Are these evacuees in the Astrodome nuts?

They have two cruise ships in Houston to be used as shelters to ease the burden on the other facilities. They make an announcement at the Astrodome that they could start lining up to move out to the ships. Not one person did so? They would rather be sardined in the Astrodome with 20,000 people than go to a crusie ship where they'd surely have a cabin, a private shower and a little privacy. WTF is that all about?

The ships are actually in Galveston, not that it makes any difference. They were planning on busing about 4,000 of them to the ships, but not one person wanted to go.

if they weren't, they wouldn't be at the Astrodome in the first place..... all they have there are people that defied the order to evacuate, while likely other not so well off people listened, found a way out, and are now having to fend for themselves elsewhere since they aren't ones that needed RESCUED!!!

lets see here, if we stay in NO, and have to be rescued, we will get put up for free, be given free meals, but if we leave we are no longer part of the city until insurance money comes thru.

i still wonder how long FEMA plans on housing and feeding before they force any able bodied person to at least do some work for what they are getting....

it pisses me off to no end that those that evacuated are getting way less than those that didn't.....hell, they lost their houses too.
not sure how long the Astrodome said it would house people, but did hear that the ships were leased for one month. (think that may be why some don't want to go?)

The people that were able to evacuate, or chose to, can feel free to join everybody else at any of the shelters where they're living it up, and many have joined them.

I was surprised that 80% evacuated. That's a very high number compared to cities with other hurricanes appraching, even of that strength.

Headline "Fox News Exclusive" You heard it here.
The US Government has agreed to purchase 2 Carnival Cruise vessels mysteriously sunk off the coast of Galveston with 8,000 party goers whooping it up on board. The Navy categorically denies any of it's submarines were in the area. Stay tuned for updates at 11

Never mind, W's mom has the answer. They were poor anyways, so living with 20,000 other people all smashed together works very well for them.

"And so many of the people in the arena here, you
know, were underprivileged anyway, so this--this (she
chuckles slightly) is working very well for them."

One thing about Barbara is that she always seems so in touch with the common man.

one response that would sound realistic from those not wanting to go (all of them evidently) is that in NO WAY do they want to be out on the Gulf before hurricaine season is over.

Yeah, that makes sense. I'm sure after all the trauma from Katrina the last thing they want is to be on a ship. Still, when they announced that, I would have been sprinting for the exit.

Even with air conditioning and working toilets, the Astrodome has to stink bigtime. Let alone, how in the world could you sleep? It's a great shelter for that many people, but given an alternative of a cruise ship, i'd be out.

This is just hearsay so I don't know if its true or not but a friend just told me they are taking buses of the people from New Orleans and letting them stay in some of the vacant hotels in Vegas. Room and board only, not the hotels on the strip but ones in the vicinity.

Uh, they fell for that "cruise ship" line 400 years ago. Not about to make the same mistake again.

The state of Texas is quickly (yet quietly) regretting its generosity. There are a great number of efforts ongoing to get these folks spread out to other places.
