.

Guess this is all part of Cheney's genious "Character 101" course that he seems to get all the props for.

AllI meant is he wasnt fired because he is black. I am not arguing why he did what he did, or why he is how he is. he does have 25 years of history - go look at it. Incident iwht Calipari in 1994, incident in late 80s slapping his own player - who does that sound like? - incident with him choking a coach in 1984, and so on.

dont forget about his lunatic rants last week about Bush and the war......

the guy is wacko, always has been......it's amazing to me that he was inducted into the HOF years ago before many other MORE deserving coaches.

I admire his willingness to teach kids about life and personal responsibility once they come to college....but he needed to look in the mirror a LONG time ago.

Any sightings of our favorite civil rights/protest types that never saw a camera they didn't like?

They were coming out of the woodwork when Mr Knight did his little "wipping" act. :jerkit:
