I'm starting from scratch and am just wondering what the first step should be. Should I take group lessons? Individual lessons? Read about it? Get a DVD?

Thanks

I am GM at Public Golf Course/Bar/Banquet Hall in Green Bay. My club pro just set the course record at the Brown County Golf Course this morning. 33 on front nine (with a bogey) and 30 on the back. Take lessons from him...

Seriously though, if you have any athletic ability at all, take a half hour, one on one beginning lesson then practice away on the driving range for couple weeks so you are making good, consistent contact with short compact swings. Then take a lesson session of say three lessons at an hour a piece to figure out how screwed up your swing already is...

And then make sure you enjoy some nice cold beverages while you play, may be the best thing about golf. Good Luck.

Heaven, oh!!, this isn't it?!
QUIT while your ahead :scared :mj07:

Seriously, I was a hacker (high 90's) until I watched a video put out by the PGA back in the early 90's. My best score 10 years ago was a 74, but now back in the low 80's due to not playin much.

P.S. I have never taken a lesson :mj14:

Almost 200 views from all the "pros" on this board and not much real help. :mj07:

Couple weeks ago, every other thread was about golf :mj07:

Seems like everyone is keeping their secrets safe :mj21:

The best way to learn to play golf?

I've been playing a long time my suggestion would be to learn the game from the hole backwards.

Start with a 1 foot putt. Then 3 footers, 6 footers, 10 footers and finally lag putts.

In effect, learn about putting first. Then chipping, then pitching, short irons, mid irons, fairway woods and finally the tee shot.

;)

Good advice Buddy--I would also say if 1st playing --get lessons and learn correct way--much easier than developing bad habits and trying to correct them later.

The best way to learn golf is to start by going to the range and getting a feel for hitting golf balls. dont go get lessons right away. just go out to the range, or a field and pound balls until you get blisters. this will give you a good idea of the clubs, what your limits, weaknesses and what you think might be your strengths. once you are comfortable with hitting balls, go to a pitch and putt course and get in as many holes as you can, see how you do there and again, just keep pounding balls to start. there is no use going to a professional when you just pick up the clubs. once you are done with that, find out who is a good teaching pro in the area and go to him/her. they will prbly work with your grip/stance/early stages of your swing for a while. this is the beginning stages and you shouldnt rush this part. everything else you do will always be beneficial and help you out: videotape your swing, watching the dvds, watching the golf channel(there are always good programs on there for learning the game), working on your short game(this should come in the later stages of practicing).
ultimately if you want to try and get out on the golf course as quickly as possible, but golf is an expensive hobby and there is no worse feeling that dropping a hundred bucks on the weekend and chopping it around the course while not really getting any better.
practicing your swing and learning the game will make your round more enjoyable.

Look in a magazine or on the net and learn how to grip the club first. pound balls in the nearest field. Go to the local course and chip and putt. Try to play with guys who are good and experienced who can point out flaws. Have fun!!
