The best way to learn golf is to start by going to the range and getting a feel for hitting golf balls. dont go get lessons right away. just go out to the range, or a field and pound balls until you get blisters. this will give you a good idea of the clubs, what your limits, weaknesses and what you think might be your strengths. once you are comfortable with hitting balls, go to a pitch and putt course and get in as many holes as you can, see how you do there and again, just keep pounding balls to start. there is no use going to a professional when you just pick up the clubs. once you are done with that, find out who is a good teaching pro in the area and go to him/her. they will prbly work with your grip/stance/early stages of your swing for a while. this is the beginning stages and you shouldnt rush this part. everything else you do will always be beneficial and help you out: videotape your swing, watching the dvds, watching the golf channel(there are always good programs on there for learning the game), working on your short game(this should come in the later stages of practicing).
ultimately if you want to try and get out on the golf course as quickly as possible, but golf is an expensive hobby and there is no worse feeling that dropping a hundred bucks on the weekend and chopping it around the course while not really getting any better.
practicing your swing and learning the game will make your round more enjoyable.
