Just got back into town ...and now for the rest of the story..

Made it up to the Dells by 10pm and drove by where I was going to hunt to make it easier to get to. Found it with no problem so I went to the motel and checked in for the night.

Got up at 4am and headed for the area. I walked in and found out that the guy that checked it out for me marked it beautifully. I found a good tree, climbed up and settled in till the sun came up. 30 minutes later I saw some flashlights headed towards me and I could see they were following the tracks I made getting in. I flashed my light at them and one guy came up and asked what I was doing on the land. I explained I had written permission and told him who it was from. He was the owner of the land connecting to this piece of property. He said he was just checking because there is a big problem up there with people trespassing. He explained where him and his kids were going to be and then said good luck. Nice enough guy after he found out I had permission.

15 min before sun up I looked to my left and saw a huge doe walking about 50 yrds. I let her go because the season hadnt officially opened yet.

10 min after sunrise something caught my eye to the left again. Here it was 4 does about 50 yrds away. I held off on shooting because I was hoping a buck would show up. 3 of the does didnt even realize I was there. They were just scrounging around for food. It took the 4th one 5 minutes to see me. We sat there about 10 minutes staring at each other. Then her head started to bob and she started to paw at the ground. I didnt take the shot on her because I wanted a profile shot not a straight chest one. She took off and the other 3 followed.

About 720am Damned if another deer didnt show up in the same spot. Put the scope on him and saw the rack. He started walking closerand stopped where I would have to take a shot between 2 trees that were crossed. I waited and he came out to the right and ended up 15 yards from me before I pulled the trigger. It was a perfect shot. He dropped right there. I ended up being a 6 point buck.  All this within the very 1st hour.

I gutted him and dragged him out of the woods to the jeep. Now for the next problem...how to get him loaded up. I was going to throw him over the spare tire but i figured he wouldnt ride very long there. I knew I couldnt lift him onto the roof by myself. All of a sudden a car pulls up and a kid about 20 jumps out with camera in his hand. In broken english he asks me to take a picture of him with my deer. My answer..Hell yeah..just help me throw it on the roof. He got his picture and I got the deer loaded.

So by 930 the deer was registered and I gave the wife a call. She hadnt seen anything yet. Went to the motel and took a nap. The wife called again and said she was heading down by me about 5pm. That right there made my weekend.

Headed off to the casino but the tables were full so I stuck $40 in an idiot machine (slot) and left. Stopped at a place called Bronco Billys for a few beers and met up with the guy and his wife that checked out the land for me. They saw some deer but let them pass because they wanted the big one and were staying up there all week so there wasnt any hurry. About 6pm the wife called and said she had just hit a deer with my truck. Bent the bumper in and broke off the plastic that holds the daytime running light in. I told her to not even worry about it. Its better to hit the deer than run run into the ditch trying to avoid it.Insurance claim gets filed tommorow. She shows up at the bar and we started kidding her on how I can kill a deer with a 1/2 ounce piece of lead and she couldnt kill one after hitting it with 3000lbs of metal. A couple of Kareokee songs later and we called it a night.

Got up this morning and headed into the woods. Like a dumb ass I had removed the markings on where to turn off the trail yesterday. I stumbled around for 45 min looking but couldnt find it. Finally the property owner from yesterday shows up on the trail. I told him the problem and he walked us right in to where I had been set up yesterday. I let the wife have that tree and I moved off to the side. I got into my stand and then went to sleep. I had already decided that I wasnt going to shoot today. I was going to let the wife have the first shot at everything. Stayed there till noon without seeing anything and decided to head on home. The wife could have stayed for 1 more day of hunting but she was tired from the day before so we left.

Heading back up there Wed night till Sunday. Still going to let the wife have the first shot so she can get a deer this season.

Had a great time and can almost taste the beer sticks now.

Will post pics tommorow.

Agent...If the deer were not killed down to a certain level they would overpopulate and end up starving to death. Also every person I know that hunts keeps the meat or donates it to food pantrys for the homless. Its not like its a free for all out there to just see how many you can kill.

bubba...congrats on the successful hunt. You didn't even get time to enjoy the scenery ;) Now you get to look forward to some tasty marinated venison steaks. My brother got his 8pointer yesterday so we'll be grilling here soon. Thanks for sharing :)

T4W ... didn't realize you were in IL during the months other than summer... what area?

Mama.....I live close to the Wisconsin border in Rockford, Illinois. Not too far from Iowa either. Used to travel to Clinton, IA and the Quad Cities for softball tourrnaments awhile (a good while ;) ) back.

Was just joshing you bro! I USED to hunt all the time but just lost any desire about 10 years ago. We own about 130 acres very close to here and I can go kill a deer any time, just dont want to. I used to donate the meat and as long as it gets eaten kill away! You can tell by your post you know when to shoot, when not to and how to act in the woods. Hunters like you never bother me its the other guys and you know who Im talking about! :mj14:
