Fonda to tour in opposition to war in Iraq

Associated Press
Published on: 07/25/05
SANTA FE, N.M. ? Actress and activist Jane Fonda says she intends to take a cross-country bus tour to call for an end to U.S. military operations in Iraq.

"I can't go into any detail except to say that it's going to be pretty exciting," she said.

Fonda said her anti-war tour in March will use a bus that runs on "vegetable oil." She will be joined by families of Iraq war veterans and her daughter.

They plan to return to the Santa Fe area, where she was promoting her book, "My Life So Far" on Saturday.

Prompted by a question from the audience, Fonda said war veterans that she has met on a nationwide book tour have encouraged her to break her silence on the Iraq war.

"I've decided I'm coming out," she said.

Hundreds of people in the audience cheered loudly when Fonda announced her intentions to join the anti-Iraq war movement.

"I have not taken a stand on any war since Vietnam," she said. "I carry a lot of baggage from that."

Fonda incited controversy in July 1972 when she was photographed sitting on a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft gun while on a tour of the country to drum up support to end the war.
.............................................................

Didn't she learn any lessons. Just stay out of anti-war stuff. This is going to backfire and hit her right in the ass.

She obviously marches to a beat of a different drummer and while I oppose everything she stood for during Vietnam, but if she opposses whats going on in Iraq right now then she would be in the majority whom see through this three ring circus.

Unlike Vietnam, we cannot just end operations in Iraq. In fact, we need more troops and resources. If we leave that place a mess, it will make Communist Vietnam look like Disneyland.

I feel I know what Bush Inc. is going to do - they will have everything on paper looking like they created a country, paint a pretty picture, leave and call it a success. Meanwhile, Iraq will collapse into chaos. But it will no longer be our responsibility in his mind. Bush and his supporters will claim victory and there will be no way to get through their heads what a screwup it was.

Bush is more concerned about looking good than what's good for Iraq. His timeline is the rest of his presidency. Iraq's timeline is probably a couple decades. We need to do what's right for Iraq at this point, not Bush.

smurphy quote:"Bush is more concerned about looking good than what's good for Iraq."

murph, my friend...you keep saying this.....how do you know this ?

if he was more concerned about how he looked then he would not have invaded iraq.

hope your father is doing well.

My view is that Bush never invaded Iraq for the benefit of the Iraqis anyway. Others feel differently. Depending on which part of the timeline you look at since plans were first underway, you get a different explanation from Dubya himself.

Regarding our exit and the administartions fanfare around the "success" - that is just a prediction.

Thanks AR - that reminds me I gotta call him today. Should be about time for him to finally leave your town and get his ass to Tulsa!

I wonder how long it took her to find enough military families to fill a bus? I doubt if she does any campaigning near military bases--and her cross country bus tour will probably start in San Fran-"-drive" across country and next stop in Boston :)

When most people want to feel young again, they work out, look through old pictures, bang someone younger, take a shot at doing something sports related for an extended period of time (LOL)..........

This broad just becomes a bigger bitch.

The only thing she ever understood was how to be Barbarella. ...I predict this generation's Jane Fonda will be Cameron Diaz.

It's a shame Saddam is a little to busy at the moment, she could ride with him on tour just like with Ho Chi Mihn in N. Vietnam :stfu:

the bus will run on freedom or spit. Only thing is it will have to
make stops to get enough of a crowd to fill it up with spit.

We should have never even been in Vietnam to give Jane a chance to oppose our actions there....

As far as "we cannot just end operations in Iraq. In fact, we need more troops and resources. If we leave that place a mess...."

It will still be a mess whenever we end the game of charades and pull out....the sunnis and the shias are already at war via suicide bombings, the police precincts are getting blown up right and left, the insurgents are still streaming in to strap on a bomb or plant a roadside bomb.....

Putting more troops and resources into the mix is just a big waste and placing more of our guys into body bags.....

The sooner we pull out of there the sooner they get to whatever destiny they will earn for thier region....if that destiny involves more violence, which past history says it will, then let it happen...

If they want to kill each other off we damn well shouldn't be standing in the middle taking the bullets. Let the fawkers fight. :yup

Yes let them keep killing each other as they have for over 2000 years. We will never stop it. And putting our soldiers there in the middle was B S. Afghanistan yes, Saudi yes, Both involved with 9/11. Iraq NO.

Nice pics of the ladies at the top of their game. Just like Jane looks weird now, imagine Cameron's giant mouth in 35 years....

We broke Iraq, we gotta fix it. ...But we won't, I understand that. I just dread the phony victory Bush will celebrate and the endless rants from neocons on how it was L-words who lost the war.

...and to think they speculate about invading Iran or Korea????? WILL NEVER HAPPEN. This country doesn't have the fortitude for something like that. We sure were high on some kinda patriotic drug a few years ago. But so very few were and are willing to actually make even the smallest of sacrifices.

....starting to sound like weasel.... (dot dot dot)....

Bush is an absolute moron (I can't stress how stupid I believe this man to be) and we let him lead us the way...gave him a blank check...and then actuallyu re-elected him :mj07: :mj07:

time for a drink! :)
