So, what happens with the folks who are in nursing homes that are unable to care for themselves? What happens to nurses, ER personel?? DO they keep open the ERs? Are the EMS and other emergency people, police, firefighters made/encouraged to stay? Are they paid hazardous duty wages?

I started wondering about this last night at my job and pictured myself sitting through a hurricane if I lived in that area.

All the poor people who have experience with this still probably don't have power to run their computers.

Saw on the news they have a section of the superdome for these type of people. One person had his IV hanging over a bannister....bad conditions said the chief medical examiner. One person who was on a honeymoon with his wife who happened to be a doctor has been working non stop with the sick and elderly...What an experience, huh?

I saw coverage on the news the night before last where personnel at one of the hospitals in New Orleans had basically bunkered down there for the duration. I think they were able to bring in their families and they were basing all care above the fifth floor. The services located in the lower levels of the hospital were either closed or moved, if possible.

I am an employee of a state public health department and have already been advised that, in the event of mobilization of our emergency response, I will be expected to report to work (50 miles away) if the roads are passable and to report to my local public health department if they aren't.
