How sad something like this happens. What he did was wrong.I'm glad he made the choice today to withdraw from the A-10 tourney.
The media is all over this. You have some screaming for his firing, suspension, resigning, etc.
Listening to ESPN,talk radio, etc. "goon,Woody hayes..etc You can now vote if Cheney should resign..is Woody Hayes incident worse, etc
I had the oppurtunity to see Chaney at several clinics.Know a
few players that played vs his teams and had one of my former players[UMass] go against his Temple teams.
I respected him as a coach because he was a "blue collar" coach.A great teacher that played old style basketball. His players never fast breaked, walked the ball up court, played half court offense and played one of the meanest match=up zones. He was a no nonsense coach that preached life, school and basketball in that order.
He ran those 5.30 am practices and all his kids went to all there classes.Miss class and you were gone regardless of your grades.
His teams never ducked anybody and they played the toughest schedule every yr.Every single year over and over again. This yr Auburn,Georgetown,South Carolina,Arizona St,Villanova.Penn, Alabama, and Wake forest were Temples 1st 8 games.Duke and Maryland a week later. That's unreal..
But Chaney sucess is not measured by his wins or losses or tough schedules. He is measured by his relationships with all his players over the yrs.The many, many kids he influenced. He spent his whole career helping kids.He never praised himself,he never had TV shows or radio shows that many coaches have making extra bucks.
The house he lives in isn't a mansion but in the Philly neighborhood.
There has never been a scandal or recruiting problem in all his yrs.He took players with a lot less talent and won with them.
But a lot like Bobby Knight he's temper has always been there. The Calipari incident was not the 1st time he lost it.Back in the early 80's he went after Tom Davis who was at Stanford.I remember Davis at a basketball clinic the yr after and everyone was talking about that.Davis even joked about it.With all the media about this last incident and bringing up the Calipari one I haven't heard anyone talk about the Davis incident. He also had an incident with the George Washington coach yrs ago.
Chaney coached a physical game. That was his style. He always preached "we don't give pts in the paint".Whenever you played a Temple team it was bump and grind for 40 minuts.
I'm sure he didn't want anyone hurt when he sent in his "goon" but he is responsible for what happened. And any coach that sends in a player to be physical has to explain to him what he wants.
Whenever I would put a kid in to foul at the end of a game you would have to explain to him.."go for the ball....don't knock him down...we don't want an intentional..reach in,etc
I feel bad about what happen to Chaney. There is a part of me that loves him.All the good he has done and yet he will be remembered for this incident.Yet what he did has to be dealt with.He has some remorse now that he realized how bad the Bryant boy was hurt.
He should be removed from his coaching duties this yr and just maybe walk away from a great career.
Maybe like many are saying he's past his time.I know that there is a part of me that will miss him.Any coach that takes his lunch pail to work, takes the Broad street subway and walks on cement....
My favorite Cheney quote
He was talking about a game in the Big 5.He was forced to go man/man and someone from the other team scored uncontested layups. He called timeout screaming at one of his players for not guarding anyone.
He said looking at the player in the huddle
"my grandmother was blind...yet she knew where the sugar and flour was in the kitchen...do you think you can find yoyr man out there"...
