Ok, went to the boat on Monday and was getting crushed as usual at the table. On the way home, I got to thinking of the houses edge and trying to figure out where it comes from. Assuming I'm heads up with the dealer, is the edge because I dont hit on certain hands such as 13 for me vs the dealer having a 5 up? The "book" or standard play here is to pass. But it seems to me more often than not the dealer will have like a 4 down, hit a face card and beat me. So the question is if someone were to play heads up and play just like the dealer, must hit till 17 then stay. Regardless of what the dealer shows, wouldnt that nullify the house edge? I have never seen anyone play this way. But that, coupled with a good double down strategy, 2/1 on blackjack, and smart splitting should even thngs up right? Help, I need some expert advice as to whether or not Im way of base.

you are way off base.

blackjack is 100% unbeatable unless you are counting cards. the richest man in the world would go broke over the course of time playing perfect strategy because that 1% or close to that number house edge will bleed him to death.

your scenario doesn't work. the main edge for the house is that you ALWAYS go first. you bust out a lot of times before they even have to do anything.

don't play blackjack. compelete waste of time. and i don't want to hear anyone with a sane mind telling me that they can beat blackjack without counting because i guarantee your sample size is too small.

Best chance to win with BJ and what I used to do is just go up to the table once every few hours or so and lay it down on 1 hand only and get the fuk out of there. I spend all my time in the sportsbook so every hour or so I will just go up to any table and play 1 hand for a big amount. I will also sit down and play for the fun of it with small amounts just to have fun

Are you asking what creates the advantage for the house? I think it really boils down to the player has to play first. The player in a bust situation has to play while the house waits. I understand that that logic would say the house has a disadvantage because it can't doubvle on good hands orm split, but those situations present the olny chance to win money for the player over time..and the 1% has already factored that in

I'm not sure if this is how they deter it but cards are usually dealt down to players in single deck to deter counting. Maybe not?

I agree that blackjack is not beatable over the long haul. The one thing that usually works for me is that I do think that shoes can get hot or cold, or specific seats can get hot or cold. You guys probably know what I mean with the hot shoe. When you experience it, you really have to press your bets and go big. The few times I've been able to make big hits at BJ was by taking a lot of risk when the cards were falling and really press my bets.

There aren't many one deck games and the ones that are left only pay 6:5 for a blackjack. Learn to count the cards (its not that difficult) and play 6 deck shoes with great rules (DAS, resplit aces, dealer stays on A6) and you can make some money.

...those are the only ones that you can expect a profit...only if you're sober and counting. :) :mj14:

...6 deck shoes?!!?!?! ...can't agree here unless there's a team working. :mj14:

No need for a team. You need to make sure you have adequate bet spread (1-8) and decent cover so you aren't noticed. But that is definitely a +EV situation.

What is the significance/math of 21? Would the odds be the same if the game was 23? Just wondering how they came up with 21 and staying on 17 and all that.
