Been drinking this stuff the last couple of months and have become really, really attached. Its a dark Irish ale made by Guiness but does not taste like a dark beer. Actually, they sold it (shockingly enough) at Paul Brown stadium.

First time I bought it last fall I pronounced it liked it was spelled and was immediatley corrected by a bartender at Nicholsons in a plaid skirt (although he did have rather good legs). The correct pronounciation is "Smidicks". I've heard its been around Ireland and Britain for awhile but is just catching on here in the US.

Its probably been in the US for decades but just arrived in Cincinnati. Just like Mark Twain said, he wants to be in Cincinnati when the world ends cause it will happen here 5 years later. Anyway, just wanted to pass a good beer along to all my best friends here at Madjacks.

Anthony:

Unfortunately, I'm at the office and do not have one in front of me at the moment. I plan on opening a few in a couple of hours to while watching the end of the TPC. I'll check out the bottle. I highly recomment this stuff to my fellow protectors of northerly freedoms. Especially after making sure felons are permitted to roam the streets of Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal and the rest of Canada as we are so oft accused of doing.

Drink well my northern brother.

4.5% alcohol by volume. It is an excellent beer-great taste many bars out here have it on tap and I always have a few bottles in my refrig-gotten many friends hooked on it

Thanks Hawkeye.

Now instead of reading the bottle I can watch golf, basketball, and babes. Exactly what I should be doing.

I'll have to check it out, can I pick this up anywhere or do I have to go to a specialty store?

On a side note, I made my first trip up to Cincinnati Eddie. I guess the Almighty had to take a dump somewhere...I didn't realize how 'blue-collar' looking the burbs were. Kidding aside, we found a place we will be renting 1 block from Hyde Park Square, on the corner of observation and edwards. It's an old historic building that was renovated.

On your recommendation from a prior thread we ate at Teak in Mt Adams which was very good, followed that up with a beer at the Mt Adams bar and grill. It looked like Mt Adams is home to the members of your generation who didn't want to grow up.

In Hyde Park we went to The Vineyard for lunch and had some great salads, and then another place I can't recall in the circle that had great sandwhiches (had purple awnings).

If we can we will be locking up that place I mentioned. We briefly considered buying but for a short 2 year span i don't feel like the hassle.

Thanks for your previous posts.

You come in here after two months and all you got to do is promote a alcoholic beverage.

You lush.

Remember the Alamo to keep it holy.

Was just telling Ronnie and Taoist when we met Friday that this is one of my favorite beers. I knew we would find something that we agree on. The other favorite, by the way, is Sapporro.

Smithwicks is also the beer with a WIDGET in the can, isn't it? They are really proud of that!

Saint:

I haven't found it in your local 7-11's or grocery stores. In the midwest, its in beer and wine stores.

I think you and the Missus will be relatively (emphasis on the word relatively) happy in Hyde Park during your two year prison term here in the Queen City. After you move I'll give you a few more of the big Ed's tips on local points of interest. By the way, that is invaluable.

1st tip, about one mile from where you will be living, in Mt. Lookout Square, local tavern called Zips. Been there for 75 years. Best cheeseburgers around (called zipburgers). Also get the chili.

2nd tip. Fridays after work crowd. your generation. about one mile from where you live. corner of madison and edwards. Mulligans. lotta morons and hot young chicks showing stomach totally into themselves. you should fit right in.

Glad you liked Teak. Also try Boca on Madison Road.

Frank:

I like it so much, I'll even buy you one. But not Dr. Freeze.

Scott:

The way I figure, the more ya drink, the more ya drive, ya know...
the next thing, you'll need me or one of my bretheren. It's just a subtle way of marketing.

Dawg:

I've never seen it in a can. Just draught and bottles. From my perspective, this stuff would taste good if you drank it out of Wayne's spitoon.

Neverteasteit:

Dark? Bitter? Thats what I like about Smithwicks. It looks like a dark bitter ale but it doesn't taste that way. Anyway will give McEwans a try at Nicholsons (I'm sure they have it).

McEwans is a dark beer with a nice a malty sweet fruity taste. Its not very everyone especially if they like budwiper. But if you like smithwicks and guinness this beer will be right down your alley. I personally love it. But I drink guinness or blue moon all most all the time. But everyone's taste bud's are different.

And if your watering hole has several types of beers I would recommend another. Black Strap stout. Doesn't carry the punch of a stronger stout but it is good for those working their way up to a much stronger stout. Really suttle on the taste buds.

You're right, hawkeye. It's Boddington's that has the Widget in the Can printed on the side!

Thanks for the clarification.

Pronouncing the Name
When pronouncing the name, the 'W' is silent. In Ireland, it is generally pronounced as 'Smithicks', 'Smitticks', 'Smidicks' or 'Smeth-icks'. The variation of pronunciations is mostly due to differing accent and dialects of the Irish. When ordering in the US, 'Smithicks' is the preferred method, while 'Smiddicks' is the most prevalent pronunciation in Canada.

here in pennsylvania, it's smiddicks. great stuff - enjoy Jack (if you can find it).
