I dont know, what do you guys think? Im sure this will be a hotly debated topic in the coming weeks. Mother Nature has shown what she can do to a city under sea level, and WILL do it again so do you rebuild?

How do you account for the landowners? As long as there are no laws against building there, it will happen. Unless they cant get flood insurance again, then its a risky proposition

question for any of you insurance agents.... Katrina is/was not the actual cause of all the disaster in New Orleans .... the levee giving way was. Is this considered FLOOD damage? if so, will insurance companies even pay if people didn't specifically have FLOOD insurance?? and can you even GET flood insurance in a place below sea level?

many of the other cities flooding was a direct result of the hurricaine, but the problems in NO didn't start until well after it had passed them by to the east.

You are required to have flood insurance BY LAW BY THE GOVERNMENT if you live in a flood zone which I guess N.O. applies. If you dont live in a flood zone you cant buy it. They take it pretty seriously and even take people to court over not paying it, unlike a normal Insurance policy where they just cancel. Doesnt matter what the cause of the flooding is, IE: levee breaking vs storm. But the problem is the government keeps "helping" people rebuild over and over and over in these areas. People are moving INTO these areas rather than out. Not trying to be insensitive at all, just saying they should help you once and thats it.

They will leave it right where it is. Just like all those folks keep building in earth quake areas. Or look at Miami hurricanes have ran that city over how many time. It's still there. Or those fire zones in California. They burn down and build same spot. How about the barer islands along east cost. Get blow-en away and they build same spot.

No, I am sure they will all come here to Houston to stay. As horrible as what happened truly is, I am less than thrilled to know that the same folks who have been looting and shooting at the police are headed this way.

i lived in a flood zone 2 houses ago and i wasn't required to get the insurance FROM THE GOVERNMENT once my house was paid for, only when it was mortgaged and the bank required it.

i don't remember clearly but i had to get it from some special government insurance. it was seperate from my homeowners insurance.

i DO remember that once the bank was paid, it wasn't required anymore. in fact, i had trouble getting it.

and like djv said. of course they'll build it back up like they do in all the other trouble areas.

i lived near water one time in my life and i was flooded 3 times and i will NEVER go near that chit ever again. not for a home that i am living in, that's for sure. who needs that aggravation?

florida? out of the question. the carolinas? out of the question. california? out of the question. where it snows 10 feet a year? out of the question. where it rains everyday? out of the question.

where it's 90+ degrees with 80% humidity? well, i'm stuck here for awhile :D

Dr. Jack this is a major remodel of which this nation has ever seen OR had the oppurtunity to strategically re-orchestrate an entire region to accept and refine the oil we need for this football loving country to drive our trucks.

This will be the biggest rebuilding project in all of our lifetimes and also the most important due to our energy situation. This may cost as much as Iraq and people better get used to it real quick.

But... Once we tackle this dog and power grid and refiining capacity well be back where we should be..The only place to live in this world... USA

GO JETS

Would I want live there, NO. Will they rebuild/repair, YES! Heard today that tonage wise more comes through port of NO than any other in U.S. That accompanied with the fact that they can build better/multiple dikes to deal with these situations if they are willing to spend the money makes it a done deal. Also heard the dikes in place were only meant to handle cat 3 hurricanes. When asked why a former high-up corp of engineers planner basically said they didnt want to pay what it would cost for what they needed. The last theory I heard and probably the one I see happening will be a series of dikes protecting the interior of N.O. instead of the vast amounts of area the current ones do. This would allow businesses to feel somewhat safe, but if you were to live outside of them your taking your chances. The only thing for sure is patching what they have now will not work, they will have to make vast improvements in order to have a chance against mother nature!

I understand not everyone had a car or money to evacuate. What has happened is an absolute tragedy. But explain to me why these people didnt go to shelters before the storm. Not a one of these folks should have died, or be out in the elements. The people "needing rescue" were all warned what could happen. In fact they were told they would not be rescued.

UGA...fine, PORT OF NEW ORLEANS can still exist, just make it a hell of a drive from the actual CITY!!! if they rebuild, it needs to be out of flood plains with roads leading to the gulf that won't devistate the entire city with a levee malfunction!!!! don't think anyone is saying new orleans shouldn't exist...just that it should MOVE!!!
