Take up jogging/running while you quit..When I quit last year I found it to squash any craving..and it helps to clear out the lungs and get the oxygen in there.

Just like my buddy, on Christmas their 10 year daughter told them she got everything she wanted for Christmas except she wanted both of her parents to quit smoking. So Jan 1st they decided they were gonna do it!! My buddy quit cold turkeys from smoking 3 packs a day. Three days later his wife gave in and is still smoking 2 packs a day. HUGE WEAKNESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am still hanging strong but I am beginning to wonder how many more nights I am going to have to drink myself to sleep . . . . . .

Hell, I guess nobody ever said this was gonna be easy.

Hey I wanna add something else, since I pissed off all the people that fell off the wagon.

How many of you that smoke have watched someone die from cancer????

I am real curious about this, because I think if u did u would not hesitate to quit. Unfortunately in my life I have seen 4 people die from this, one was a very close friend, which I know I posted this story like a year ago. Everyone of them, they get about the same response from the doctor, u have about a year to live. All of them lasted about 2years w/today's medicine. But it is an awful rollercoaster to watch. First they start the treatments, drop a bunch of weight, feel like shit, get bed ridden, and usually about halfway through they perk up and feel like they are gonna beat it. And then BAMM one day they wake up and cannot get outta bed any more and just shrivel up and die. And I mean shrink down to just bones, it is a very awful thing to watch and I don't wish this kind of death on anymore. Anyways my very close friend Lee Ann died in 1999 and it almost immediately made me quit. Smoked about 15 years 2 packs a days. And lord if you have a family, do it for your kids if you can't do it for yourself. And something else you will remember the date you quit, just like your birthday or wedding day, it is that important of a day.

RIP LEE ANN 1954-1999

IMHO one day w/o smoking is better than smoking that day. If you fall off the wagon, dust your self off and get back on. During my career of smoking (15 yrs.) this is probably the 5th time I have tried to quit. My longest time was 3 mos. then got back on the cancer sticks, started out as just one and moved to many very quickly. It's a powerful drug folks and honestly I love to smoke and probably will for the rest of my life! As Mike says..."just do it".

I'm all about positive reinforcement, but unless you change this attitude, you will die much sooner than you should.

You love to smoke because you are addicted to a terrible drug. Really sit back and think. Why in the world would you love to fill your clean lungs full of toxins, smell like absolute shit all the time (believe me every smoker does), have yellow ass teeth (unless your British and it doesn't matter ;)), and leave the ones you love before you should?

There are several on here that from their communication on here, it sounds like they are truly already Non-Smokers.

For the others, let us know when you try again (hopefully soon) and we will be here for support.

dawg,
If you think you have kicked the habit after 5 days you are mistaken. It will take a lifelong commitment not to smoke anymore.

i think dawgball misunderstood this statement. in this context you meant you will "love to smoke" not necessarily "you will smoke" for the rest of your life, right?

ryson -- correct. I don't think you are ever fully over it. A relapse can happen anytime. I quit smoking back in October and haven't smoked since. But I know until I made the decision that I would never smoke again, I didn't stand a chance against it.

Very similar to anyone who is a "recovering alcoholic". It's not something you just wake up and say "Aaah! It's nice not to be an alcoholic anymore."

My apologies for taking your comments incorrectly. I did not mean my post as a personal attack. After re-reading it, I can see that I wrote it improperly.

To all you quitters!!!!

To all you quitters!!!!

To all you quitters!!!!
I smoked for 35+ years and I finally quit about 2 years ago when I retired from teaching. Best thing I ever did for myself albeit the hardest. I used nicorette gum, patches, lozenges, inhalator and Zyban all at the same. I finally stopped using the gum 2 months ago. Do whatever works. I became an expert at quitting, I did it so may times prior to stopping. There is always going to be the excuse to have "just one", the bar , the card game, the fb bet, the stress of "whatever", there will always be something, YOU ARE AN ADDICT!!! eventually you will beat it. You will gain weight but you will lose it in a year +. I do feel somewhat better from qutting but there are still times I wish I could have a smoke and I do not think that ever goes away. My 85 year old grandfather told me he still was desirous after stopping for more than 30 years. THIS IS THE HARDEST THING YOU'LL EVER DO KEEP TRYING AND DO NOT GIVE UP. The one piece of advice is that every time you want that smoke -- THINK OF SOMETHING ELSE -- ANYTHING ELSE!! THE ACTUAL URGE ONLY LASTS 30 SECONDS. IT WAS BECAUSE OF THIS THAT I WAS FINALLY ABLE TO QUIT!!!

BTW My second wife died of lung cancer and I did not stop for years afterwards. I HOPE THIS HELPS

GOOD LUCK TO ALL!!!

Jack and all others, you can do it.The worst three days are over. You are going to feel the hooks nicotine had in you loosen up each day.You are already feeling it.Keep it up,make it to bed time without smoking, looking further than that is what defeats many people. You are doing it!!!!!!!
