Wow. Last I heard they had just found the one dead body. I assumed there would be 12 more to come. Outstanding news.

This is such a great story, because it seems like everytime I turn on the News, weather local or national, they start off with the murder, or more violence in the Middle East (Do not take this as me supporting the war though), or a natural disaster with the death toll rising...

Anyway, a lot of bad shi+...But a miracle rescue, after 40-50+ hours stuck in a dark cave a mile down in the earth, makes it nice to see the news for once...

I hope this is all over the Magazine covers instead of the break up of Jessica's Pimp son Nick Legay... :cursin:

Welcome to 2006 boys and girls... Lets help each other out this year!

Families Say 11 of 12 W.Va. Miners Dead

By ALLEN G. BREED, Associated Press Writer
2 minutes ago

Family members learned early Wednesday that 11 of the 12 coal miners who were initially thought to have survived an explosion in a coal mine have died.

Families learned of the deaths from mine officials more than three hours after Gov. Joe Manchin said he had been told 12 of the miners survived the disaster. The sole survivor of the disaster was hospitalized, a doctor said.

International Coal Group Chief Executive Officer Ben Hatfield told the families that only one miner, Randal McCloy, had survived the explosion.

Hatfield told the families gathered at the Sago Baptist Church that "there had been a lack of communication, that what we were told was wrong and that only one survived," said John Groves, whose brother Jerry Groves was one of the trapped miners.

At that point, chaos broke out in the church and a fight started.

man, that's awful getting those people and the nation's hopes up and then say it's a mistake. Terrible!! I guess a lot of people who aren't night owls won't even know, or at least they'll get the whole story at once and won't be so disappointed.

Man, wasn't expecting this story when I woke up.

How awful! The swing in emotion is hard to imagine.

Just awful!

Hatfield said the erroneous information spread rapidly when people overheard phone calls between rescuers and the rescue command center. In reality, rescuers had confirmed finding 12 miners and were checking their vital signs, he said.

"The initial report from the rescue team to the command center indicated multiple survivors," Hatfield said during a news conference. "That information spread like wildfire, because it had come from the command center. It quickly got out of control."

So basically, they overheard cell phone conservations and went to press? The USA Today, and the Tennessean (local rag) both have the miners on thier front page as alive.

My heart goes out to the families. :sadwave:

Horrible, I go to bed after a 1-5 night but feeling ok because I thought all those guys survived and what a story and then wake up to hear it was a mistake? Inexcusable, those poor families

at 10:30 EST the NYT.com still has the story wrong:

"People were rushing out, yelling, 'There's 12 alive!' " Mr. Goff said.

"When they found the body and said the carbon monoxide levels were high, I doubted my faith," he said, "but now we've got 12 men walking off that hill."

Throughout the day, trained rescue teams equipped with oxygen canisters had rotated through the mine, meticulously repairing the damaged ventilation system and combing through the mazelike corridors for the men.

Emotions seesawed throughout the day with each new piece of information. In the morning, hopes had run high that the miners, most of them highly experienced workers in their 40's and 50's, had barricaded themselves in a corridor with breathable air to wait for a rescue party.

By late afternoon, mine company officials said that with only a few thousand feet of mine left to search, the chances of the miners being alive seemed remote. But late in the evening, officials said the fact that 12 miners had apparently not been killed by the force of the explosion renewed hopes that they were alive.

12 Miners found ALIVE

Among Libtards!!
I can't believe this......the media ran with an unconfirmed story......I can't even imagine the emotion of the families who were in the church when told their loved ones were alive and then 3 hours later told they weren't (why so long when they knew?).....somebody needs to pay for this!! Phucking media strikes again...it is one thing to false report election results.....false reporting something like this is inexcusable and as far as I'm concerned grounds for doing whatever they want to the moron or morons who thought they would be the hero to report something like this first. Any family member who shoots one of these hero reporters like I would should be given a freebie....it is long past due that people need be held accountable in this country for major phuck ups!! This story is making me sicker the more I hear about it......the lady who was so happy that she wasn't going to have to tell her young son that daddy wasn't coming home....congrats to whoever the hero was to first break the story.....nice job!!
