Country radio nixes Dixie Chicks

NASHVILLLE, Tenn., May 22 (UPI) -- It appears the war U.S. country radio stations mounted against the politically outspoken Dixie Chicks has not abated in the least.

The band is promoting "Taking the Long Way," its first album since Natalie Maines told a London audience in 2003 she was ashamed to be from the same state as U.S. President George Bush. The comment sparked a radio boycott of the group's music.

Although the album hits stores Tuesday, the first two singles from the album are not getting widespread airplay, Billboard.com reported Monday.

The first single, "Not Ready to Make Nice," only peaked at No. 36 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and the second single, "Everybody Knows," is moving downward after its peak at No. 48.

WKIS FM in Miami reported it pulled "Not Ready to Make Nice" due to listener complaints after only one week.

The program director at KUBL/KKAT in Salt Lake City told Billboard he was angered by its "self-indulgent and selfish lyrics."

Neither the Chicks or their label, Columbia Records, would speak to Billboard for its article.

Number 1 on Itunes and Amazon.com yesterday. Not surprised Corporate Radio is not playing them. But somebody must be listening.

IO the dixie chicks are 3 sluts from Texas that think people would rather hear their Bush hating rhetoric than their music.

Typical entertainers that are so full of themselves they actually think they are important. :mj12:

pretty smart marketing...they`ve basically burned their country bridges.....with all the redneck/hick remarks...

so now they`re getting back into the headlines(ala old has-been madonna by being crucified)by skewering a safe target.....

typical celebrity morons that think membership in a boy/girl band qualifies you to speak before the senate...that think that "world peace" will be accomplished by happy songs and "anti-war resolutions"......

it`s pretty shrewd,in a naive sort of way........they`ll sell some cd`s to the faithful....and zoom to the top of the celebrity wombat hierarchy...

btw,did alec baldwin ever move to sweden after gwb was elected?.....

Gw, what do you think of the Toby Keiths of the world. You know, an uninformed prick who likes The Shrub and thinks this Iraq thing is a good idea?

Not that a few here want to look deeper than bashing somebody who doesn't worship George Bush or anything...

I agree that social commentary by a group of individuals like this is probably not worth much, and people certainly have a right to bash them for it when they do it. And the marketing angle is dead on...you reap what you sow-sew-so, more or less. I personally don't look to Natalie for my political viewpoints, but to each their own. I was curious what this CD - and the song mentioned - were about. Has there been commentary from the group or publicity that this song or anything to do with the CD is anti-Bush? Or is it just an ongoing backlash against them? I don't really care, just wanted to see what the song is about. Seems to me it is about a woman scorned by a husband or something like that, from the lyrics. Might not be...I don't know. Here are the lyrics to the song, that evidently the Program Director thought were "self-indulgent and selfish."

-------------------
Forgive, sounds good
Forget, I?m not sure I could
They say time heals everything
But I?m still waiting

I?m through with doubt
There?s nothing left for me to figure out
I?ve paid a price
And I?ll keep paying

I?m not ready to make nice
I?m not ready to back down
I?m still mad as hell and
I don?t have time to go round and round and round
It?s too late to make it right
I probably wouldn?t if I could
?Cause I?m mad as hell
Can?t bring myself to do what it is you think I should

I know you said
Can?t you just get over it
It turned my whole world around
And I kind of like it

I made my bed and I sleep like a baby
With no regrets and I don?t mind sayin?
It?s a sad sad story when a mother will teach her
Daughter that she ought to hate a perfect stranger
And how in the world can the words that I said
Send somebody so over the edge
That they?d write me a letter
Sayin? that I better shut up and sing
Or my life will be over

I?m not ready to make nice
I?m not ready to back down
I?m still mad as hell and
I don?t have time to go round and round and round
It?s too late to make it right
I probably wouldn?t if I could
?Cause I?m mad as hell
Can?t bring myself to do what it is you think I should

I?m not ready to make nice
I?m not ready to back down
I?m still mad as hell and
I don?t have time to go round and round and round
It?s too late to make it right
I probably wouldn?t if I could
?Cause I?m mad as hell
Can?t bring myself to do what it is you think I should

Forgive, sounds good
Forget, I?m not sure I could
They say time heals everything
But I?m still waiting

These ladies are hardly sluts. Maines is married to Adrian Pasdar and they have two sons; McGuire is married to Gareth McGuire and they have twin daughters; Robinson is married to Charlie Robinson and they have three children - a son and boy/girl twins.

This stance has hardly hurt their popularity as the Chicks have been on Letterman, Good Morning America, Howard Stern and the cover of Time magazine, all within the last three days and their single is currently at #24 on the charts despite the lack of radio play.

I have to say that I completely agree with the following excerpt from the Time article:

The Chicks, bless 'em, don't just carry a macrochip on their shoulders. There's instrumental virtuosity and a songwriting range that spans regions and decades. One country and one form of music aren't enough to contain them or stifle their passion. They'll sing but they won't shut up. That seems downright American.

On March 10, 2003, just prior to the invasion of Iraq, Natalie Maines said between songs during a concert at the Shepherd's Bush Empire theatre in London:

"Just so you know, we're ashamed the President of the United States is from Texas."

Four days later, she issued the following apology:

"As a concerned American citizen, I apologize to President Bush because my remark was disrespectful. I feel that whoever holds that office should be treated with the utmost respect. We are currently in Europe and witnessing a huge anti-American sentiment as a result of the perceived rush to war. While war may remain a viable option, as a mother, I just want to see every possible alternative exhausted before children and American soldiers' lives are lost. I love my country. I am a proud American."

I agree wholeheartedly with President Bush?s response to Natalie Maines? initial statement:

"The Dixie Chicks are free to speak their mind. They can say what they want to say...They shouldn't have their feelings hurt just because some people don't want to buy their records when they speak out...Freedom is a two-way street, I don't really care what the Dixie Chicks said. I want to do what I think is right for the American people, and if some singers or Hollywood stars feel like speaking out, that's fine.?

The first single from their new album, entitled "Not Ready To Make Nice", debuted on March 16, 2006. It was co-written by all three members (as are all 14 album tracks), and is about the political controversy that has surrounded the group. The lyrics include: "I?m not ready to make nice/I?m not ready to back down/I?m still mad as hell and I don?t have time to go round and round and round/It?s too late to make it right/I probably wouldn?t if I could/?Cause I?m mad as hell/Can?t bring myself to do what it is you think I should" and, in criticism of the death threats the women (particularly Maines) received, "It?s a sad sad story when a mother will teach her daughter that she ought to hate a perfect stranger/And how in the world can the words that I said/Send somebody so over the edge that they?d write me a letter sayin? that I better shut up and sing or my life will be over."

In the current issue of Time Magazine, Maguire told Time, "I'd rather have a smaller following of really cool people who get it, who will grow with us as we grow and are fans for life, than people that have us in their five-disc changer with Reba McEntire and Toby Keith. We don't want those kinds of fans. They limit what you can do."

The Chicks are far from alone in their opinion about how our President has conducted this war.

Free country say what ever you like. Seems they take that to heart. Why not the lovers of Bush say all things are great when there not.

Al Franken plays to the troops too.
Just because someone is against the Iraq Operation does not make them anti-American but people like Toby Keith who openly try to stop people from working who speak out against the war is anti-American and there for yes, he is the prick.
By the way, all these right wing radio nutj obs and Fox News personalities, what makes them anymore qualified to speak their mind than any other entertainer?

i'm sure the dixie chicks will sell lots of stuff (c.d.'s, concerts). i'm sure they will be on lots of shows. but they could have done better if they kept their mouth's shut this time. they lost a part of their fan base and might have been able to get some back. just because they are being interviewed doesnt mean everything. i'm betting yanni gets interviewed also.

Tell me how, an ANY WAY, did the Dixie Chicks "disparage the country"?

You've said worse about "Chimpy" in this forum than they've said about Bush. Does that mean you have disparaged the country?

All they ever did was say they were ashamed that Bush was from their home state. That was enough to make them parriahs in the single-minded, incestuous, anti-independent thought world of today's country music.

I never called Toby Keith a prick. I think he's funny, and I appreciate his views. Just like I appreciate the views of the Chicks - even the pudgy one ....especially the pudgy one.

I'm confused by your position on this weasel. You insult Bush all the time, but are clearly a patritic person. The Dixie Chicks stated their view (much more mildly than you in fact) against Dubya and you think they were out of line? This just doesn't make sense.

Dixie Chicks payed a price for what they said at a time when that sentiment wasn't popular. Their core market dropped them - and they had every right to drop them. Customer is always right and we have a free market. So now the Chicks have rebounded by gaining popularity outside of country music - where they have some respect for speaking their mind. What's wrong with this?

Free speech at all times. Anything less is un-American. Don't understand what problem any real American should have with this concept.

And this somehow makes him immune to criticism? If that is the case I suppose we should all cower in our closets and hope for the best from our elected officials since you obviously believe they can do no wrong.

The point is that one of the principles that this country was founded on is free speech. Bush himself reinforced Maines' right to express her opinion but some would have us believe that out of respect for the office, this is inappropriate. I think that I will side with the Founding Fathers on this one.

President Bush said:

Actually, Bush was elected by a majority of the electoral college in 2000,but he lost the popular vote. So, technically, Gore was preferred by a majority of Americans.

Bush did slightly better against Kerry, actually winning the popular vote by less than 2% of the vote. You remember, the "vote for Republicans or you will surely die" election?

Not to quibble of kittles and bits with you, gw...but...gotta keep it real, ya know?
