Just saw the match between the U.S. and Italy. Not bad... Except the game ended up in a tie. TIE? What the f_ck is that? Had 10 bucks on the U.S.A. to win 75. Shouldn't I get my money back because the game ended in a tie? NO! It's f_cking soccer!

I'll admit to watching several game in an effort to understand the most popular game in the world.

I stick to my original thought, this game sucks and is boring as paste, **** it.

I guess you have to have a history of soccer in your family and/or have played hte sport when younger...true most of the game is just running back and forth, but the importance and excitement of a goal and watching what some of these guys can do on the field (like Ronaldinho's trickery) make it worth the whole iMO...like I said, its an "acquired taste"...if you ever played the game you would know the difficulty of goal scoring and winning a game where you can put all the effort in the world in and still tie, or win 1-0...everybody has their preference

Used to agree with you guys...

But I am studying abroad in Costa Rica this summer... and the excitement here for the World Cup made me decide to give it a chance... and I have to say I have enjoyed watching some of the games. It certainly isn?t as fun to watch as a football game in the states, but it serves it purpose... Still probably would never buy a ticket to watch a soccer game in the states... but if I had the opportunity to watch a game in Europe, I would jump at it.

I agree Vyrus. I've never played Soccer so I have no interest in the sport. I've heard people say the same about baseball. I played baseball all my life until college so I could sit and watch the Royals and anyone play a game.

Kansas City area for who knows how long....
Adam Gopnik's high-toned analysis:

Adam Gopnik's high-toned analysis:

He wrote a celebrated essay on soccer a few years ago. Here's some excerpts from a review of his book "Paris to the Moon":

Gopnik set himself the task of watching a month's worth of soccer games, in an effort to ascertain why it is that the rest of the world loves a sport that many Americans will only watch at gunpoint.

At first he is a reluctant spectator. "Things start off briskly," Gopnik observes of the
tournaments, "and then fritter away into desultory shin kicking, like a Wall Street Journal editorial"

Near the end of his self-imposed viewing marathon, however, Gopnik has a Road-to-Damascus revelation--soccer isn't meant to be a spectacle, or a temporary escape from life. Rather it is life, with all of its injustice and tedium. "We seek unfair advantage, celebrate tiny moments of pleasure as though they were final victories, score goals for the wrong side."

"The World Cup is a festival of fate ? man accepting his hard circumstances, the near-certainty of his failure. There is, after all, something familiar about a contest in which nobody wins and nobody pots a goal," he wrote. "Nil-nil is the score of life. This may be where the difficulty lies for Americans, who still look for Eden out there on the ballfield."

On the course!
I was a bit like that fuk in the beer commercials:

"I will now attempt to watch two minutes of soccer.........."

Then, I fall on the floor, completely exhausted after the two minutes are up.

Would rather watch a 6th grade girls basketball game where there a 100 jump balls during the game. You know back when girls game always had a lot of jump balls before the new rules were put into place to not have jump balls.

I definitely understand both sides of this debate,I'm not a big soccer fan,It is corny how these guys take dives,As in any sport players will look for an edge,An today's game it was fouls an a bogus ref who was banned from world cup play last time round due to suspect calls,I really enjoy sitting back an rooting for the U.S.A. In all sports,I guess its just a pride thing and a +650 value bet  I'm glad I caught the game it was a feel good couple hours and to see us walk off with their heads high after being railroaded by 2 red cards down 10/9 in players we should be proud,Good job U.S.A.,Sheesh!!! I miss Mia and the women's team,Now that was some good chit!!!Our women excell,WHY?,Because they can,Best scholastic programs in the world. Go.....US
