To make a long story short I applied for a new job and had 2 interviews and will probably get an offer on Monday. It's a good job I'll be making six figures. However, after the first interview I was told I would be getting a background check which was no problem everything checked out. Once I go in and accept the offer on Tuesday they will fingerprint me and have me do a drug test which again will be no problem. I'm just curious why companies go through all of these steps - I haven't had to go through them before. Sort of a pain in the ass but I guess they are covering their ass just in case of hiring bad people.

Depending on what the job is, there may be a general clearance level that needs to be granted to you. Or you may be working at a client site that requires one (not sure the job, but its DC.. often happens)

But the best guess would be that the cost of a bad hire is tremendous these days, and comanies will do anything under the sun to ensure that they aren't getting a lemon.

Selling Mortgages for HSBC bank, not a loan officer more like Mortgage Sales Representative.

My friend owns a security company and he said the reason I am going through all of this is because I am handling large amounts of money and their is a degree of trust involved, which I understand. I just think some of the stuff is a bit extreme.

Kneifl-

All of my employees must undergo a drug screening for insurance coverage. I tell all my employees that I submit them to a background check to encourage them to be honest on their application/resume. I rarely spend the money, but I tell them all I will.

Funny thing-about two years after i started my company i was told by my insurance company to drug test all new hires---no problem-I had like two people total out of about 50 employees over about 4 year period test positive-the funny part is that I was told by my father (lawyer) and my insurance company to by no means test my existing employees--in New York state there has been all sorts of law suits about testing after a hire..........random drug testing in ny is a thing of the past (except for government, law enforcement etc)-they just are not really shouting it from the rooftops---keep the employees clean.........

Michigan Firm Won't Allow Smoking, Even On Employee's Own Time

LANSING, Mich. -- A Michigan health care company has fired four of its employees for refusing to take a test to determine whether they smoke cigarettes.

The company enacted a new policy this month, allowing workers to be fired if they smoke, even if the smoking takes place after-hours, or at home.

The founder of Weyco Inc. said the company doesn't want to pay the higher health care costs associated with smoking.

An official of the company -- which administers health benefits -- estimated that 18 to 20 of its 200 employees were smokers when the policy was first announced in 2003. As many as 14 of them quit smoking before the policy went into effect.

60 minutes had a story on a company like this a couple weeks back. They said it was legal.

I would think it would be legal - as long as a company does not discriminate on the basis of the standard categories that apply to all companies (you know: race, religion, etc.), then I would think they can make whatever policies they wish

(And honestly, I would hope so)

Saw that also on no smoking at home. If that goes through obesity next--kills more people than lung cancer--what about aids--will they fire all those of other persuations--what about women--health premiums generally higher for fremale probs in later years--and speaking of older ages what about anyone over 50 in general?
These might seem extreme but they all warrent risk ratings as high as smokers--some more.

Not trying to hi jack your thread Kneifl. Congrats on nice job--would expect the extra security on job with that much responsibilty.

to become a realtor i had to do the live scan, where they fingerprint you and run background check. there pretty serious about it. they have to be here in so cal. there is so much fraud going around its disgusting. especially with the illegal immigrants. on both the client and the financing part of it. makes me sick. there are so many illegals that lie, and they see it as their right. i learned to keep my thoughts on illegals to myself. when alot of them tried to convince me that g w bush was the mastermind behind sept 11, 2001 and then that the doctors were better in mexico i knew i was in trouble.
background checks are important when dealing with substantial sums of money.

Try getting an Insurance license :scared Hell I cant even move without notifying them within 30 days or I'm breaking the LAW :mj07: Credit checks, the whole bit. And by the way I think they should! Nothing worse than hiring some sex offender or somethng and then after the fact people say "dont you guys check on who youre hiring?"
