that's 2 days for the history books. we only have a few more tough ones to go so keep fighting the urge. i can tell there are a few that are going to kick this habit permanently and i am going to one of those. keep posting your experiences and non smokers please keep your thoughts coming because it all helps.

yesterday i used the patch and the gum. today i'm going to give it a try without the patch. i just took it off after that least sentence. i'll let you know how it goes. i had 4 or 5 pieces of gum yesterday and will try to cut down on that today as well.

damn cough is still there. not nearly as bad as it used to be but worse than yesterday when i woke up. i didn't cough at all yesterday during the day, just a little in the morning. i guess it takes a few more days for the coughing to completely go away. it better go away, it did the last time i quit. i know when my dad finally quit the cough never went away, i surely hope that's not the case for me or any of you.

i'll be back.

some of my favorite quotes from DAY 2:

I always wanted to hook up with that swanky broad from IT dept and last night, thanks to the patch, it all happened in vivid color.
:D

BE PROUD OF YOURSELF....
You are a lot stronger than you may have been willing to admit!
Don't let your hard work go to waste today!

We are not smokers!!!

If you smoke, you will die before your time and I want to live for a long time.

it is OFFICIAL!!!! this is HELL!!!!!!

I want to be put into a drug induced coma for the next 72 hours if it plans on staying this brutal!!!!

not smoking for a couple of days has always seemed like a breeze, (with a patch on) but trying to break the nicotine addiction is a whole different ball game. So it's almost like i'm trying to break 2 addictions at one time....... if i need a patch or gum i have lost.... can't break the addiction by still putting it into my system :( if that worked, cutting DOWN on smoking would work too.... UGH, this SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hang in there mama and listen to kosar. this addiction is MORE psychological then physical. it's more habit than physical. the smoke going down and blowing it out feels good. we light up because of habit. who cares if you're addicted to nicotine just quit filling your lungs with the smoke and chemicals and tar and poisons. have a patch or gum and quit putting the smoke down your lungs, for now anyway.

PS Doctor friend I know claims the last thing you should do is use the gum....just gotta go cold turkey...
that's the LAST thing ANY doctor would say. i call BULLSHIT on this statement!

good luck today, folks!

you should leave the patches on 24 hours a day and go thru their recommended steps or you will be really wanting a smoke. cut straws the length of the cigs and smoke them...Good luck

Day 3 -- Anyone coughed up a yellow and green cat, yet? I had a whole freaking litter inside me when I quit!

I do not like the idea of cutting a straw. you are trying to break the habit of smoking. I agree with Jack that even though the nicotine addiction is strong, the psychological addiction is the hardest part to kick. YOU DO NOT NEED THESE ****ING THINGS!

Say it with me:

Jack I think you will find through the next few days you might cough more--The shit starts breaking loose after 3 or 4 days. The diff is the dry cough should subside but you will start hacking up as Dawg said some nasty looking stuff. Thats GOOD!
I will know if I kicked it on 4-7.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Was also talking to guy in our age bracket that said after about the 3rd week he started waking up with those morning throbbers again--had to get on his hands and knees to roll over--his wife tried to get him to start back. :)

...last night the gf was so happy that I didn't smell/taste like smoke, she gave me a little "special" encouragement. :SIB If I can get that kind of treatment a few times per week for the next few months, I will never even think of picking up another one of those damn things again! ;)

...woke up hacking a little this morning myself. Same routine...grab a piece of gum and in the shower...by the time I got out I didn't have the craving any longer. For those of you doing this cold turkey, I applaud you, but some of us (myself included) need a crutch for a little while. I've been chewing on anything including gum, toothpicks, ink pen tops, straws, you name it. I agree with those above in that after the first 72 hours or so, it is more psychological than physical....

I have to go pick up my tax return from my accountant today...that will be a test for me when I see how much money I owe Uncle Sam.... :com: Guess I'll pop a piece of gum about 15 minutes before I get there.... ;)

I AM NOT A SMOKER. :SIB

Stay strong, team!!! :)

Keep up with the great work everyone. If I can quit smoking I KNOW you guys can.

It will get better and better everyday. Eventually you will wonder why you ever smoked.

Great job!

I got sick like 5 times in the 3 or 4 months following quitting. It was like f*** it, Im gonna just smoke cause I never got sick then. Well you did, you just didnt hardly notice because you felt like shit all the time! The smoking masked all that. The "energy" you have is mostly nervous energy that you are trying to stay occupied so you dont smoke, although you definately will have more energy. After 6 months, you just wont believe how much better you feel! Keep it up guys!

I have been trying to quit without the use of nicotine patches or guma and today (Day 3) is the most difficult so far. I think I am going to the drug store at lunch and pick up some of that gum.

I am determined to do this!

Today is already very hard and by far the hardest day even after a morning surprise before leaving home. I was thinking last night not to take the gum meanwhile its 11:20am and I've had 2 already. No thanks to the stupid people that live on our earth. I went through a 60 minute phone call with UPS to track a package and I even HAD the tracking number.. MY LORD, Save us from this idiots! I'm at 2 gums so far but feel good.

The energy I've had over the past 2 days has been just during the day. I feel wired but after dinner both nights I really mellowed out. Coughing up some stuff this morning was pretty fun.

I think I'm going to not be a hero and continue with the gum. I few more days should help. I'm not really chewing anything but have been drinking lots of tea, water and juice.

I AM NOT A SMOKER!

i think the third day is really one of the hardest, because it really sets in that you are quitting and your body really wants to go back to your old habits

but persevere - you will be so happy with yourself

i found that about a month after quitting i was digusted by the smell & taste of cigs and it made me nauseous

hopefully you will find the same will happen for you

nicotine is one of the most addictive substances in the world and ought to be as illegal as all those other drugs

and hey - if you've gotta get that itch in your lungs (cause that's what I loved), smoke some green - that REALLY helped me through

good luck everyone and don't let those cigs get you again

Hey folks...
Day 3 and allis well!
You'll survive this........and then you'll say "wasn't that bad" and "why would anyone continue to smoke"
Well, I can laugh about it now but I went cold turkey after dacades of abuse and lemmeee tell ya...I was barking at the moon for at least a week and very irritable and crotchety for another week after that....Remember.......very soon.......a week...maybe 2
you WILL be free and clear with a few urges.. but none that you can't laugh at and dismiss.....You are already a bona fide Non Smoker and the urges will become far easier ..the more time ya put under your belt. Stay busy...and get your mind on the real stuff of life!........GL today ..Stay strong!

You got the toughest times behind you and two days is MOMENTUM baby.Just make it to tonight, bedtime without smoking.Don't think thoughts like"if its so hard for me today, how am I going to quit forever?"Just make it today and day three is history.you won't need the crutches (gum patch)after a week or two, right now anything but tobacco will do.Non-smokers......you'll feel so much better each day!

Good luck guys, i have been without a smoke since january 1, coming up on 3 months.
The urges have seemed to be less frequent, the only time i get them now is driving to work in the morning while having coffee and sometimes when having a few drinks.
And i do have to tell myself that I AM NOT A SMOKER.
It works.
